Ward-Prowse single-handedly dragged Southampton back into the game late in the first half, whipping a trademark free-kick through the Brighton wall and past goalkeeper Robert Sanchez after Cucurella had fouled Nathan Tella. Brighton made a lightning start and led with two minutes on the clock through Danny Welbeck, who tapped into an empty net after visiting goalkeeper Fraser Forster fumbled Marc Cucurella's low cross into the box. Oriol Romeu backheeled a ball into the path of Ward-Prowse around 10 minutes into the second period, and the midfielder fired straight into the far corner to bring Southampton level.
James Ward-Prowse scored twice as Southampton came back from two goals down and an injury to Tino Livramento to draw 2-2 at Brighton.
“It was clear they are a little bit struggling mentally and we tried to use this fact and absolutely deserved the equaliser.” Forster superbly denied Welbeck his second from close range before Brighton doubled their advantage in the 44th minute. “It’s super tough for every goalkeeper in the moment; they don’t know what is coming up.” “There is not much more to climb than we had first half. Today we showed a very, very good reaction and it definitely helped that we made it 2-1 before half-time with a beautiful free-kick.” “We saw a very intense game; a very, very horrible start for us with the goal after two minutes, a chance for an equaliser that hits the post, a very, very bad injury and a second goal where we kick it in our own goal,” the manager said.
Player ratings from Brighton vs Southampton in the Premier League.
CM: Oriol Romeu - 6/10 - Sluggish and lost the ball in some bad positions. ST: Che Adams - 7/10 - A few nice moments in Southampton's build-up. ST: Danny Welbeck - 8/10 - In the right place at the right time to score the opener. CM: Enock Mwepu - 7/10 - Easy to watch with the ball at his feet and such a powerful runner. A dreamy striker of the ball and rescued his side here. AM: Leandro Trossard - 8/10 - Buzzed around in a central role and looked menacing, creating big opportunities. LB: Marc Cucurella - 6/10 - Good work down the left led to Welbeck's opener. Good free kick caught out Sanchez to give Southampton a foothold in the game and his second was even better. Made a few parried saves which kept his side in the game. A really awkward and hard to watch performance. A shot cracked with post and bounced agonisingly out of reach for Che Adams, who was sprawling to reach the ball. Did a lot of excellent work that helped the attacking trio ahead thrive.

He was heavily involved for the second goal too, with his hard work and skill down the right opening up play as he found Trossard to deliver the cross. Back in the starting lineup, the Frenchman worked hard and was a threat up front. Returning from illness, he was a constant threat for Brighton, with his trickery and skill. Didn't have too much time on it to be creative, but put in a good shift. The Seagulls made the best possible start, taking the lead inside 90 seconds as Danny Welbeck capitalised on a defensive mix up to poke the ball home from close range. He didn't have too many standout moments, but kept things simple, earning applause from his manager on a number of occasions.

Anthony Dabbundo gives his detailed thoughts, plus his top pick, for Sunday's Premier League match between Brighton and Southampton.
Although I’m not one to look to play Brighton as the favorite, it’s the better side. Southampton went through a similar pattern to its season last year, with an excellent middle portion that ended with the club running out of gas. The Saints will also want to disrupt the Seagulls’ ball-progression patterns and focus on speeding them into mistakes. Brighton then traveled north to play Manchester City to a tie for the first half before running out of gas in a 3-0 defeat. The biggest question has come when the Seagulls are favored and being asked to break down a lower block with incisive attacking play. They have a ton of excellent, technical players with the ball at their feet and don’t get easily overwhelmed by teams who attempt to press them.

Former England and Liverpool striker Michael Owen has his say ahead of Brighton's Premier League showdown with Southampton at the Amex Stadium.

The Austrian may opt for changes at the Amex Stadium after his side slipped to a disappointing 2-0 loss at relegation-threatened Burnley on Thursday.
Here is how Football FanCast expects Southampton to line up today as they travel to Brighton.
The former has been developed into a centre-back this season having notoriously been a right-back but has a bad habit of proving unreliable when handed a run of games, with The Athletic’s Dan Sheldon labelling the £16k-per-week 23-year-old a “weak link” in the defence. The Ghanaian is undoubtedly the Saints’ best defender but had been under par for a handful of games, hence Hasenhuttl proving to the 23-year-old that his place in the side isn’t guaranteed. Having played around with different formations of late, we expect Hasenhuttl to return to his favoured 4-2-2-2 set-up with the use of a back-five offering inconsistent results in the last two matches.
