I think just because there is some history to be celebrated, doesn’t mean that current politicians are let off the hook, that our government can simply say look at how far we have come, look at these symbolic moments of freedom and triumph and victory and let it be top of mind. There are people that go to universities, they get degrees and when they come back they come back to the same Kasi.” “We cannot only celebrate the past successes as though that will be the saving grace of this particular administration or government or this political climate. This is not freedom to us.” Despite this gain, some South Africans say this promise is in stark contrast to their realities. The fight for liberation and an equal South Africa culminated into a single day that would change the trajectory for the country.
This week we mark a milestone in the commemoration of 28 years since our liberation from the clutches of an illegitimate administration in terms of whose.
That people have been crammed into tiny multiple-story flats is itself an indictment on us because we have not covered ourselves in glory when it comes to addressing apartheid’s spatial planning and on land agrarian reform. As we celebrate Freedom Day and the progress registered since our breakthrough, let us also acknowledge our failures. Many of the 58 964 investigations that we have finalised out of the 60 962 the public entrusted us with since I assumed office in October 2016 bear testimony to this reality. Though we have made findings and taken remedial action in her favour, the investigation report is cold comfort for her. Our recent systemic investigation into conditions 16 public health care facilities in Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, the Eastern Cape, Limpopo and Mpumalanga provinces are yet another example. Our lifelong aspirations as an oppressed people were about to be realised and to say we were optimistic for the future would be to put it mildly. And so, by the time we voted in our thousands on April 27, 1994, we already knew where we stood as a country when it came to the rule of law, human rights and governance. She has remained ensnared in that place when most people have long crossed over into the dispensation of equal opportunity, improved quality of life and a freed potential of each person. This should be in addition to a written apology. Some within this group find themselves trapped in such undesirable conditions as a direct result of maladministration. Dependency on grants was especially high the Eastern Cape and Limpopo. Some 14.1 percent of households used pit latrines which did not have a ventilation pipe.
Freedom Day needs to be used by South Africans to renew their commitment to correcting their country's faults.
Of critical importance for the meaningfulness of the day are the democratic dividends which should spawn a good society. The process of establishing a democratic system in South Africa involved establishing political and governance systems based on the supremacy of the constitution and the rule of law, where equality became one of the organising principles of the post-apartheid society. It is because of this that Freedom Day is becoming increasingly derided by many in the cynicism which has percolated into a grievance. And the days that mark its anniversary often create incendiary moments where the grimace of discontent – particularly on the faces of those who are in the margins of society – finds expression. Surging socioeconomic disparities affront the very notion of a good society. In other words, is this day still worthy of commemoration?

We have to renew our minds to the possibilities of change that come with forgiveness and understanding. We must face our pain, collectively, head on, as painful as it is and allow light to come in. It made me realise that much of society in South Africa had not healed. It made me realise that South Africa is in parts a deeply traumatized society. At the time, I was aware I had to personally walk through my pain, and not try to avoid it. It marks the end of 342 years of colonialism, segregation and apartheid white minority rule.

That is why this is not the time to mourn the loss of the dream of freedom, but to act and organise for its preservation. This is not a job to be left for the people and organisations you consider to be activists – the challenge is too big even for them – but for every person in society who says they subscribe to life, dignity and human rights. With the indispensable help of civil society mobilisation to get people to vote, democracy held the line against right-wing populist parties in Slovenia and France on Monday. But, as we are seeing in the US, without addressing inequality and its drivers – including the climate crisis – this is just a stay of execution. The juxtaposition between the way the path is cleared for Elon Musk to buy Twitter and the treatment of Julian Assange and Edward Snowden could not be greater. The United Nations (UN) was far from perfect but today, in response to crises, multilateralism is being replaced with unilateralism; the UN is being downgraded and bypassed. Freedom is not just something we demand only of the government, but also something we must actively create within and around ourselves.

Analysis - South Africans have learnt that democracy isn't simply a destination that they reached with the formal end of apartheid on 27 April 1994.
This year, the African National Congress is scheduled to elect both new provincial and national leadership. That is, the Bill of Rights of the Constitution became supreme. The other reason that these organisations, and approaches, have the potential to keep democracy alive in South Africa is that they're emboldened by the arrangement set up in 1994. But in South Africa, this is unlikely to happen in the foreseeable future. Afriforum is a civil rights organisation that "mobilises Afrikaners, Afrikaans-speaking people and other minority groups in South Africa and protects their rights".
