UFC 273 LIVE: Aussie Volk in huge test as title double-header, rising star headline blockbuster card.
That did not eventuate but Pichel was later able to hit Madsen with a flurry of punches, cementing the round late. The main card opened with Mark Madsen defeating Vinc Pichel via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 29-28). The opening two rounds were relatively even and uneventful in the sense neither was able to gain the clear upperhand. Both went on to exchange punches and kicks before Pichel landed a late right hand at the end of the round. “It’s 15 minutes in the cage, I ain’t happy with it. You don’t want to all see blowouts,” he said. Madsen though responded with a takedown, although Pichel was able to get back up without much sustaining much damage. It’s a very valuable lesson, win, lose or draw.” And on Sunday (AEST) in Jacksonville, with his third title defence, Alexander ‘The Great’ Volkanovski made one thing clear: he runs the UFC’s featherweight division. If not, you’re going to miss out, it’s that f***ing simple.” In some ways, it was. “He actually took a lot more than I wanted him to. I thought they could have stopped it a bit earlier.
Two title fights and the return of Khamzat Chimaev highlight a big card at UFC 273. Follow live.
Hansen got a takedown in the first round, landed some decent ground-and-pound and finished the first five minutes working for an arm-triangle choke. For the graybeard 44-year-old Russian, the neck crank he used to elicit a tapout from Vanderaa was his 47th submission victory in a 60-fight career. But the referee rightly stepped in to save Gall and end the fight. Fremd agreed to take the fight on short notice in his UFC debut. Pennington, of Colorado Springs, picked up her fourth win in a row by thoroughly outpointing the 27-year-old Ladd. All three judges awarded the fight to Pennington, 29-28. In the third round, Garry started getting into his rhythm when he dropped Weeks with a right hand and landed a big left head kick. It felt like he was landing every combination he threw, including the one at the end of the round that nearly stopped Jung. Early in the fourth, it was over. Chimaev (10-0) is now 5-0 in the UFC and the previous four wins all came via finish. She is a multiple-time jiu-jitsu world champion, one of the best grapplers in all of MMA, with submissions in seven of her 11 victories. To his credit, Burns was able to get another wind and land some shots later in the round. Chimaev dropped Burns with a perfect left jab near the end of the first round and nearly finished with huge ground and pound. The answer to the latter question was a resounding yes.

A wild night of action from Jacksonville, Florida, wrapped up with Alexander Volkanovski reminding why he is the top featherweight in the world.
Two major title fights will take place April 10 at the VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena in Jacksonville, when the UFC returns to Florida with UFC 273. The main event will be Australia's Alexander Volkanovski vs. "The Korean Zombie" Chan Sung Jung for the ...
Ian Garry def. That's probably close to what just happened, with Madsen remaining perfect after a wrestle-centric three rounds. Round 3: They go the distance with Torres turning the tide in the third with a heel kick off the ground and some looping overhand rights. Round 2: This is more what we expected: Dern all over Torres like the cheapest of court appearance suits. Round 2: That could have been Burns' round and the first round in Chimaev's UFC career that he's lost. A heck of a way to start this fi--- the round isn't over! Herb Dean has seen enough and calls it off - yet Zombie is still on his feet! How is this fight third on the bill? This is Yan's round but, probably, he'll need a finish to get the belt back - especially with that possible 10-8 in round 2 from Sterling. Sterling's corner is giving instructions that sound dangerously like, "fire truck him cup". Round 4: Despite it being Aljo's domain, Yan gets top position and doesn't relinquish it to get the fight back to the feet. It's all body triangle from Sterling Yan rolls and gets flattened out for a few seconds, but rolls back over again. Round 3: Volkanovski continues, picking off the Zombie with a combination of jabs, body shots and the occasional takedown attempt.
Mackenzie Dern defeated Tecia Torres by split decision in a closely contested bout, doing just enough in the first two rounds to secure the victory. This fight ...
This was a fight that was right there for Pichel (14–3), who entered the bout having won three in a row and seven of his last eight. The card also features a bantamweight unification title bout pitting Aljamain Sterling against Petr Yan. This fight features an unparalleled backstory, as Yan intentionally injured Sterling in their last fight and has shown no remorse for nearly ending his career. But the fight with the most intrigue will be third from last, with Khamzat Chimaev seeking to continue bulldozing his way through the UFC’s welterweight division. Torres was in a bad place for almost the entire second round, but found new life in the third after landing an up kick to Dern’s face. So this fight ending in a unanimous decision seems awfully hard to believe, especially considering Burns won the second round in lopsided fashion. Torres (13–6) has never been finished as an MMA pro, though that came precariously close to changing in the second round when Dern (12–2) applied her kimura. Yet Burns survived the onslaught, then did damage to Chimaev in the second round. This TKO victory was a clinic for Volkanovski (24–1). Referee Herb Dean made the right call in stopping the fight, and he could have even called for a stoppage sooner. This was the only fight of the main card not to end by decision, and the performance further highlights Volkanovski’s brilliance. Yan came out furiously in the fourth, shifting his approach to control the round with ground-and-power. Pichel (14–3) looked his best in the second round, but he delivered no substantial offense in the final five minutes. The win is certainly important for Chimaev, but he likely needs one more win before he earns himself a title shot.
Chimaev and Burns may well have put on the Fight of the Year on Saturday night in Jacksonville.
"I wanted to be 11-0 with 11 finishes. Chimaev popped back up to land a huge combination before a brawl ensued with Chimaev soon bleeding from his nose. "I go against the odds, I don't care. I won't stop." Just 15 months after he lost a shot at Kamaru Usman's welterweight title despite dropping the defending champion, the 35-year-old Burns routinely answered the huge strikes of Chimaev in order to hold his ground. This is just what I do for work to make money.
At UFC 273, Khamzat Chimaev defeated Gilbert Burns via unanimous decision in a dramatic welterweight bout.
With the victory, Chimaev continues rocketing up the UFC ladder toward a title. Burns was widely-regarded as a leap up in competition for "Borz," who has now won all five of his UFC fights inside the distance. As the final horn sounded, Chimaev laid on top of Burns but wouldn't let go. Burns shoved him off and Chimaev landed an open-hand slap - all after the horn. Another giant Burns punch floored Chimaev to the canvas. The first round played out as many of Chimaev's fights have in the past.
UFC 273's main card saw Khamzat Chimaev defeat Gilbert Burns in a thriller. Stars across social media offered their thoughts on the action-packed fight.
Burns/Chimaev #UFC273" The Rock a.k.a Dwyane Johnson Chimaev drew blood in the first round, but Burns rebounded in the second with some huge shots of his own. Phenom Khamzat Chimaev faced perhaps his toughest challenge yet in Gilbert Burns Saturday night.
Volkanovski looks for his third straight featherweight world title defense when he clashes with Chan Sung Jung in the main event.
Torres turned the tide in the third round with a heel kick to the face and an up kick that pounded Dern's chest and just missed the Brazilian's chin. Burns stings Chimaev with a few punches to the side of the head before shoving him off with a kick square in the chest. Chimaev with a body kick that drops Burns with a thud. Sterling goes for a takedown, and Yan greets him with a stinging left. Sterling with a slick jab and kick to the body as he moves fluidly around the Octagon. Yan is menacing and trying to walk the champ down. But that came late as Burns was able to pepper Chimaev with shots earlier in the round. Sterling battles back, and they're in the center of the Octagon. Sterling again threatening a takedown. He follows with a knee to the gut, and Sterling returns fire. Sterling gets the takedown he's been coveting and he's threatening a rear-naked choke. First, Volkanovski throws a leg kick that wobbles Zombie. Volkanovski with a straight left followed by a devastating right hook that buzzes the hell out of Zombie. Another punishing right lands, and Herb Dean steps in and ends it. The champ has Yan's back and is trying to muscle a takedown but Yan wriggles free. Yan drives Sterling back with a flurry of punches.
Alexander Volkanovski mauled Chan Sung Jung at UFC 273, earning a TKO seconds into the fourth round to retain the featherweight belt.
But the 32-year-old Torres (13-6) escaped two submission holds and was impressive over the final five minutes to nearly upset the fifth-ranked woman in the strawweight division. Yan (16-3) battled back in the final two rounds, doing enough to get a split decision. With her husband and young daughter sitting cage side, Dern dominated the second round thanks to a variety of Brazilian jiu-jitsu moves. It was Chimaev’s most impressive outing to date and proved he’s a potential championship contender. But he was considerably quicker than Jung, essentially putting on a clinic in mixed martial arts. Jung, better known as ‘the Korean Zombie’, was battered, bloodied and struggling to breathe after the first three rounds.

Sterling took control of the fight early on the ground and never looked back as he exorcised his demons.
"I think I won three rounds of the fight. Yan was much busier to open Round 4 and not only was he much better at keeping his back off the ground, his quick transitions out of trouble led to some sequences of big strikes from top position. Yan, 29, appeared lucky to get out of the second round after Sterling, who was relentless in pursuit of takedowns, pulled Yan down and instantly took his back. "I think I won this fight and I got robbed," Yan said through a translator. 'Craziest fight ever watched': UFC stunned over bloody 'war'
“Who’s the famous fighter? Who’s the most people [talking] about? Those guys don’t know how to get up, the other ones didn’t know how to wrestle. And that he did. “I don’t see a monster. You either make it through or you don’t. He made it through with flying colours.”
Jung, the beloved South Korean brawler nicknamed "The Korean Zombie," replaced Max Holloway in January after the former champion pulled out of his trilogy bout ...
Lead right from Jung lands before the horn. Volkanovski is trying to land the big one. R2: Big jab from the champion. 10-9 Volkanovski Volkanovski jumps on top and flurries big but the Zombie survives. Although Volkanovski acknowledged after that a trilogy against Holloway could still be in the cards, he sent a message to the rest of the division. Subscribe to Morning Kombat with Luke Thomas and Brian Campbell for the best analysis and in-depth news, including an instant reaction at the conclusion of the PPV event. I will have to think on that." He mixed in calf strikes beautifully with punching combinations and routinely buzzed or dropped Jung with nearly every big power shot. "I told you all before this fight that I am on another level now and can't be stopped," Volkanovski said. Although Jung set a record for the most time passed between title fights after trying unsuccessfully in 2013 to unseat Jose Aldo, he was simply never in the fight against Volkanovski. If there was any disappointment in having to face a late replacement as an opponent on Saturday, Alexander Volkanovski never showed it.
Who will the standouts from UFC 273 fight next? Brett Okamoto plays matchmaker.
She doesn't need to get to a title fight in 2022. Yan is a scary opponent, and Cruz would have to be perfect. It was a close fight that could have gone either way, but the UFC is not about to run it back again. He was willing to take the fight the rest of the division didn't want in Chimaev, and he very nearly pulled it off as a significant underdog. There are a lot of moving parts in all of this, and I don't know if Burns and Usman would ever fight again, unless there were a title on the line. But Chimaev looked human in this fight, and Covington is one of the best in the world. If Edwards loses to Usman, this makes a ton of sense -- although I will say, I think the UFC would take a close look at Edwards vs. He accepted all of that, and put on one of the best performances of his career, even in a loss. The UFC is looking at a return to England this summer. A part of me hates to see them fight because one has to lose and then you lose a potential title challenger. But Allen is still looking to build his profile, and a fight against Jung would do that. Jung is 35 and says he still has a little left in the tank.
Mike Malott was met with a ton of donations after the fighter gave his $10000 win bonus to his coach to help with his daughter's battle against cancer.
UFC boss White almost matched Paul in his efforts as he said Malott can keep his win bonus as he will donate $10,000 to his cause. Paul caught onto the news that Malott was giving away half of his money and said: "Mike Malott congrats on the win. Malott is on the UFC's most basic salary package but showed selfishness by donating his $10,000 win bonus to his coach.
Khamzat Chimaev is still undefeated, but he is clearly not invincible. The Chechen-born Swede returned to the UFC's Octagon in the middle bout of the UFC ...
Now we know he can take a hard shot. And while all three scored the fight in Chimaev's favor, it was clear as the decision was being read that something had changed. But we didn't know how he'd respond when the early finish failed to materialize. Given the way both men were fighting, it was frankly shocking that the judges were required, but that's the way it happened. Entering the fight, the widespread belief was that Chimaev would slice through his more experienced foe, whether he got the job done by way of knockout or submission. Despite their dwindling energy reserves, the pair continued to fight with extreme intensity for the entirety of that final round, pelting each other with punches that most likely would have stopped lesser fighters in their tracks.
Chimaev had a more difficult time than he did in his first four UFC wins, but he proved he can beat an elite foe.
Will anyone ever steal the show from the 27-year-old Chechnya-born Swede? If he does end up in the cage with Covington, as the UFC would like, Chimaev (11-0) would surely be a crowd favorite, but what would the oddsmakers say? Chimaev clearly had proved to them that he belongs in the top tier. Saturday was a big night for fighters proving their worthiness of the exalted place they already hold in the sport. All champions in all divisions are called upon to prove themselves every time -- but for Sterling the demand was more so. He dropped Burns with a crisp jab, and from top position on the canvas he dropped punches and elbows, one of which opened a cut on the Brazilian's head. He even looked ahead to Chimaev's next one, saying that if the Chechnya-born Swede defeated Burns, the UFC would try to book him against Covington on a rare network TV show. When UFC president Dana White went on SiriusXM radio to promote the pay-per-view, he spoke just a little about Alexander Volkanovski's main event featherweight title defense against Chan Sung Jung. He said not a word about the co-main bantamweight title bout between champ Aljamain Sterling and former champ Petr Yan. Instead, White spent much of his time talking about Chimaev, "somebody that people are very excited about." And despite Burns' lofty credentials and Chimaev's relative inexperience at a high level, many had no hesitation in predicting a Chimaev win. Standing across the cage from Chimaev on Saturday was a fighter on a whole different level. This time he was in a competitive fight. Burns had been bloodied and beaten down in a brutal opening round, but he had survived. A 124-2 edge in total strikes in his UFC debut.
