Calls for peace and inclusion dominated the Winter Paralympics opening ceremony (unknown)

A platform emerged from the stadium floor, bringing Duan alone to the center of the snowflake. The opening ceremony included a video montage of people touching their torches together to light them, against a variety of backdrops and landscapes. The Paralympic torch looks like a silver and gold scroll and bears similarities to its Olympic counterpart, as organizers explain. The torchbearer was Li Duan, a visually impaired long jumper who won medals in Athens in 2004 and Beijing in 2008 before his retirement. A young girl picked up a lantern, placing it on the high-definition LED floor to create color and movement across the stadium. Thirteen interpreters (symbolizing the 13th Winter Paralympics) stood around them on rotating LED snowflakes, raising their arms and fingers to the beat of the music. He did not mention Russia by name, but called for the Olympic Truce for peace – a United Nations resolution adopted by consensus in December – to be respected and observed. "Here in Beijing, Paralympic athletes from 46 different nations will compete with each other, not against each other," he said at one point. Carter is a three-time Paralympian who made his debut at the Sochi Games in 2014. Team USA is made up of 67 athletes, including two guides for visually impaired athletes, with a mix of veterans and newcomers. The team includes two six-time Paralympians, Nordic skiers Oksana Masters and Aaron Pike, and one five-time Paralympian, Laurie Stephens in alpine skiing. And one is here in Beijing."

Winter Paralympics 2022: GB win first medal as Ukraine soar on day ... (The Guardian)

GB opened their campaign at the Winter Paralympics with a bronze for Millie Knight and her guide Brett Wild in the very first medal event.

There was a surprise in the women’s standing event as the eight-time Paralympic champion and favourite, Marie Bochet of France, crashed out while attempting to defend her title. “That was probably the run of my life.” There was also a Ukrainian element to the victory of Oksana Masters in the women’s biathlon sitting sprint. Masters was born in Ukraine and settled in the US, the nation she competes for, after she was adopted. The most emotional scenes of the day were at the Zhangjiakou National Biathlon Centre, where Grygorii Vovchynskyi took Ukraine’s first gold of the Games. “I was thinking before the race, I must try to do everything for Ukraine,” he said. The hosts made a strong start with eight medals in total, including Liu Zixu and Guo Yujie securing golds in biathlon events.

Skiing sensation Corey Peters wins second medal at Beijing ... (1 News)

Corey Peters has won his second Paralympic medal in as many days, claiming silver in the super-G sitting at the Beijing Winter Paralympics.

That had extended to five seconds midway through the race and 6.69 seconds at the end.

Hall skied as clean as anyone in what were difficult conditions on the Yanqing course that saw several athletes fall.

The 34-year-old said the snow was soft due to warm weather, thus difficult to turn sharply at speed.

While temperatures and conditions were set to remain the same over the coming days, Hall said it was similar to spring conditions the team had trained on back home in New Zealand.

"We're ready for anything," he said.

Hall won't have much down time, with the super combined event moved forward to Monday. The super combined involves two runs - one in super-G and one in slalom.

Corey Peters has won his second Paralympic medal in as many days, claiming silver in the super-G sitting at the Beijing Winter Paralympics.

Peters picked up right where he left off, skiing superbly once again in tricky conditions at the Yanqing National Alpine Ski Centre.

The 38-year-old was rapid throughout the middle of the course, picking up speed with some tight turns and was just milliseconds away from crossing the line in the gold medal position.

However, he wasn't quite able to overcome Jesper Pedersen, finishing 0.47 seconds behind the Norwegian.

While it wasn't gold, Peters said he was "absolutely ecstatic" with the result.

"It was a close race, less than half a second between us, but I'm just stoked to come away with a second medal," Peters said.

"I think I've exceeded my own expectations. I wouldn't be happy just with the one gold to be fair, but now the silver, and who knows in the giant slalom, maybe we'll get the bronze and get the full set," Peters laughed.

He now has a couple of days to rest before his final event in the giant slalom.

Fellow Kiwi sit-skier Aaron Ewen also skied well, finishing in ninth place, 6.35 seconds off the pace.

"It went a bit better than yesterday for sure, there's still a few mistakes I need to work on, but way happier today for sure." Hall won bronze in the event four years ago at PyeongChang.

"I'm really excited to do that and get a really good super-G tomorrow and go out there and just smash the slalom as hard as I possibly can and see where we end up," Hall said.

Earlier, Adam Hall finished 21st in the standing super-G.

Hall started well and was less than a second off the pace at the first split.

"I'm a fan of the slushy snow so I liked it better until I got to the canyon and it was a bit icy and it wasn't as good.

"I'm pumped for Corey again.

Kiwi Corey Peters claims silver at 2022 Winter Paralympics in Beijing (Stuff.co.nz)

After winning gold on Saturday, Kiwi skier was back on the podium barely 24 hours later.

3:50pm: The women's Super G standing (currently in action) and sitting events have to be completed before the three Kiwi men are involved in their events. 4:49: Competition has started in the men’s Super G standing, and Kiwi Adam Hall will have to wait a bit until he gets his chance. 4:47pm: Okay, we are inching closer to seeing the New Zealanders in action. 5:05pm: We are going to have a bit of a delay while we wait for Hogan of the USA be attended to. 6:07pm: The last skier in the Super G standing is completing his run. 5:12pm: A near-crash from China’s Sun. He completed the course but is now no chance of a medal. 5:15pm: Gmuer of Switzerland, the defending Super G champion, has just put in a decent shift – but there will be no medal for him. 6:57pm: Another competitor crashes, and more anxiety for New Zealanders. It takes a few minutes to ensure the skier is okay, and to get him down the bottom of the course. 6.42pm: Peters hasn’t done enough to win gold – Norway’s Pedersen time of 1.09.69 wasn’t overhauled – but he certainly appears to be in the medal hunt at this point. 7.08pm: Rowland of Canada is the penultimate skier for the day in the Super G sitting. Hopefully the skier is okay ... the TV commentators seem to think the medical staff think he will be okay. He appears to making good time but his split times don't appear to be a threat to the New Zealander Peters, who is still on target to win silver.

"The last week, we spent in Italy, without any equipment. We are really close to each other," Lukianenko said after his win. "I want to dedicate this medal to the guys who protect our cities," he said. The team claimed three golds, three silver and a bronze in the biathlon events, just days after an arrival in the capital their top official had dubbed a "miracle" following an arduous journey.
