Traditionally the beginning and end of fasting is marked by two of the five daily prayers - Fajr at dawk and Maghrib at dusk. Then, later on in the evening, Maghrib will begin at 7.48pm, marking the ending of the fasting period for the first day. According to Didsbury Mosque in Manchester, Fajr begins at 5.10am on Saturday which will mark the beginning of the fasting period. Fasting during Ramadan is considered one of the five pillars of Islam - a set of core beliefs and practices in Islam that are considered essential for any practising Muslim. Fasting during Ramadan is also considered obligatory for all healthy Muslim men, women and children who have reached puberty. In Islam, fasting during Ramadan is considered an act of worship in itself and holds great spiritual significance. During this time, Muslims observe a period of fasting and refrain from eating and drinking from sunrise to sunset.

Both “Mubarak” and “Kareem” are also given names in Arabic, which carry the same meanings as bestowed in the Ramadan greetings. What is Ramadan? Ramadan is the ...

Khaled Boudemagh, described by Gulf News as a Dubai-based language expert, said: “Ramadan is a month of generosity, therefore wish Kareem.” Fasting at Ramadan is one of the five pillars of Islam – the fundamental rules that all Muslims follow – along with the Shahadah (declaration of faith), Salat (prayer), Zakat (charity) and the Hajj pilgrimage. Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, and marks the time when the Quran is said to have been revealed to Prophet Muhammad by God with a month-long fast. “Ramadan Kareem” is less commonly used, but translates as “Generous Ramadan”. The more common of the greetings during the holy month is “Ramadan Mubarak”, which translates from the Arabic word meaning “blessed”. This phrase therefore means “Blessed Ramadan”, often used in the same way as wishing somebody a “Happy Ramadan”.
