It was either going to be a cluster of massive proportions that embarrassed everyone involved or it was going to be a total blast; a spectacle from a consummate showman in Knoxville and one of WWE's most underrated performers in Zayn.It was the latter and both performers deserve props for crafting a match that kept the fans invested and entertained throughout. Kingston and Woods' tribute to Big E by wearing gear inspired by his WWE Championship win was very cool.Sheamus carrying Butch away from the action, preventing his involvement and a disqualification, helped put over the tenacity of the newcomer.Pat McAfee showed up and showed out Sunday night, as expected, and defeated Austin Theory in a match the Dallas fans were red-hot for.Raw athleticism from McAfee, and solid heel work from Theory, combined to make for a fun match that likely exceeded expectations. Sheamus and Ridge HollandThe match between New Day and the team of Sheamus and Ridge Holland was deemed expendable on Saturday so it was never really expected to be a memorable match. And it was not.The sprint of a match was more spots than anything, culminating with Holland pinning Xavier Woods following Northern Grit.ย Why WWE continuously feels the need to put Sheamus and Holland over is a question only it can answer but, with the tribute to Big E via his fear, this felt like the opportune time to give Kingston and Woods the nod. Stone Cold" Steve Austin made the save, delivered the ugliest Stone Cold Stunner of all time to McMahon and added another to McAfee before standing tall.McAfee joining commentary as he beat down Theory was a great moment and a callback to something The Rock used to do at the height of the Attitude Era.The former NFL punter leaping to the top rope and delivering a superplex was a fantastic spot.Theory selling the Stone Cold Stunner was right out of The Rock's playbook and it was superb.McAfee, still smarting after the stunner, was caught enjoying a beer in a fun spot. Given the lack of depth in the tag division, it is likely for the best that Montez Ford and Angelo Dawkins stay fan favorites. This was a fantastic way to kick off the show and set the bar for the rest of the broadcast.Triple H kicked off the show, making his way to the ring and leaving behind his boots, the symbolic sign that his in-ring career has come to an end. Theory's ego proved costly as he tried for A-Town Down, only for McAfee to roll him up and grab a handful of tights for the win. This was not an instance like earlier in the night, where Sami Zayn was absolutely instrumental in the overall success of his match with Johnny Knoxville. McAfee held his own, performed up to the moment and absolutely should be allowed back in the ring whenever the opportunity presents itself. The post-match, which saw an impromptu match between McAfee and Mr. McMahon, threatened to undo everything accomplished by the first match. McAfee exclaimed about Pontius.Wee-Man's appearance popped the crowd and his bodyslam of Zayn was a highlight.Sasha Banks and Naomi, Natalya and Shayna Baszler, and Liv Morgan and Rhea Ripley challenged Queen Zelina and Carmella for the Women's Tag Team Championship in a Fatal 4-Way Match.A spotty match with almost too much going on for its own good saw Banks and Naomi use tandem offense to score the pinfall on Carmella and the titles. The effort was there and all eight women were highlighted well, but with so many competitors looking to get their stuff in, the match consisted more of spots and flashy sequences than any easily trackable narrative. One of the two babyface teams had to win here and, given the fact that Banks had competed at six WrestleManias without a win, this was as good a time as any to right that wrong. A lengthy contest that started slow but built to its false finishes and high spots, it saw Edge score the win after a momentary distraction from Damian Priest. The former United States champion popped up at ringside, momentary preventing Styles from delivering the Phenomenal Forearm. Edge capitalized, delivering a spear that earned the Hall of Famer the win.Was the contest the Match of the Year candidate that many expected it to be? With two world titles and bragging rights on the line, the most heated rivalry in the company came to a head in the show-closing contest of Sunday's action at AT&T Stadium in Dallas.Who emerged with the gold and what went down on the rest of the card when Superstars settled grudges and tag titles were decided?Find out now with this recap of Night 2 of The Showcase of the Immortals.ย Winner Takes All match for WWE and Universal Championships:ย Brock Lesnar vs. He succeeded, delivering a massive verticle suplex to the former tag team champion and following with two spears for the pinfall victory. The match was mercifully short and Omos was not asked to do too much. Sheamus and Ridge Holland (with Butch)The night's opening match saw RK-Bro's Randy Orton and Riddle successfully retain their Raw Tag Team Championship in a Triple Threat Match over The Street Profits and Alpha Academy.A high-energy three-way match that featured one member from each team in the ring at the same time, it was the perfect option to kick off the show. The crowd was into it, the competitors were amped up and the Orton hot tag sparked a phenomenal finishing sequence that concluded with The Viper catching Chad Gable with an RKO mid-flight for the win.The Profits showed respect to the victors post-match, suggesting the teased heel turn we saw the last few weeks will not move forward. The WWE and Universal Championships were on the line in a Winner Takes All match that would shape the future of Raw and SmackDown for the foreseeable future.
Roman Reigns decisively defeats Brock Lesnar, and Vince McMahon wrestles an impromptu match.
Grabbing a microphone, he said he wanted to thank the crowd and welcomed them to WrestleMania. From there it was all teams hitting huge tandem offense on each other, including a crazy Blockbuster from the Street Profits. Orton tried to RKO Dawkins, but Dawkins pushed him off into the ropes and then planted Orton with a spinebuster. Austin hit a huge Stunner on Austin Theory, and it was just McMahon and Austin in the ring. Edge's entrance was awesome, rising to the stage in a throne with flames engulfing the background. The New Day hit a nice flurry of offense on Ridge Holland, then Xavier blasted Sheamus to the outside. Theory tried to do a Superplex, but in an impressive athletic display McAfee backflipped off the top rope and landed on his feet. McMahon then hit a few weak clotheslines on McMahon and threw him into the turnbuckle. After Theory got some heat on McAfee, McAfee bumped Theory to the outside, strapped on the announcer's headphones and did some commentating as he beat Theory about. It's hard to say this wasn't a disappointment, literally billed as the biggest WrestleMania match of all time but it was far from even being the best match between Reigns and Lesnar. Now that Reigns has beaten Lesnar clean in the middle of the ring, the question is what's next? With the ref down, Reigns hit Lesnar with a low blow and then got the title from Heyman and smashed Lesnar with it, a callback to their finish at Crown Jewel last year. Reigns Speared Lesnar from the back -- which actually looked like a botch -- then hit him with another Spear, but Lesnar countered it into a Kimura Lock. Reigns did a great job selling it. The big surprise from the show was an impromptu wrestling match pitting Vince McMahon against Pat McAfee. It was grim, but lead to a great segment involving Stone Cold Steve Austin doing his thing.
Reigns bested Brock Lesnar in the main event on Sunday night for his first win over the now former champion at WrestleMania.
Reigns hit Lesnar with a low blow and Heyman gave him the universal championship, which Reigns used to hit Lesnar and score a two count. McAfee hit one of his trademark spots, landing on his feet on a backflip off the top rope before leaping back to the top rope and hitting Theory with a superplex. Lesnar went for another F-5 only for Reigns to slide out, shoving Lesnar into the ropes and allowing Reigns to hit one final spear for the finish. The finish was pretty sudden and the match was a bit lacking in the overall drama compared to previous Reigns and Lesnar contests. After the match, McAfee taunted McMahon, leading McMahon to take off his jacket and his shirt, striping to a tanktop and bringing a referee to the ring. Lashley then hit a spear to the back and another spear from the front to score the pin. Austin Theory: McAfee got off to a hot start with spinning elbows and ranas to keep Theory on the defensive. Edge: Edge took a smug approach to the start of the match, disrespecting Styles before Styles hit a dropkick and several arm drags to get off to a hot start. Zayn used a baking sheet and a crutch to hit Knoxville across the back before pulling out a table from under the ring. Riddle took out Ford with a springboard RKO as Ford was on the top rope and Orton hit Gable with an RKO of his own as Gable came off the top rope, scoring the win. Styles drove Edge into the ring apron with a superplex, nearly resulting in a double count out but Styles hit a springboard 450 when Edge got back in the ring, resulting in a near fall. In the main event, WWE champion Brock Lesnar clashed with Roman Reigns in a bout to unify WWE's top two championships.
WWE Wrestlemania 38 continues here with Night 2. Here are the winners and losers.
Here was another celebrity match; however, this time around, McAfee has already had a WWE match and is already a part of the company. The match was entertaining and McAfee showed some good skills in the ring. This one can go either way, and honestly, that's what makes the build to this so exciting, compared to some of Lesnar's previous title defenses. Chris: This is exactly the kind of match we all want between these two, just a goofy "hardcore" match with a bunch of weapons and silly spots. Yeah, sure, there's a lot of Brood and Undertaker there, but Edge is evolving, and it was one of the best entrances of Wrestlemania 38. Giving Sasha and Naomi the win is the best of the possible choices, I think. Even still, a match against Omos isn't exactly what any of us wanted for him during this Wrestlemania. I've said it before and I'll say it again, Omos is still too green to work well enough for a spotlight singles match at Wrestlemania. WWE has a lack of giants on the roster at the moment but this isn't the solution. This is a very memorable match for Mania--in a sea of some great matches so far, for the most part. This was a nice comedown match after the ridiculousness of the Knoxville/Zayn match as well. This was a fun opener that got the crowd excited for what's going to be a pretty jam-packed night, though it remains to be seen who else could step up to challenge them at this point. There's always a level of chaos involved when the matches get more populated than a standard tag match, and this one was no exception. He was there to kick off the show and left his boots in the ring, a symbolic gesture for many wrestlers when they retire from competition.
