When Will Men Get Birth Control Pills? Your Questions, Answered (The New York Times)

A new study found that a birth control pill was 99 percent effective in preventing pregnancy in mice. But don't expect a human version to hit the shelves ...

But she estimates that it would take 10 years, at least, for the male pill to get on the market. But until these endeavors go through substantial studies — and, critically, trials in humans — a male form of birth control comparable to the pills, patches, shots and rings on the market for women remains a fantasy. In the 1990s, the World Health Organization conducted research into testosterone as a potential form of contraception and found it was highly effective at decreasing sperm counts. Birth control pills for women have also been linked to blood clots. Researchers at the University of Minnesota created a birth control pill for male mice, which proved 99 percent effective in preventing pregnancy. Those match the well-documented side effects women report from hormonal birth control pills. Gunda Georg, a professor of medical chemistry at the University of Minnesota who led the research, pointed out the differences between this study and past attempts to design a male birth control pill: There were no apparent side effects in the mice, even when the researchers tested high doses, she said. Condoms have the additional benefit of protecting people from sexually transmitted infections, but they are “relatively unpopular,” Dr. Najari said. The National Institutes of Health is funding a clinical trial to test a contraceptive gel formulation called NES/T, which men would apply to their shoulders and upper arms once per day. The company bills it as “ the IUD, for men.” Researchers gave this compound, referred to as YCT529, to male mice for four weeks; the animals showed drastically lower sperm counts. But don’t expect a human version to hit the shelves any time soon.

But men's birth control options — and, therefore, responsibilities — could soon be expanding. Today, scientists report a non-hormonal male contraceptive that ...

Also, the structural differences between RARa bound to the agonist and the antagonist facilitated the design of full antagonists. To develop their non-hormonal male contraceptive, the researchers targeted a protein called the retinoic acid receptor alpha (RAR-a). This protein is one of a family of three nuclear receptors that bind retinoic acid, a form of vitamin A that plays important roles in cell growth, differentiation (including sperm formation) and embryonic development. Our effort focused on developing a non-hormonal male contraceptive to avoid the hormonal side effects. They hope that their efforts will finally bring the elusive oral male contraceptive to fruition. bound to retinoic acid, identifying structural differences in the ways the three receptors bind to their common ligand. “We wanted to develop a non-hormonal male contraceptive to avoid these side effects,” says Noman, a graduate student in the lab of Gunda Georg, Ph.D., at the University of Minnesota.

"Male contraceptives will add to the method mix, providing new options that allow men and women to contribute in whatever way they deem appropriate to contraceptive use," argues the nonprofit Male Contraceptive Initiative, which engages in fundraising and advocacy. But surveys have shown that most women would in fact have faith in their partners, and significant numbers of men have indicated they would be open to the medication. The team, which received funding from the National Institutes of Health and the Male Contraceptive Initiative, is working with a company called YourChoice Therapeutics to start human trials by the third or fourth quarter of 2022, said Georg. A team of scientists said Wednesday they had developed a male oral contraceptive that was 99 percent effective in mice and didn't cause observable side effects, with the drug expected to enter human trials by the end of this year. For their work, Noman and Georg developed a compound that blocks the action of RAR-alpha. They identified the best molecular structure with the help of a computer model. The female pill uses hormones to disrupt the menstrual cycle, and historic efforts to develop a male equivalent targeted the male sex hormone testosterone.

Male Contraceptive Pills Prove To Be 99% Effective In Preventing ... (The Logical Indian)

A team of scientists came up with the world's first male contraception pill that will undergo human trials this year. Recently, the medication was tested on ...

Not only that, but the current team is also looking at other compounds to strengthen their research. The male mice were orally given a compound called 'YCT529' that does the needful. The world's first birth control pill for men was tested on mice recently, proving that it is 99% effective in preventing pregnancy.
