Rory McIlroy and Collin Morikawa holed-out from same bunker on 18 for an incredible Masters moment at Augusta National Golf Club.

The sand-save earned McIlroy the week’s first bogey-free round as he shot up the leaderboard on the final day to post a 8-under 64 and put up a number at 7 under for the tournament, just three shots behind 54-hole leader Scottie Scheffler at the time. Both players found the back-right bunker behind Augusta National Golf Club’s final hole and both proceeded to hole-out on consecutive shots, sending the patrons into an absolute frenzy of cheers and chants of “Rory! Rory!” and “Collin! Collin!” This year at the 86th playing of the first men’s major of the year, it seemed like Tiger Woods’ return to competitive golf would take the crown.

Rory McIlroy, still stalking his first green jacket, had the Masters patrons roaring with a Sunday 64 capped by a holeout from the bunker at the 18th hole.

This week was the 32-year-old's eighth attempt to finish the career grand slam. "I've never heard roars like that at the 18th." To play as well as I did today, and to finish like this, it's absolutely incredible," McIlroy said after the round on the CBS broadcast.

Rory McIlroy finishes historic Masters round with unreal bunker shot (New York Post)

Rory McIlroy finished his remarkable final round at the 2022 Masters in style – now he waits to see if his charge was enough.

It is one off the course record of 63 held by Nick Price (1934) and Greg Norman (1996). His bogey-free round included six birdies and an eagle. McIlroy, 32, chipped a bunker shot near the middle of the green at par-4 18 and saw it take a long and perfect left turn into the cup for a round-sealing birdie at Augusta on Sunday.

'Absolutely incredible': Rory McIlroy ties lowest final-round score in ... (Golf.com)

Rory McIlroy's struggles at Augusta National have been well documented, but on Sunday at the Masters, he put that narrative to rest.

McIlroy’s spectacular Sunday vaulted him up the leaderboard and put him alone in second place. The 32-year-old carded six birdies, an eagle and zero bogeys on the day. And although he’s won four majors in the years since his first heartbreak, the green jacket has eluded him.

Scottie Scheffler holds nerve to win Masters after Rory McIlroy's late ... (The Guardian)

The world No 1 earned his first major in style as Rory McIlroy climbed to second with a remarkable round of 64.

It is astonishing to think that before the first of them, the Phoenix Open in February, Scheffler had not prevailed on the PGA Tour. He has been utterly relentless since. The 25-year-old made a birdie at the 15th, the final demonstration of a grip he was unwilling to loosen. To be precise: $2.7m, a Green Jacket and fourth victory of 2022. Not then short-sided into a bunker because of the slopes that they’ve created and stuff. If you hit a good shot, you should end up near the hole. It will not always be this way for Scheffler, it just feels otherwise at the moment. Zalatoris therefore finished in a share of sixth. Scheffler’s birdie at the 14th owed everything to a wonderful approach shot. Of the 18th scene, McIlroy said: “This tournament never ceases to amaze. Scheffler had found trouble on the 3rd, from where he could only leave an approach short of the green. McIlroy reached the turn in 32 and delivered a birdie at the 10th before punching the air at the time of his eagle on 13. The stuff of dreams.

What is the Masters course record? Rory McIlroy makes final-round ... (Sporting News)

Rory McIlroy entered Sunday's action at the Masters 1 over par for the tournament. He was 10 strokes back of leader Scottie Scheffler when he teed off, ...

The Masters course record for a single round is 63. His 20-under par mark broke the tournament record of 18-under par that had previously been held by Tiger Woods and Jordan Spieth. He overcame a seven-stroke deficit by shooting 8-under par to win the tournament in 1978. A decade later, Greg Norman was able to match Price with a 63 during the first round of the 1996 Masters. That gave him a two-stroke lead over Phil Mickelson at the time. That shot put McIlroy within three strokes of Scheffler and made him the clubhouse leader when he exited the course. He was 10 strokes back of leader Scottie Scheffler when he teed off, and it didn't look like he would have a realistic shot at earning his first green jacket.
