3rd min: James Milner has to clear a loose ball in his own penalty area early on, and it's Newcastle who have the better of the opening couple of minutes. They've done a good job of making Liverpool uncomfortable when playing out the back, but Liverpool have shown the ability to in behind the press already. The Sporting News is here to bring you live updates from Newcastle vs. Joelinton has done well in midfield for the Magpies. He may continue there, with Almiron and Saint-Maximin as a makeshift front two, or he may be pushed through the middle. 2 hours to KO: Liverpool are in place for Saturday's early kick off, and so are we. 5 mins to KO: The stadium is filling up quickly now, with the last empty seats being taken. Newcastle have responded to the atmosphere well in the last couple of minutes. Newcastle don't like it, but Keita has the ball in the back of the net. The atmosphere is excellent. Krafth manages to divert the ball away, a crucial intervention, before the flag goes up. The visitors have managed to play the game at the tempo they want. He keeps his cool, sidestepping the onrushing Dubravka, and firing home past a crowd of Newcastle bodies on the line.

Liverpool team vs Newcastle predicted as Naby Keïta and Diogo ... (Liverpool.com)

Liverpool take on Newcastle United in the Premier League later today. Here, three of our writers select the starting XIs we would like Jürgen Klopp to ...

Naby Keïta comes in with hopes of repeating his display away at Benfica, in a match that Liverpool should be able to control for the most part. Mané's take on the central role adds a nice blend between Jota and Firmino, and that's important for games where the opponent could go either way with their approach. Diogo Jota deserves to start and Liverpool may need his poaching ability to breakdown this Newcastle side. Luis Díaz has been in great form and deserves a start in the league with his ability to stretch Newcastle's defences. I would expect few changes to be made for this game. Joël Matip will come back into the team and I'm tempted to bring Kostas Tsimikas in as well.

Hello, and welcome to The Athletic's coverage of Newcastle United's Premier League clash with Liverpool. Jurgen Klopp's side need a win if they are to keep ...

There has been a few misplaced passes from the visitors as the Magpies have been relentless with their press. The Reds seem to have taken a lot of confidence from that opening goal. 25' Newcastle 0-1 Liverpool Targett appears to catch the winger but he stays on his feet and tries to cut the ball back before it is intercepted. 28' Newcastle 0-1 Liverpool 32' Newcastle 0-1 Liverpool 36' Newcastle 0-1 Liverpool 37' Newcastle 0-1 Liverpool Milner then fires wide from distance from corner. Jurgen Klopp's side took a deserved lead through a bit of brilliance when Naby Keita showed great footwork to create space and score into the empty net. #NUFClacking a bit of a focal point & can't get Saint-Maximin in the game enough. Can they end Newcastle's 11-game unbeaten run at St. James' Park?

Newcastle vs Liverpool: Player ratings, analysis and reaction as ... (iNews)

Jurgen Klopp's decision to make five changes was vindicated as Naby Keita's first-half finish sent Liverpool to the top of the Premier League.

“If it is a positive sign for the boys, then great, but I don’t think this will be the one decisive thing for whatever decision they have to make. “It was difficult, the only plan they had obviously was long balls to our right side… “I thought Joe Gomez was different class and like Milly (James Milner) said we need everyone in the squad. Sandwiched between those two chances was a rare Newcastle effort on target, when Alisson denied his Brazilian compatriot and Newcastle’s man of the moment Bruno Guimaraes with a comfortable save down to his right. Much to Klopp’s frustration, Liverpool continued to be wasteful in front of goal, with Jota firing straight at Dubravka when a calmer head was required. At the other end, Jota drew a spectacular stop from Dubravka with a powerful header that is quickly becoming his signature move.

We simulated Newcastle v Liverpool to get a score prediction with ... (Liverpool Echo)

Liverpool travel to St. James' Park to face Newcastle United today in the Premier League - so we simulated the game to get a pre-match score prediction.

The Magpies came out the second-half looking much better as they created a few chances, but Liverpool managed to grab a sixth with 15 minutes remaining. Liverpool were in full control as Eddie Howe's side struggled to leave their half, and just before the break, Fabinho made it 5-0 to the Reds. Some quick passing play outside the box saw Newcastle press high and create a pocket of space for Henderson to run into. The Reds were in full control, and their lead was extended again 18 minutes in as Salah grabbed his second of the game. Sadio Mane cut inside from the left after beating his man with ease, and as the Senegalese winger approached the box, a hole opened in the Magpies defence. Liverpool took the lead just five minutes into the clash, with Naby Keita finding the net after a scrappy bit of play inside the box.

Sadio Mane squandered another promising Liverpool attack in the 60th minute, pushing his effort wide of the goal after a terrific run from Joe Gomez down the right wing. The midfielder finished off a slick move on 19 minutes, which started with a James Milner challenge on Fabian Schar that Newcastle thought was a foul. Despite Liverpool's dominance, Newcastle looked spritely when they had the ball, and came close to finding an equaliser in the 87th minute when Guimaraes found space on the edge of the box and fired a low shot, but Alisson covered it well and Liverpool held on to secure the three points.

Keita takes Liverpool top with win at Newcastle (Independent Online)

Liverpool moved back to the top of the Premier League table on Saturday after a close win over Newcastle United at St. James' Park.

The German used his considerable quality off the bench sending on Salah, Fabinho and Thiago were introduced in the final quarter in a bid to seal the points. Dubravka went on to keep Newcastle in the game as the visitors should have avoided a nervy finale. Three of those brought back into the team had a major role to play in the only goal as James Milner snapped into a tackle on Fabian Schar.

Liverpool beat Newcastle: Five things we learned as Reds pile ... (Daily Express)

LIVERPOOL beat Newcastle 1-0 at St James' Park to pile the pressure on Manchester City.

The midfielder trio of Henderson, Milner and Keita proved to be the difference for much of the contest as Liverpool's tweaked forward line failed to make their mark. In Thiago's absence, the Liverpool skipper adopted the role of the Reds' midfield metronome and proved himself to be a calm and composed presence, who dictated play throughout. With the big games coming thick and fast, Klopp opted to rest Salah on Saturday, deploying a front three of Sadio Mane, Luis Diaz and Jota instead. The next two rounds of matches will also see Liverpool play first and that may well prove to be the difference in determining where the Premier League title ends up. Liverpool ground out a hard-fought 1-0 win over Newcastle at St James' Park on Saturday to leapfrog Manchester City atop the Premier League standings and pile pressure on their title rivals. This weekend, it was the Reds who had the opportunity to pile on the pressure by leapfrogging their title rivals with a win over Newcastle. And that's exactly what they did.
