The Bulls beat Western Province, the Sharks edged Griquas and the Pumas hammered the Lions in Currie Cup action Wednesday.
The Sharks held a 10-6 lead at the break after a converted try to hooker Fez Mbatha and a penalty from flyhalf Tito Bonilla was offset by two penalties to Griquas flyhalf George Whitehead, while the only points of the second half came from a Bonilla penalty. The result means the Sharks have moved six points ahead of the Griquas and three behind the second placed Cheetahs, while the fifth placed Pumas are now breathing down the Griquas necks. A converted try to prop Lizo Gqoboka 10 minutes later then effectively sealed the match for the Bulls, but there was still time for two more Province tries either side of a Bulls penalty try to make it a thrilling end to the contest.

The Lowvelders' recipe in the first half was tellingly simple - ensure they keep a youthful Lions backline on a leash and use their superior bulk and savvy in the collisions and set-pieces. - The young Lions were still out-gunned, but will be encouraged by a good showing in the third quarter. - The Pumas continued their surge in form with a comfortable 45-10 victory over the Lions at home, putting them firmly in semi-final contention again.
The Pumas kicked off the second half of the Currie Cup with a commanding win over the Lions on a hot afternoon in Nelspruit.
Shane Kirkwood came close to doubling the lead with a pick and go, but no conclusive evidence of a grounding materialised. It looked ominous for the under-fire men from Johannesburg when the home team marched over for their first try in short order through hooker Eduan Swart. READ

Johannesburg โ Sorry to say, but the Lions will achieve nothing in the Currie Cup ever again if they do not amend their squad policy.
Hopefully, the Lions management will reconsider, develop and employ a better strategy regarding their squad next season. Sure, they might have learnt a thing or two on Wednesday, but in the end, there is no substitute for winning for both coaches and players For the Pumas, they keep their dream of a Top 4 finish alive but they will have to be far more clinical and ruthless if they have any hope of making a successful run of it in the knockout stages.
The Bulls moved to the top of the Currie Cup log on Wednesday night after a convincing win over Western Province at Loftus Versfeld.
It seemed as if WP could pull off a miraculous upset in Pretoria, but soon enough Kriel grabbed his second try of the night to give the Bulls some breathing room at 31-22. But it appeared as if the Bulls experienced a light-bulb moment in the change-room as they stretched the WP defence out wide in the second half. But with a dominant scrum, the Bulls fought their way back into the game, and prop Robert Hunt forced his way across the whitewash to set up a 10-5 lead.

Of course, it did not help that the visitors lost centre Cornel Smit to a yellow card in the first half, while flank Jarrod Taylor and captain Nama Xaba were sent to the sin bin in the second. There was a moment of controversy when Kriel did score his second try as Bulls hooker Bismarck du Plessis was alleged to have thrown a punch at a Province player in the buildup, but the only footage of the incident was not clear enough for the match officials to make a clear call on it. Western Province, meanwhile, are starting to get cut adrift as they trail the fifth-placed Pumas by seven points, after winning just one game this season.
The Bulls kept their assault on the Currie Cup going with an important 45-34 win over Western Province that held some important lessons too.
