Silverton Siege Review: Guns, Contrived Emotions and a Tense ... (Leisurebyte)

The movie makes a valiant attempt to give a balanced view of things: it shows us both sides, as it were. Directed by Mandla Walter Dube, the movie runs for ...

The situation is presented in a way that almost disowns its revolutionary roots: the ANC is portrayed as an organisation of angry young men who are not necessarily idealistic and rather resentful of their former white comrades in arms from their days in MK. The reason they give for hijacking this bank is to draw attention to the brutality of the apartheid regime – so they say. This is a kind of thing that can happen in action thrillers, but Silverton Siege is a little too chaotic and heavy-handed in the way it tells its story. There was the possibility that their lives might be saved by some kind of negotiation or compromise, but this would inevitably mean that the group’s leader would be arrested, and the others would probably be killed. This film shows how the activists were caught in a kind of pincer movement. It is inspired by one of the most sensational events in anti-apartheid history: the Silverton siege in 1980. Silverton Siege is set in the 1980s and has a very lukewarm approach to its subject matter, which will certainly disappoint those who are interested to find out more about this fascinating moment in South African political history.

It is one of the things I was very grateful for.” Also, she gives one of the greatest performances we have seen in a South African movie and I would argue, one of the greatest physical actions we have seen. “He summed up the film in that breath. She was the heart and soul of the production. It’s a very loaded statement when you look at the situation in context. “MK was started by a white Russian man, Joe Slovo. There were people of different races in the struggle. Then I remembered I saw in his eyes what he was doing. Erasmus agreed: “I think she is phenomenal. “It’s about the fact that we can’t ignore injustice. That was the first thing that leapt out at me even though I had reservations about the character itself. And that is why I feel that this movie, which is based on a true-life event, is Dube’s magnum opus. You ache for these characters, who are in a desperate situation.

'Silverton Siege' Ending, Explained - Is It Based On A True Story ... (Digital Mafia Talkies)

Inspired by real events, Mandla Dube's Netflix film, "Silverton Siege," constantly asks the question, "What is the price of freedom?" The answer is simple ...

Calvin and Terra died that day, but their revolution lived on and sparked a national movement that finally became the Free Nelson Mandela Campaign, who was later released on February 11, just three weeks after the siege of Silverton. Like Calvin, even Langerman understood the price of freedom in the end, which was “everything.” Calvin was ready to sacrifice his life for the movement so that generations to come would live in freedom and wouldn’t be discriminated against on the basis of their skin color. It is the men and their ideologies that promote hatred among men, and in the “Silverton Siege,” the Brigadier was the exact personification of that hatred. It was Aldo Erasmus, Calvin’s close friend and comrade, who sold them out to Captain Langerman, and he had his own personal reasons for betraying his friends and the movement. In a violent chase, Calvin loses one of his comrades, named Masego, and while running from the police, they take shelter in a South African bank named Volkskas. At gunpoint, Calvin, Terra, and Aldo take hostages and plan a way out, while in the meantime, they try to discover who snitched about them and reveal their plan to Captain Langerman, which was why he was already waiting for them at the Seahorse oil depot. From an African American hostage named Cornelius Washington, Calvin gets the idea of giving their voice to the freedom of Nelson Mandela, and thus, without any further ado, Calvin and his comrades demand the impossible.

While it is disappointing to see these tropes in an African movie, it’s important to add that these few flaws do very little to distract you from the point of the movie. This movie makes the case for the need for more authentic movies told by the owners of the stories. Justin Strydom is extremely good at playing the role of the racist white cop that you find yourself hating whenever the camera pans to him. As you watch on, the movie delves into the backgrounds and motivations of the characters. Noxolo is believable as a vengeful, wild card Terra who is ready to shed blood for the cause at the slightest provocation. On 25 January 1980, three armed activists of the ANC’s uMkhonto we Sizwe (“spear of the nation”) wing walked into a bank in Silverton, Pretoria and changed the course of history forever.

However, towards the end, the movie heads into the realm of fiction, as it does not try too hard to adhere to history. The movie adheres to most of the specifics of the incident but tweaks the names a little bit. In the process, the MK liberationists held 25 civilian hostages on the ground floor of the bank and went off with their demands. The Cadres then changed the route and went into a branch of Volkskas Bank. Therefore, the treatment and the story come off as refreshing, although the movie conceals several heist movie and Blaxploitation genre tropes. While the journey is dynamic and cerebral, you must wonder how much of the story is borrowed from reality.

What is Silverton Siege on Netflix about? (Netflix Life)

Inspired by true events, Silverton Siege depicts the tense 1990 showdown between South African freedom fighters and police officers. Details here.

The Trio are all in agreement that someone, perhaps one of them, is an “Impimpi“ – a sell-out and police spy. Jiva! actress Noxolo Dlamini stars as Mbali Terra in the new release. However, we believe most of the hype hails from the small moments of hair-raising action viewers saw in the teaser because now, audiences are beginning to see more.

In a statement, Dube, states: “Silverton Siege is my strongest work thus far, the hope is that filmmakers from Africa are given more opportunities at decolonising the narrative of who we are. It’s also especially important to appreciate this – particularly at a time when politicians talk of the year of Charlotte Maxeke, while the ANC Women’s League is recently disbanded. The 1980 Silverton siege is documented as a six-hour showdown between police, negotiators, hostages and the trio, resulting in an inevitable turn of events on that fateful day, 25 January. The inclusion of Dlamini’s character, Mbali “Terra” Mabunda is where one understands the objective of creative licence to seed inspiration, reflect and change thinking. Besides, what’s the point of introducing a monumental history lesson with a powerful message and not envelope it in a good story? Not just for aesthetics but he truly delivered what I believe is one of the best, most energising performances in a struggle movie.
