You might not remember, but in 2011, there was a hotel room, and it was called the bunker, and they created maps that no one got to see, and they gave us a decade of rigged, partisan representation here in the statehouse and Congress.” “The question is, are the independent mapmakers, the commission mapmakers, I should say, are they going to produce something? "That’s extremely frustrating, and you know, it’s very insulting — not only to the process but to voters and to the court.” “I think it’s fascinating that they’re worried about the timeline, the deadline for the court, but not the substance of the orders that have been ordered over and over again to make sure maps are not rigged for parties or candidates," said Jen Miller of the League of Women Voters. "We had this transparent process. "To be consistent, I think the vote was a no this time, too. The Ohio Supreme Court rejected that set in late February, calling them unconstitutional because it unfairly favored Republicans and wasn't representative of voters.

It could reject the maps passed last night or even retained the right to hold commission members in contempt of court. Republicans on the commission had questioned the process being used by the independent mapmakers during their four days of drawing maps for Ohio's House and Senate districts. And minutes later, some of them were asked to leave by the Ohio State Highway Patrol officers who guard the Statehouse. By the time the commission voted on the maps late Monday night, some of the people who had been watching the process play out in real life gathered in the hearing room. Two new maps have been adopted by the Ohio Redistricting Commission. And they aren’t the ones independent mapmakers have been drawing for days. The court order does not provide for a continuance of that time.

Battlefield 2042's Maps, Ranked (Kotaku)

Some are as bad as the game's launch reception, while others are unsung heroes.

But first impressions can be deceiving, because this map’s various levels of elevation, and the endless struggles to control the central hill looking down on the rest of the map, mean this is actually one of the most interesting—and varied—maps available, in terms of the kinds of experiences it offers to all classes and vehicle types. It’s a big map but never feels like a chore to get around, and has big open spaces for vehicle duels but also plenty of cover and terrain variety for infantry. Instead, it’s the smaller vantage points on the edge of the map, like a temporary settlement paired with a comms tower, that lead to the most enjoyable showdowns. I’m also a big fan of the absurdity of its mountaintop station, which can only be reached by aircraft or a single zipline. The various, enormous rusting ship hulks should be the highlight here, but the wide open spaces around them and repetitive architecture makes them a bit of a drag. It’s in the same way I think a lot of series veterans are still struggling to come to terms with so much else about Battlefield 2042.

G.O.P. Presses for Greater Edge on Florida and Ohio Congressional ... (The New York Times)

In Florida, Gov. Ron DeSantis vetoed a map drawn by his fellow Republicans in the Legislature. In Ohio, Republicans closed in on a G.O.P.-friendly map for ...

The Ohio Supreme Court has also rejected three successive Republican-drawn maps of districts for the State House and Senate as gerrymanders, once threatening to hold the Redistricting Commission in contempt for slow-walking the mapmaking process. It’s the redrawing of the boundaries of congressional and state legislative districts. Mr. DeSantis acknowledged that the map lawmakers end up drawing in the special session would still be likely to face a court challenge. Florida has a relatively late primary election, set for Aug. 23, and voting is unlikely to be threatened by the uncertainty over the maps. In Florida, Gov. Ron DeSantis on Tuesday vetoed congressional maps drawn by the Republican-controlled Legislature and called for a special session to draw new maps in mid-April, a rare fracture between the Republican governor and state lawmakers. “But I don’t think they will have the last say.” On Tuesday, the governor appeared to take aim at those provisions, calling them far-reaching and inconsistent. The result is an emerging new congressional landscape that will not tilt as heavily toward Republicans as it did after the last redistricting cycle, in 2011. Mr. Trump carried Florida in 2020 with 51.2 percent of the vote. Legislative leaders in Florida told lawmakers to plan to be in Tallahassee for the special session April 19-22. Mr. DeSantis had proposed maps earlier this year that further eroded minority representation, including in Mr. Lawson’s district. The Republican pressure comes as Democrats have fared better than expected in this year’s redistricting cycle.
