Fans remember their moments with the Australian cricket legend ... (ABC News)

Australian icon and cricketing legend Shane Warne had a magical way of making those around him feel seen and loved. Here's what you had to share.

At the end of the match — WA batted in the second innings — we pleaded with him to get us a ball from the match, and he actually tried to convince the umpire for it. Off the field, he was not perfect, but who of us are? And that's what I loved about him, he was Shane Warne, take him or leave him. The Aussie looked at Shane and Liz and said loudly, 'Bugger me. Even after receiving insults and sledges the whole game, he still tried to do something nice. Not so Shane, he was as friendly as any bloke I've ever met, and I will always have a good word for him and fondly remember that time." He sat down next to me and said hello and politely greeted all of us. I asked him a lot of questions on cricket … [and] asked if he would mind showing me how he grips the ball. I asked him for an autograph in the back of Waugh's book. I left the store and promptly bumped into Warnie a few minutes later. It was the first moment I thought, 'Wow, this bloke is good.' His figures of 7-52 won Australia the game. Such fond memories of a night where he and Ian Healy had turned their team jackets inside out as they wanted to go 'incognito', which of course was impossible.

"He's left us with a flood of memories and such great times." People like to see something a bit different, and they got that with Warnie," Taylor told reporters. It was beamed live to cricket grounds across Australia and watched around the world. "It's a sad day today but it's not in some ways because his legacy lives on and he will live on through future generations because he was mesmerising, brilliant and loved to play cricket and loved life," said John before singing 'Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me'. The larger-than-life "king of spin" was honoured at a two-hour service at the Melbourne Cricket Ground with more than 50 000 free tickets handed out. Shane Warne was remembered as "mesmerising" and a "genius" at a state memorial service in Melbourne on Wednesday attended by tens of thousands of spectators and legendary players, with music superstars Elton John and Chris Martin performing by video link.

On a memorable night, it was perhaps the least surprising anecdote of all. But it was the contributions of those who knew him best that lingered longest. There was even a bit of Bradman, whose grand-daughter Greta, an operatic soprano, got things going with the national anthem. For the cricket community, Warne’s status was assured long ago. The question was how to do him justice. In 1915, around 250,000 turned out in Sydney to bid farewell to Victor Trumper, the Golden Age batting great who had died at 37 from Bright’s disease.

Life is a flatter pitch without spin king Shane Warne (Evening Standard)

Shane Warne wanted to make every single ball an event. He would stand at the top of his mark, letting the clock tick and the batsman sweat.

Indeed, one reason he gave for his retirement while still at the top of the game was to spend more time with his family. The music at the MCG was less “I vow to thee, my country” and more Eighties classics, but then again, the G is to Australian Cricket what Westminster Abbey is to the Anglican Church. He would stand at the top of his mark, letting the clock tick and the batsman sweat.

We usually sat in the cheap seats, either on the scoreboard side or the wooden structure that stood where the Memorial Stand now is. I was with family and friends from the East Rand, making one of our regular treks to that grand old stadium to watch Test cricket. That was where we sat on the Saturday of the first Test between SA and Australia. That was where we saw Warne and his Australians have the swagger knocked out of them by a strong SA team and the wind put up them by close on 30,000 fans spoiling for a fight...
