Nigerian Bishop, Emmanuel Badejo, of Oyo Diocese shares his views about what Palm Sunday is saying to our world today.

Palm Sunday and its relationship to the passion of Jesus Christ reminds us all that true glory is only found in self-giving and sacrifice. Therefore, carrying it is a prayer and a desire for the sustainability of life and humanity. Palm Sunday is the celebration of the triumphant entry of Jesus Christ into Jerusalem, where he was to be crucified.

Palm Sunday Reflection with Fr Robin Gibbons | ICN (Independent Catholic News)

April 10th 2022Palm Sunday of the Lord's Passion Three things leap out at me from our Scriptures this Palm Sunday! The first is Humility: that gentle, ...

And it is only then, at the end of all things, do we like the Humble One who calls us to give all egos up then find the answers in that word Hope. ICN aims to provide speedy and accurate news coverage of all subjects of interest to Catholics and the wider Christian community. I think we clergy need to just shut up going on about the sufferings of Jesus and instead let those who have suffered speak instead, or let their words speak instead of ours. Palm Sunday is an antidote to this, for we move from a kind of battered and wounded triumph, to a time of malice, sin, desolation, then to betrayal and death. Worse still is the way one Religious Leader has ignored calls to plead for an end to the conflict and instead used religious faith as a call to arms. The prophecy Jesus is fulfilling tells us that humility and lack of proper legal/civil/religious reception is key to the `Messiah's coming. I wonder if this Holy Week we could really take our faith in Jesus by the metaphorical scruff of the neck and shake it, spring-cleaning it like that done at Passover, get rid of all the old leaven. And they are right, sometimes we can't, for it is only God who forgives ! That raw desolation is a psalm for our century and time. Yet the Saviour of the World loves it, rides it, makes it part of salvation's story, and with this animal, the children and women, the ignored ones welcome him. First of all, I have Covid, and that has altered my whole mood somewhat, it's a struggle, in the exhausted tiredness, the coughing and battles to clear lungs, to even think of doing anything else. I have no patience with this, when we were ordained it was not for our status, grandeur, position, pleasure or convenience, it was as servants of that One Servant, to go on giving without counting the cost. One antidote is to challenge anyone who puts up such stuff, point out those who get on with things, or the suffering ones, such as those in Ukraine who even now are hiding in bomb shelters, not knowing if the world cares much.

After completing his studies, he worked as a trainee-chartered accountant in central London. It was on a pilgrimage to the shrine of Our Lady of Lourdes (France) that led him to rediscover his love for his Catholic faith and to question his vocation. Instead, they pass swiftly into the hands of the Father of all, along the way opened up for us by Christ our Saviour. He surrendered his soul into the hands of his Father to give us a firm faith and a sure hope that in him and through him we, too, shall pass when we die into the hands of God” (Commentary on St John’s Gospel, lib. During the Mass, in the Eucharistic Prayer, when the priest raises the Host and shows it to the people, and raises the chalice, saying, “Do this in memory of me,” it is as if Christ himself is being raised up on the cross before us. In 1436, he was one of a number of friars who moved to the newly built Friary of San Marco in Florence. He enjoyed the patronage of Cosimo de’ Medici, one of the wealthiest and most powerful members of the city’s governing authority. It was once thought that Jerusalem was, at the beginning of time, the site of the Garden of Eden. Christ is the new Adam, reversing the sin of our first parents. Here we see the judgment seat of the Lord” (Sermo 8 in Passione Domini). St John sees the cross as Christ’s throne from which he dispenses his honours list: the good thief is offered salvation, the executioners are granted forgiveness, and Mary is named Mother of all his disciples. Instead, whenever we gather for the celebration of Mass, the events of the past are brought forward into the present moment—Christ’s sacrifice on the cross is brought forward into the present moment (CCC 1362–1366). And so, that sacrifice on the cross for the forgiveness of sins, his one great act of salvation and greatest expression of God’s love, is not an event stuck in the past or confined to history, but it is an event for all time, made available to all people, of every generation, whenever and wherever the sacrifice of the Mass is offered. They are not transported back through time, but the events of the past are brought forward into the present moment; the events of the Exodus are made present in the hearts and minds of all believers. Every time the Jewish people celebrate the Passover meal, they are not just remembering the events of the Exodus (when God led the people of Israel out of slavery in Egypt and into freedom), but every time they celebrate the Passover meal it is as if they are actually brought into contact with the events of the past. And so, whenever we gather for the celebration of Mass, we are not just remembering the events of the past—the Last Supper and sacrifice of Christ on the cross which took place some 2,000 years ago. Born and raised in a Jewish family, Jesus was part of the Jewish tradition. To them, the memorial is not just a remembering of past events now confined to history, but in a memorial celebration, the events of the past are brought forward into the present moment.

Palm Sunday: Everything changes in Jesus' journey (Johnson City Press)

Today's Palm Sunday message comes from the Rev. Will Shewey, pastor at Shades of Grace United Methodist Church in Kingsport.

This 40-day Lenten journey began on Ash Wednesday. Dried palm leaves left over from last year’s Palm Sunday observance were burned, and the ashes were smudged upon believers’ foreheads in the image of a cross. I always remind each one that this branch is a testimony of sharing faith. He crosses the threshold of the Mount of Olives for a final visit. Surely, he who comes in the name of the Lord will set up an earthly kingdom and reign from the throne once occupied by David. They had missed the point of all his sermons. Lent comes from an old English word that means “spring.” As the holiday called Easter draws near, we celebrate new life and resurrection from the sleep of winter that has covered earth. Christians around the world have been observing a 40-day liturgical season called Lent. The focus has been upon repentance.

Palm Sunday reminds us that no situation robs the Lord of his peace (Crux: Covering all things Catholic)

The Lord's humility allowed him and his mission to be untouched by the acceptance, or rejection, by the crowd. He stood before God the Father.

Even as the crowds wanted the Lord Jesus to be an earthly king that would rid them of the oppression of Rome, the Lord entered riding on a colt. The Lord’s humility allowed him and his mission to be untouched by the acceptance, or rejection by the crowd. Either way, the use of garments or branches were customs used to show reverence to a person of great esteem. For Saint Luke, whom the Sunday Mass readings are following this liturgical year, the Lord’s journey to Jerusalem was extensively recounted in ten chapters of his gospel. It is the week that liturgically celebrates the saving events of our redemption. This Sunday, the Church enters the holiest week of the year.

What the angels sang above the stable in Bethlehem on Christmas night, today resounds with a loud echo on the threshold of Holy Week, in which Jesus prepares to complete his messianic mission, achieving the world’s redemption through his Cross and Resurrection. This act [of handing over the World Youth Day cross] has its own particular eloquence: it is a rediscovery as it were by young people of the significance of Palm Sunday, when they in effect take the lead. All, like their predecessors in the Holy Land, want to accompany Christ, to share in the week of his Passion, of his Triduum Sacrum, of his Cross and Resurrection. They know that he is that “Blessed” One who “comes in the name of the Lord”, bringing peace on earth and glory in the highest.

The Passion narrative is read and the faithful participates throughout the reading. Yes. Palm Sunday can also be referred to as Passion Sunday. Palm Sunday comes from the fact that it honors Jesus’ entrance into Jerusalem, where the people carried palm branches. Palm harvesters can be found around the world. The procession symbolizes those who went to meet the Lord as he entered Jerusalem. The Gospel reading is also much longer than usual. Palm Sunday is the day we remember and honor Jesus’ entrance into Jerusalem a week before his crucifixion would take place. All four Gospels tell us that people cut branches from palm trees and laid them across Jesus’ path and waved them in the air as he entered Jerusalem triumphantly a week before his death.

Catholic Faithful Observe 'PALM SUNDAY' a Week before 'EASTER SUNDAY' in 'Rome of the East' Mangaluru: The season of Lent has always called for.

In the first part of the service, the faithful remembered the entrance of Jesus into Jerusalem, acclaimed by all the people, by taking part in the procession. The blessing of the Palms ceremony was held in front of the Athma Jyothi Ashram, Souza Lane, Kadri in the City , and the palms were blessed by Fr Peter Cyprian D’souza and Fr Dolphy Devdas Serrao, both in-charge at the Ashram, following which the palms were distributed to the faithful. After the procession, the solemn Mass was celebrated in remembrance of the passion of Christ, by the clergy. Palm Sunday is both a happy and sad day. Christians take these palms, which are often blessed by clergy, to their homes where they hang them alongside Christian art (especially crosses and crucifixes) or keep them in their Bibles or devotionals. Quite a few Catholic faithful remained home and watched the Palm Sunday ceremony on TV or online, but for people who attend church regularly, there was nothing like the real thing — whether it’s the quiet happiness of Palm Sunday, the solemnity of Good Friday, or all-out rejoicing on Easter Sunday.

A Christian Tradition (Jamestown Post Journal)

This weekend the Christian church celebrates Palm Sunday. What exactly is Palm Sunday? It is the day that Jesus made his triumphal entry into Jerusalem.

When the loaf is finished, I add a glaze so that it mimics hot cross buns. That is a pastry that I have always enjoyed. I do make bread in my bread machine that is almost like hot cross buns. Having been part of the Christian community for many years I have attended a variety of Palm Sunday services. At twenty-one years of age, he became a priest dedicating his life to the poor. I also remember going to a small bakery down in the Polish section of town. Although born of royal blood he gave up his money, property, and title to do the work of the Lord. If your church does not sing the song take a few moments to read the words. This weekend the Christian church celebrates Palm Sunday. What exactly is Palm Sunday? It is the day that Jesus made his triumphal entry into Jerusalem. First, he was treated like a king, but later was ridiculed and beaten. Although that is true, in the Christian life nothing is more important than the saving grace provided by the death and resurrection of our Lord. The man was Theodulph of Orleans. He was said to be unfit for public service by the church leaders. Years ago, a minister asked during our youth group which holiday was most significant – Easter or Christmas. At that time, I thought that Christmas was most important.

Jesus, the Pope recalled, did not rebuke His executioners or threaten punishments in the name of God, but rather prayed for the evildoers. The Lord did not defend or justify Himself. Rather, He prayed to the Father, offered mercy to the good thief, and said: “Father, forgive them” amid "the most searing physical pain" of His Passion.
