Their 15th victory in 22 matches stretched Downs’ lead to 18 points over second-placed Royal AM. Downs will now shift their focus to another away league match against Maritzburg United in Pietermaritzburg on Saturday before starting their preparation to host Ahly on March 11 in the second of the Champions League’s Group A blockbuster clashes. For Galaxy, the loss further deepens their relegation woes as they remain just three points away from bottom club Baroka FC. Galaxy, who meet Baroka at the weekend, had come into this match on the back of a decent run since the start of 2022.

Super Sundowns stroll past ten-man Galaxy (Citizen)

Mamelodi Sundowns romped to a 3-0 win over TS Galaxy on Wednesday to move 18 points clear at the top of the DStv Premiership.

Peter Shalulile – after a relatively quiet game – got the cherry on top for the Brazilians. It was the Namibian striker’s 14th league goal of the season, breaking his six-game goal drought. Just after the hour mark, Domingo struck a gorgeous shot from range to make it 2-0. Galaxy goalkeeper Wensten Van der Linde was left shell-shocked as the ball rattled the back of the net, with what is surely a contender for Goal of the Season.

Champions Mamelodi Sundowns edged closer to another league title after beating 10-man TS Galaxy in Mbombela on Wednesday night.

But he was lucky in the end as the shot sailed for a corner-kick. Haashim Domingo was unfortunate not to put his name on the scoresheet by the half-an-hour mark. Mudau didn’t need a second invite as he unleashed a thunderbolt that flew right into the top corner. The latter thought of taking a shot but he set-up a well-positioned Mudau instead. The Namibian scored the third goal with a tap-in from close-range. The victory was sweeter that it came against their ex-coach Pitso Mosimane who is yet to win in the group stage so far.

Next, Mudau's precise delivery found Shalulile at the near post, who side-footed first-time over the bar. Domingo got the goal he deserved just after the hour mark when he found a pocket of space between the lines on the edge of the box and opened his body up before curling a sublime effort into the top right-hand corner. Shalulile broke his four-match goal drought by adding the third in the 79th minute when substitute Divine Lunga delivered from the left for the Namibian to side into the back of the net from close range to add some gloss to the final scoreline. Seven minutes after the break, Haashim Domingo did well to work himself a yard of space in a congested Galaxy box as his snapshot narrowly wide. Mokoena did excellently to skip past his marker on the left and got to the byline before cutting back for Domingo, whose goalbound effort on the slide was fortuitously deflected over the bar by Galaxy. The chances were coming thick and fast as the game began to open up. The Brazilians took the lead in the 19th minute when Shalulile's pass founf Khuliso Mudau and the right-back sent a rocket from outside the box into the top right-hand corner. Sundowns were on top in the early exchanges and enjoying the vast majority of the possession as expected. Galaxy faced an even more uphill battle when they were reduced to ten men in the 21st minute after Lindokuhle Mbatha picked up his second yellow card of the contest. In the 35th minute, Lesedi Kapinga lined up an attempt from range that was blocked bravely as Galaxy held on until halftime.
