The 2022 Masters officially started Thursday morning, but not before the ceremonial opening tee shots were struck.

Smith, a pretournament favorite to win after top 10 finishes in three of his last four Masters appearances and two PGA Tour victories this season, put his opening tee shot into a deep fairway bunker and his third shot well over the hole, ending with a 6 after his bogey putt rimmed away.

Tiger was greeted with cheers and applause on the first tee, with the hole lined with several layers of patrons all the way to the green. When he saw the receiving line and crowd waiting outside the ropes, it was as if he had to brace himself. It has rained for the past two days, and drizzled again Thursday morning, so the grass outside the clubhouse is slick and even treacherous.
