Stranded on the ground the defender illegally held the ball in his legs, conceding an indirect free-kick from just outside the six-yard box. From the perspective of Sundowns — who would have been crowned champions in low-key circumstances had Royal lost — the title race is as good as over. The clever forward's low shot was cleared past his own goalposts by back-pedalling Usuthu defender Abbubaker Mobara.

Wasteful Royal fail to put AmaZulu to the sword (Premier Soccer League)

Royal AM were let down by some poor finishing as they drew 0-0 with AmaZulu FC in a DStv Premiership match at Chatsworth Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Usuthu did have a rare chance towards the end of the match, but Nyame came out to block Luvuyo Memela's attempt from close range. The lanky forward played a defence-splitting pass for Mokete Mogaila, who placed his effort wide of the target with only Mothwa to beat from inside AmaZulu's box. The draw saw Thwihli Thwahla remain second on the league standings - 12 points behind leaders Mamelodi Sundowns, who have a game in hand.

The game will mark Usuthu's second KwaZulu Natal derby in a week after they downed Maritzburg United 1-0 last week.

We feel that we can beat Royal AM. The commitment from the players is there and the players are willing to work hard for the team,” said Mothwa. At the start of the season, AmaZulu chairman Sandile Zungu indicated that he wants the club to finish in the top four this season. They have home advantage and are also in solid contention to finish second which will grant them the right to play in next season’s Caf Champions League.
