Athletic Bilbao are one of three current La Liga clubs located in the Basque country, a region which spans across a section of northern Spain and into the south of France. In addition to the anti- Ukraine messaging, the flag of Novorossiya, 'New Russia', was also displayed by fans of the La Liga side, in reference to the eastern region of Ukraine. One banner read: "Stop witch hunts", whilst another stated: "The war has been going for eight years", a reference to the start of the war in the Donbas region.
