Liverpool vs Benfica: Ratings and analysis as Firmino double sends ... (iNews)

Jurgen Klopp will have much to ponder after his heavily rotated side made heavy work against Benfica at Anfield.

There was, however, too little time for Benfica. There will be plenty of time before the semi-final for Klopp to digest the lessons of this match. Yaremchuk is Ukrainian, who played for Dynamo Kyiv, while at Charlton Gomez was coached by Sergei Baltacha, a citizen of Mariupol, the Stalingrad of our times. The ball skimmed the top of Otamendi’s head and Firmino tapped in. Vlachodimos could only parry a shot, the ball was scooped back into the mix by Jota and Firmino finished things off for his first Champions League goal in two years. However, VAR ruled that the ball had come off James Milner’s boot. Even against a Liverpool side that had made seven changes from the team that had just failed to inflict a decisive blow in Sunday’s “ title decider”, everything had to fall perfectly for Benfica and in the 21st minute things fell very badly indeed.

Liverpool hold a commanding 3-1 lead in their Champions League quarter-final tie with Benfica ahead of the second leg at Anfield. Follow all the updates ...

As he was in the first leg, Darwin Nunez is likely to be the key man for the visitors, with the forward netting an impressive hat-trick at the weekend. Liverpool have been going through the gears in the last couple of minutes, and they're rewarded with a corner from the left. Gilberto has certainly had a lot to deal with so far, while Luis Diaz hasn't seen much of the ball on the right. It ends up with Everton in the right half space, just outside the area. 31st min: The Liverpool pressure continues to mount, with a series of corners. It looks set for the Colombian to tap in, but Grimaldo slides in just in time, to take the ball off the attacker's foot. The assistant's flag is up, and VAR shows the decision to be correct. 46th min: A Keita shot from outside the arrow fizzes just wide of the post, he hit across the ball slightly as a Jota cross was cleared to him. 25th min: Darwin Nunez has the ball in the back of the net, running into space behind Liverpool's defence before chipping Alisson in no man's land. Nelson Verissimo's side are way off the pace in the league and were knocked out of both domestic cups by Porto and Sporting CP, meaning they have little left to play for other than going as far in Europe as they can. Jurgen Klopp's side were in control for the first half in Lisbon during the first leg of the quarter-final, with goals from Ibrahima Konate and Sadio Mane no less than they deserved. Liverpool have been comfortable enough in the first five minutes of this half.

Benfica content to play on the break again. Few familiar names on the Benfica teamsheet to Premier League fans, I don’t mean Everton. Otamendi and Vertonghen are the centre-backs again, while former West Ham loan Joao Mario is on the bench. Not a blistering start from Liverpool but they don’t really need to fly out the traps here. Anyway, stretcher is waiting for the Benfica keeper just in case it’s needed. It beats the keeper Vlachodimos and Liverpool have the lead and surely they are heading to the semi-finals now. The Portuguese had tried to round the goalkeeper after a 1-2 with Diaz. Moments earlier he had headed home Gomez’s cross but was penalised for a push. Really good strike from Everton on the counter-attack. Ibrahima Konate opens the scoring for Liverpool with a header from Tsimikas' corner. Break in play as Vlachodimos receives treatment after taking Jota’s knee to the head. Firmino plays it across the face for a tap-in for Diaz but Grimaldo gets back and concedes a corner with a great sliding clearance. Liverpool have just nearly made it 2-0 through Firmino. Great block from Vertonghen to knock it onto the roof of the net after Diaz kept it alive. Expect there to be a raft of changes from Klopp, particularly around the hour-mark.

Six things seen in Liverpool vs Benfica as Roberto Firmino doubles ... (Liverpool.com)

Jürgen Klopp will have been broadly satisfied as Liverpool ultimately secured fairly comfortable progress against Benfica. This is what we spotted.

The most selected player in the Klopp era, Firmino has gradually slipped down the pecking order, but his performance here was a reminder of the astonishing depth available to the manager. He has switched between the left and right pretty freely in his career to date, an invaluable quality for any manager to call upon. Benfica were caught offside four times in the first half alone. The only man who could beat the trap in the first period was James Milner, whose accidental pass let Benfica in behind for their equaliser. One of the many changes from the Manchester City game, Luis Díaz was restored to the Liverpool line-up. Admittedly, both goals came from situations where even Firmino had no choice but to pull the trigger, but he showed typically astute movement and anticipation to get on the end of both. “We must continue to support [those who lost loved ones] and observe this anniversary in a manner which honours the memory of those we lost.

Liverpool have found new Virgil van Dijk as FSG transfer strategy ... (Liverpool.com)

Liverpool may have very well found Virgil van Dijk's successor against Benfica, and it has once again proved FSG's carefully calculated transfer strategy ...

But in the end, FSG have been vindicated in their decision to wait and hold out for Konaté. The Reds' signing from RB Leipzig has taken to Anfield like a duck to water, and already in his short time at the club, he has proven FSG were right to look at the bigger picture. Konaté has the potential not only to succeed Van Dijk, but to be at Liverpool for the next decade or more to come. Such is the nature of goals and such is the nature of football. Last season, FSG came under fire for not recruiting a centre-back in the summer or even in January amid a major injury crisis. While the offside trap ultimately stuttered on multiple occasions, the blame for the three goals shipped lay mostly with the full-backs, with Matip also shouldering a share of the responsibility. If anything, this may have been the French U21 international's best performance yet in a Liverpool shirt.
