There is, however, one place in the country that will escape the clutches of Stage 4 load shedding. “Eskom Group Chief Executive, Andre de Ruyter will hold a Virtual Media Briefing where Eskom’s management team will provide an update on the current system challenges. That has had a devastating impact on the national grid, forcing Eskom to crank up the dial by two whole stages.

'To ensure that we did not put the grid at risk and put SA at risk of a blackout': Rhulani Mathebula – GM, Eskom Generation.

However, our planning norm is 10 000MW, which is the one that is referred to as the best case. Currently, as I’m talking to you, we are sitting with about 5 000 megawatts (MW) that is on planned maintenance, with those units returning actually by the end of this month and the middle of the next month. RHULANI MATHEBULA: We have got a number of units that are planned to return [to service]. Actually, as of today we had planned to return three units, one at Camden, one at Tutuka and one at Arnot. All those machines have been returned. So the ‘best case’ scenario is experiencing 37 days of load shedding in this winter period, with the worst case scenario going up to 101 days. For our listeners who couldn’t listen to the briefing that Eskom held a little earlier – either because of work commitments or because they were at home with no power and couldn’t tune in – please help us understand how we got to this particular point in which we are at Stage 4 of load shedding. However, our service providers have also stepped up and they are assisting to make sure that we recover.

We are currently sitting at stage 4, the load shedding schedule provides for a further reduction in load as low as stage 8, of course we don’t want to go there.” We also rely on our major industrial customers to support us during that time and those customers are very much involved in the planning process, but we are quite a long way away from a total system blackout or a collapse.” “Of course, we need more capacity on the grid as urgently as we can to give us that additional safety margin that we need in order to cater for the unpredictability and unreliability of our generation system.”

As of Wednesday morning, Eskom had lost a unit at Majuba power station due to a boiler tube leak, as well as another unit at Arnot power station which tripped.

“Therefore, we are not particularly concerned about this risk, but it’s something that is always top of mind for the system operator to make sure that every second they are doing what is necessary to maintain balance in the system.” Earlier Eskom’s chief executive for transmission Segomoco Scheepers had said: “As we speak with Stage 4, we are reasonably comfortable that the system is in balance, the recovery plans have been spoken about in terms of the units that are coming back online.” “The units are coming back, we are again putting in every effort that we can, to reduce load shedding as soon as we can.”
