Man City given major injury boost for Liverpool title race run-in (Liverpool Echo)

Manchester City defender Ruben Dias has returned to training ahead of the title race run-in against Liverpool.

He's been a mainstay in Guardiola's side prior to his injury a number of weeks ago. Liverpool, on the other hand, face arguably the more difficult schedule with Everton, Manchester United, Tottenham, Newcastle, Aston Villa, Southampton and Wolves making up their run-in. It has been reported that, while he's back in team training, their clash against Atletico Madrid midweek in the Champions League could come too soon.

Brilliant Man City must heed familiar warning after Liverpool classic (Manchester Evening News)

Jesus failed to notice the runs of De Bruyne and Sterling in-between the lines of defenders and tracking-back midfielders. Joao Cancelo dinked the ball between the defenders to find De Bruyne in a small pocket of space, where he swivelled and shot in one action but dragged his effort into the side netting. He took a touch to set himself, prepared to pull the trigger as Allison advanced out of goal and... Jesus had hared into the penalty area after running onto a De Bruyne through ball, but he decided to shoot from a tight angle and hit the side netting. City twice took the lead thanks to first-half strikes from Kevin de Bruyne and Gabriel Jesus, but were twice pegged back as Diogo Jota and Sadio Mane came to Liverpool's rescue. If there is one criticism that can be levelled at the Premier League champions, it is that they waste too many clear chances.

City and Liverpool are likely to share all of the domestic silverware available between them this season. “The schedule is so hard for both clubs, the games come thick and fast, and the quality of the Premier League is so high, it's going to be a massive challenge. City ended Sunday's game with the feeling of an opportunity missed to put one hand on the Premier League trophy, given they were the dominant team, but were ultimately unable to break Liverpool's impressive resistance.

Monday is a recovery day, Tuesday we leave for Madrid and it is the same for the FA Cup game. We are aware of Liverpool’s quality, their level and that they are going to push us until the end.” Neutrals will hope that end comes on May 28. That is maybe a good thing because you just play, play, play and then we will see what happens.” Few would bet against it happening even if no one at City is allowing themselves to focus anywhere but the next game. No one has to wait long for Man City-Liverpool II with the pair clashing at Wembley this Saturday in the FA Cup semi-final. And the verdict of honourable draw left most satisfied.

Manchester City vs Liverpool player ratings (NBC Sports)

Manchester City vs Liverpool player ratings: How fared best (and worst) as the defending Premier League champions played the Reds to a thrilling 2-2 draw?

Mohamed Salah: 7 – Put his diagonal through ball, setting up Sadio Mane’s goal, in a museum. Rodri: 6.5 – It wasn’t a game played at a tempo that fit Rodri’s style and strengths, but he’s a vital piece of the operation and remains undroppable for that fact. Trent Alexander-Arnold: 7 – TAA almost requires an attacking rating and a defensive rating at this point, for being so brilliant at the former and absentminded when it comes to the latter. He repaid the faith Guardiola put in him to start such a big game after struggling for regular starts. The amount of quality on display resulted in lots of 7s and 8s being handed out. Guardiola wasn’t going to be beaten that way.

Manchester City played out an entertaining 2-2 draw with Liverpool FC that keeps the Premier League title in their own hands.

It's a draw in the end and now we need to believe from here until the end." Goalscorer Jota also gave an insight into Liverpool's tactical approach, telling BBC: "We tried to condition their game the way they wanted but they are obviously very good at what they do so it's not easy. I'm already in the Benfica game but of course we will try to understand the moments. We could do better but in a lot of moments we did really well. They had a more direct idea than us and we wanted to let them run when in possession. In moments when we tried to breathe a little bit, another one comes.

Chaotic and enthralling: The four key tactics that made Man City vs ... (Telegraph.co.uk)

Inswinging crosses, high defensive lines and Pep Guardiola changing his usual midfield structure helped shape the game of the season.

Two high lines mean there is little space in the middle of the park, giving the game a physical edge in the second period. More specifically, Liverpool and City are great exponents of in-swinging or diagonal crosses to the back post, with two of the game's goals arriving via this route. Guardiola always wants a numerical advantage against the first line of pressing: he will leave build up to two centre-backs against one striker, three players against a front two, four against a front three and so on (with the goalkeeper always a spare player). Liverpool have to play with a high defensive line to remain compact, and this fact can be misunderstood. Showing a player down the line forces the defence into retreat, but arguably leads to less dangerous delivery. Against the more reactive style of Atletico Madrid, they pushed Bernardo higher to make their usual line of five in attack. Two of the players most likely to be match-winners are paradoxically viewed as potentially vulnerable pressure points by the opposition. Equally impressive was the way in which City ringed the final third and counter-pressed effectively, with Liverpool caught between clearing their lines and playing out. "You've seen teams push up in the past, you know we saw the Arsenal team with Tony Adams push high at times but never like we've seen these two teams in this game today." The diamond is created with Phil Foden wide left, Gabriel Jesus wide right and De Bruyne operating behind Sterling. Guardiola was able to take a player out of his attack yet remain threatening. If there is a choice between allowing Liverpool comfortable possession or grass to run into, choose the former.

GARY NEVILLE suggests that the stakes were different for Manchester City and Liverpool in Sunday's clash.

They may also have to contend with two matches against Bayern Munich if the German giants overturn a one-goal deficit against Villarreal. Despite tinges of disappointment, a single point keeps the contest in City's hands with just seven matches left to play. Gabriel Jesus then beat the offside trap shortly before half time to restore City's advantage.

Man City's final seven Premier League fixtures compared to title ... (Manchester Evening News)

Manchester City and Liverpool have faced each other in the Premier League so who do they have left to play and when?

City take on Gerrard's Villa at the Etihad while Liverpool have the exact same fixture that they had at the end of the 2018/19 season when the Blues pipped them to the title by a point. Southampton took points off City recently and have the style to hurt Liverpool, although Chelsea did show at the weekend that Ralph Hasenhuttl's side can implode. City take on Leeds later that day at Elland Road, another side who have picked up their form in recent weeks to pull clear of the teams in trouble. Liverpool face another huge match on paper as they play their closest rivals Everton, although the United criteria applies; they are not a good team. United is traditionally a huge rival for Liverpool and their fans would love nothing more than to stop Liverpool's momentum, although while Ralf Rangnick's side are fighting for European qualification they have shown nothing to suggest they can win games of football against good teams. Whereas both teams before the weekend could say that the title race was in their hands, Jurgen Klopp's side are now reliant on a slip from City after seeing their winning streak ended by them.

City's have an average position of 12th, with the highest in sixth and the lowest down in 19th. Opponents Wolves kept the Reds at bay until the 94th minute when they met in December, and a similar level of tension on May 22 might be too much to bear. The last two weekends of the season will see City in action against teams in claret and blue, and both are potential banana skins. Theirs is away from home, though, and the closeness of the December meeting suggests it could be tricky. After that, it's three of the teams in the relegation picture. City and Liverpool both face a bit of a wait before returning to Premier League action.

If anyone thinks that’s it, done and dusted, I cannot help.” There is a belief in Liverpool yet, and they will haunt Manchester City with it. We are still a point behind, and every week there is a surprising result in the Premier League. We’re just hoping we are not on the end of one and City are. He was resolute after the game on the job Liverpool now have to do: put as much pressure on their rivals, until they reach breaking point: “It was very important for us not to lose this game. But with the distraction of the Champions League they are obsessed with, can they also resist the pressure the Reds have vowed to put on; a pressure like no other. That was their primary aim at the Etihad, and it is clear they believe it was hugely important. Instead, there was a resolve, a clear intent even, on the job they must now do in the most enthralling race, well, since they last went toe to toe with Manchester City in that titanic run-in back in 2019.

Liverpool and Manchester City run-in predictions: Projecting all the ... (Sporting News)

Manchester City and Liverpool played out a thrilling 2-2 draw on April 10, but who has the title advantage? Both teams have seven Premier League games to ...

Liverpool won 10 in a row heading into Sunday and City have lost once in the Premier League since October. They are a cut above the competition. But, in truth, the boldest predictions in there are the games where we suggest City and Liverpool will drop points. Gerrard and Coutinho, who were denied in heartbreaking fashion when City pipped Liverpool in 2014, might be able to provide a final twist. Okay, in a manner neither of these formidable teams are likely to, we’ve bottled it a bit. All City’s league games against David Moyes’s side have been tight and tough over the past two seasons and the Hammers ended their League Cup reign on penalties last October. They are in a small Premier League minority who seem to relish facing Guardiola’s side, but a season petering out into midtable might temper their appetite for a scrap. A week after hosting Liverpool, Newcastle will continue to have their say in the title race. This could really be a huge weekend in the title race. Tottenham’s 2-2 draw with Liverpool started a December wobble for Klopp’s side, and Spurs then won a chaotic encounter at the Etihad Stadium in February. Klopp’s only win over Conte came in the first of their five meetings back in September 2016. The Times reported that Guardiola extensively studied footage of Southampton against Liverpool to prepare for Sunday’s encounter, so it’s fair to assume Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side have ways to hurt Klopp and his players. In the 2018-19 knife-edge battle between City and Liverpool, Klopp’s side played out a thriller at St James’ Park and prevailed 3-2 on the season’s penultimate weekend. Three days after playing City again at Wembley, this would look like a huge red flag in Liverpool’s run-in.

That Mahrez’s failure to secure all three points is what give Liverpool the hope to stay in the fight. Yet Liverpool still have hope of being able to overturn just the point that separates both teams. Had Dembélé scored that, it would have been 4-0 going into the second leg and surely Liverpool couldn’t have overturned that much of a deficit.
