Kevin De Bruyne's superb header has given Manchester City an early lead in this Champions League semi-final first leg.Manchester City: Ederson; Stones, ...

The bookmaker's odds suggest that Manchester City and Liverpool are likely to be the two teams contesting the Champions League final. Manchester City have made four changes from their demolition of Watford at the weekend. As talk rages on about where Mahrez will be playing his football next season, he has been given the trust of his manager this evening. This evening's clash has all the hallmarks of a classic Champions League clash. Success is what every footballer craves as a youngster and then when they get their break at the top level. It is unlikely the England regular would have got a look in had Cancelo not been suspended but such is the scenario that he and Guardiola find themselves in. Rematch.— OptaJoe (@OptaJoe) April 26, 2022 We are just 20 minutes away from kick off in the first of the two Champions League semi finals. We are just moments away from kick off in Manchester as the two teams make their way out onto the Etihad pitch. That is exactly what Guardiola would have wanted as Mahrez clips a perfect cross into the Real Madrid penalty area where De Bruyne is on hand to bravely nod beyond Thibaut Courtois. Although, they do seem relatively happy to let City control the ball in rather ineffective areas. City have doubled their lead and De Bruyne is once again at the heart of it.

Man City host European heavyweights Real Madrid in the first leg of their Champions League semifinal. City are looking for their first major European trophy ...

Paramount+ will stream the match in English. Casemiro was in the same position, but is only judged fit enough to make the bench. The trio that have seen Madrid to European success in the past has been broken up by the change, but it remains to be seen whether Pep Guardiola can find a way to take advantage. 20 mins from kickoff: With his history in this competition, you'd think that Karim Benzema will have a large part to play in this tie. Valverde has done a good job filling in gaps in the defensive line. He passes the ball across goal for a teammate to get a touch, but Carvajal is in position to clear. It comes to him quickly, and he manages to divert the ball towards the centre of goal, but Carvajal has got himself in the way, and City can't convert. Mahrez showed quick feet in the area to dance through the Madrid defenders, but his shot is just wide of the post. Play pauses as Zinchenko is tripped, but the referee plays advantage, and Bernardo Silva is the quickest thinker in Manchester! He latches onto the loose ball and flashes a shot past Courtois, at the 'keeper's near post. A ball in from the right takes a little flick from Sterling, who came on for Jesus, and Dias stretches for it at the far post. When his side have been in this position in the past, Guardiola has perhaps made one change too many. Karim Benzema has already shown his class in this competition, and his performance against Paris Saint-Germain was eye-catching.

Guardiola press conference LIVE Man City vs Real Madrid team news (Manchester Evening News)

Manchester City host Real Madrid in the Champions League semi-final first leg at the Etihad, with three injury concerns.

You want to reach the final, like Liverpool and Villarreal, but never underestimate what we have done to be here. For us always I have the feeling in Barcelona and Bayern, you start to expect to be there. At this period it would be selfish to speak of any contract situation, we'll see where we are at the end of the season. Now I feel how nice it is to be there with the best teams in Europe. Try to be ourselves, do two exceptional games to reach the final. It's a special competition, every young player wants to be here. If we have to compete with their history, we don't have any chance. The two games against Sporting, first game against Atletico we played to not concede. Madrid don't buy players without the quality to play in the team. You have to show it in trianing. Up to you, not a problem, will be other players in future and I try to do it again. You're young and the pressure in these teams to win and win. So demanding, you have to be so precise.

Man City vs. Real Madrid: De Bruyne's fastest Champions League ... (ESPN)

It was a wild Champions League semifinal, but Man City leave Etihad Stadium with the upper hand over Real Madrid. Here are the key talking points.

The one thing City couldn't control was Benzema's brilliance. The 37-year-old started well -- it was his cross which set up Foden's header -- but struggled more as the game wore on. While other world-class midfielders like Luka Modric and Toni Kroos took a while to find their rhythm, De Bruyne scored after just 90 seconds and set up Jesus 10 minutes later. Even after Foden had scored City's third, Aymeric passed up another clear opportunity from Oleksandr Zinchenko's cross. Phil Foden made it 3-1 after 53 minutes, only for Vinicius Junior to hit back again two minutes later. Here are three thoughts on the game.

Since riding the rollercoaster to victory against holders Chelsea, Madrid have moved within a point of becoming domestic champions and now face a fresh English challenge in what is their record 31st semi-final in this competition. Real Madrid could not live with City's fierce pressing on their last visit to east Manchester in August 2020, when Gabriel Jesus scored one and laid on another in a 2-1 last-16 second-leg victory. Losing finalists last season, City are eager to make amends, but the 13-time European champions are a huge obstacle in their path.

Struggled in midfield during the first 45 although won the ball with a well-timed sliding tackle which led to Benzema's first. Should have done more to stop Mahrez from cutting inside and assisting City's opener in a quiet first-half performance. However, assisted Benzema's first-half volley with an awkward cross and also played a good pass into Vinicius Junior which allowed him to dummy the ball past Fernandinho and burst through for Real's second. Played a dreadful short corner with Carvajal during a poor first-half display as the pace of the game looked too much for him. Almost made a costly error in first-half injury time when he gave the ball away in his own half and was let off again at the start of the second when he missed a clearance, allowing Mahrez in on goal. Back in the team following injury which had kept him out since the first leg of the quarter-finals and looked rusty. Nearly pulled one back in the first half with a difficult header that went narrowly wide. Showed impressive alertness to continue playing in the build-up to his goal and took the chance in clinical fashion, blasting past Courtois at his near post. Allowed too much space in behind Eder Militao for De Bruyne to run in and head home City's first. From there, he tormented Real Madrid. Set up City's second goal with a fine, diagonal cross for Jesus and created a succession of other chances for his team-mates. Produced some dazzling moments of skill on City's left, particularly in the first half. Had difficult moments against Benzema and guilty of conceding the penalty for Madrid's third with a needless handball.
