But Dlamini died suddenly less than a month after her husband, stating in her will that their son Misuyzlu, 47, should ascend the throne. Some Zulu subjects believe that royal matters do not belong in a South African court. In his will, he stated that his favourite wife, Shiyiwe Mantfombi Dlamini, his third, to be regent of the kingdom.
The coronation of Prince Misuzulu kaZwelithini as the king of the Zulu nation can go ahead, the Pietermaritzburg high court ruled on Wednesday.
Madondo said that application had become “moot”, but he dealt at length with allegations that there was division in the Zulu royal family over who should take the throne. This was because the king, in his will, had named Queen Mantfombi Dlamini Zulu, who is considered in Zulu custom to be the “great wife” because she hailed from eSwatini royalty, as his heir. She named her eldest son Prince Misuzulu, as her successor “which was in accordance with traditional law and custom” and her will had not been challenged. “There was no dispute ... no grievances were lodged and no-one else is laying claim to the throne,” the judge said. In January Madondo heard argument in three related applications. He also dismissed an application by the brother of the king, Prince Mbonisi Zulu, who launched an urgent application in December last year asking for an interdict against a “rumoured” coronation of Prince Misuzulu which was allegedly going to take place the following day.
The stage is now set for Prince Misuzulu KaZwelithini to be crowned as the next king of amaZulu.
The judge further said Prince Mboniso was not part of the amaZulu royal family meeting, chaired Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi as the prime minister of the amaZulu nation, where Prince Misizulu’s name was proposed and nominated as the next amaZulu king. In his application, Prince Mboniso had sought to halt the coronation of Prince Misuzulu, stating the Zulu royal meeting in which his name was proposed and nominated. He added that the nation will be safe in his brother’s hands. Ruling on the applications of the two princesses, Deputy Judge Madondo said two fingerprint experts who had been called to examine the signature of the late king, had concluded conflicting findings on the matter. The princesses sought the court to halt the coronation of Prince Misuzulu as the next king of the amaZulu, stating that the will of the late king had been forged. She also sought to be awarded half of the late king’s estate, believed to be worth more than R200-million.
