At the 2022 Grammys, Black Coffee won his first-ever Grammy award, earned in the best dance/electronic album category, with his 2021 LP, Subconsciously.

I wanted to make an album that could be listened to not only in the car or in the club, but while you’re cleaning your house, going through a hard time and everything in between. The win marks the first time a South African producer has won or been nominated in this category. DJ Black Coffee and Esona Maphumulo accept the Best Dance/Electronic Album award for Subconsciously, onstage during the 64th Annual GRAMMY Awards Premiere Ceremony at MGM Grand Marquee Ballroom on April 3, 2022 in Las Vegas.

Awarded for “Subconsciously,” the album featuring Cassie, and Pharrel Williams among other artists, the win establishes Black Coffee (born Nkosinathi Innocent Sizwe Maphumulo) as a global name to be reckoned with. Six of the country’s seven awards have been in one or other variation of the Grammy’s ‘Global Music’ award category, and each one is valuable.
