The team behind Chastain’s transformation into a televangelist with tarantula eyelashes in “The Eyes of Tammy Faye” won the Oscar for makeup and hairstyling. Hans Zimmer, who wrote the “Dune” score, was not on hand to accept the Oscar, the second of his career after “The Lion King” (1995), with a presenter explaining that he was away on tour. Another set of streaming data from the third-party monitor Samba TV reported that less than 4 million people had watched “The Power of the Dog” since it arrived on Netflix in December. “Gay! Gay!” the trio chanted. (Kathryn Bigelow won in 2010 for “The Hurt Locker,” and Chloé Zhao, was named best director for “Nomadland” last year.) Campion was the first woman to be nominated in the category more than once, having been given a nod in 1994 for “The Piano.” She performed her nominated “King Richard” song, “Be Alive.” Then came a trio of hosts — Amy Schumer, Wanda Sykes and Regina Hall — and a joint monologue that hit on Timothée Chalamet’s sex appeal and the culture wars. It left with one win, for Jane Campion’s direction of “The Power of the Dog.” Campion became only the third woman to win in the directing category. The best actress Oscar was awarded to Jessica Chastain for “The Eyes of Tammy Faye.” It was her first Oscar, having previously been nominated in 2013 for “Zero Dark Thirty” and in 2012 for “The Help.” During her speech, Chastain spoke about suicide, “bigoted legislation” being enacted across the country and hate crimes around the world. In an important step for representation in Hollywood, Troy Kotsur became the first deaf man in academy history to win an Oscar for acting. She was only the second Latina to receive an acting Oscar. The first was Rita Moreno, who won in 1962 for the same role in the original film. Rock recovered enough to present the best documentary award to “ Summer of Soul.” But even an emotional acceptance speech by the film’s director, Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson, could not hide the fact that many in attendance were rattled. But not to Rock. “I hope the academy invites me back,” Smith said.

“In a way, I feel bad for Will Smith too, because I think he let his emotions get the better of him, and this should have been one of the great nights of his life,” Mr. Kimmel said. Others seemed to defend Mr. Smith. “Many takes on here about Will Smith and Chris Rock, especially from people whose partners are not Black women (mainly white people),” the author Frederick Joseph tweeted. Mr. Smith was not deterred from celebrating his win on Sunday night, dancing at a crowded party after the Oscars while holding his trophy, but he avoided questions about the incident. What I’m hearing from everybody is that this was not the material that was rehearsed.” “I was out of line and I was wrong,” said Smith, who hit Rock at the Oscars after the comedian made a joke about his wife. The incident unfolded Sunday night after Mr. Rock made a joke about the buzzed hair of Mr. Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, who has alopecia, a condition that leads to hair loss. “I am a work in progress.” “Let me tell you something, it’s a very bad practice to walk up onstage and physically assault a comedian,” Kathy Griffin tweeted. “I am embarrassed and my actions were not indicative of the man I want to be.” “We have officially started a formal review around the incident and will explore further action and consequences in accordance with our bylaws, standards of conduct and California law.” The Academy was not known to have expelled a member before 2017, when Harvey Weinstein was removed amid allegations of sexual harassment and rape. The academy’s statement came after a meeting Monday. A five-page document on standards of conduct that accompanied it spells out behavior the organization deems unacceptable.
