It was far from ideal conditions in the Cape as a powerful south-easterly wind blew through the stadium but, to their credit, the Stormers handled it magnificently well. With the win, John Dobson’s side reclaim sixth place from the Vodacom Bulls, who beat Irish side Ulster at Loftus Versfeld earlier in day. The Stormers scored three tries in the first half and one in the second for a 29-13 bonus-point victory over an Ospreys team that welcomed back experienced Wales internationals Gareth Anscombe and Adam Beard.

The home side outplayed the top-ranked Welsh side after also bagging three consecutive wins against European opposition in Ulster, Zebre Parma, and Cardiff Blues.

Ospreys blown away by Stormers despite the return of 8 Test players (RugbyPass)

The Stormers completed a clean sweep of victories for South African teams in the URC this weekend by dispatching the Ospreys in Cape Town.

Libbok slipped between two forwards to renew the hosts’ onslaught and once flanker Hacjivah Dayimani had sucked in two defenders, Leolin Zas used his strength to complete a tricky finish. Manie Libbok was expertly directing operations at fly-half and only two penalties from his opposite number Gareth Anscombe were keeping the Ospreys in temporary touch. Barely a shot was fired by the Welsh region, who are still searching for a first away win since October, and the writing was on the wall when they fell 14-3 behind inside the opening 10 minutes.

The Ospreys were contributing to their own downfall by turning the ball over too easily and their opponents needed no second invitation to attack with Libbok and Zas rampant. From the moment scrum-half Paul De Wet finished a dazzling move in the sixth minute, it was clear the South African Shield leaders were operating at a different level as they climbed back to sixth in the overall table. Eight players returned from Guinness Six Nations duty with Wales to bolster the visitors yet they still collapsed to a four-try rout that comes a week after they were crushed 45-15 by the Lions.

URC result: Stormers too slick for visiting Ospreys (The South African)

The Stormers have beaten the Ospreys in their United Rugby Championship (URC) match at the Cape Town Stadium.

The home side got more rewards from this though as Libbok kicked a 39th minute penalty goal from 30 metres out after the Welsh side tried to slow down the ball. Three minutes later a delightful passage of play and offloads by the Capetonians saw Adre Smith (lock) score next to the upright. Scrumhalf Paul de Wet scored after Manie Libbok (flyhalf) slipped past a couple of defenders and found his halfback partner on his inside.
