To come through those games without their two star players, the rest of the squad will feel a million dollars, and you've rested your two best players." "I just thought because he's played Salah in every game, the game that he leaves Salah out in, I thought would be a risk because it tells the rest of the players something. "We had it in the Champions League final, where we had two subs come off the bench and win it for us. "It's the first time Jurgen Klopp's left Mo Salah out in what feels like an absolute age, but he must have felt that was a game that he could leave him out in. And so to keep them included to make them feel part of it, get them on the pitch if you can, even it's for 10 or 15 minutes at the end. Liverpool did very well to come back in and then there were hugs at the end and it's a very pleasant, respectful run-in.

Strictly speaking, of course, Guardiola is right: nothing changes in terms of what Manchester City (or Liverpool) have to do. The smart money is on both sides winning all of their four remaining fixtures. "We have been in this position many times in the past and now in the present, so it is not new," Guardiola added. Liverpool have Tottenham (H), Aston Villa, Southampton (both away) and Wolves (H) left still to play. They have the better squad, but with four games left, that will likely only have a minimal impact, unless a key man like Kevin de Bruyne was to sustain an injury. That means that the two teams have roughly equally difficult remaining fixtures.

Man City have a crucial second summer transfer priority to give Pep ... (Manchester Evening News)

Manchester City have a few transfer issues this summer, but signing a central midfielder must become an absolute priority.

But Gundogan is part of a host of City players whose contracts expire next summer and there have been no reports of an extension yet. Very rarely has someone come into City and hit the ground running in attacking areas during his reign. Maybe the most efficient part of Pep Guardiola’s marvellous City machine is the midfield trio.

Erling Haaland to Man City transfer 'guaranteed' after Pep Guardiola ... (Daily Express)

PEP GUARDIOLA is supposedly ready to commit his future to Manchester City, just days after Jurgen Klopp did the same at Liverpool.

There is still a hint of mystery about his prospects given that City have played without an orthodox striker, to great effect, for most of the last two seasons. Meanwhile, Klopp claimed: "[Man City] are the best team in the world, but they are only one point ahead of us. Guardiola's agreement will keep him at the Etihad until 2025, with the option to extend for a further year. Manchester City and Real Madrid are the last two standing in pursuit of the Norwegian, and Los Blancos appear to be falling behind. The legendary coach has already won three Premier League titles and four domestic cups since taking the reins in 2016. But fierce rival Jurgen Klopp signed an extension with Liverpool earlier this week, which seems to have spurred the Sky Blues boss into action.

Manchester City moved back to the Premier League table with a 4-0 win over Leeds United on Saturday.

They're going to need to find someone to do a good job for Fernandinho, just because he's been pivotal in City's success." Rodri is Guardiola's first choice defensive-midfielder, but Fernandinho, certainly in recent years, has acted as the perfect back-up option. Despite starting last Saturday's 5-1 triumph over Watford, it was just Fenrnainho's second appearance in City's last nine Premier League games.

Guardiola's side won 4-0 at Leeds on Saturday to regain top spot, which the Reds had taken up earlier in the day with victory at Newcastle.

We could have scored more goals and they could have scored some at the end. “They play before; they are going to win all their games. “They surprised us a little bit,” Guardiola said.

“But I’m pretty sure because when I started to see him in the academy at 15-16 he played the position of Kevin and he played really good. It’s a lot and it’s the only chance we have to go through. With time he will be more capable of playing in the positions in the middle. Guardiola will unleash Foden in tandem with De Bruyne against Real and says accommodating the England star in his attack is easy because he can play anywhere. He said: “Responsibility for him is not a problem and going on bigger stages in bigger scenarios in bigger games, he has not a problem. The 21-year-old, who now has 13 goals and nine assists for City, took over set-piece duties in the absence of De Bruyne and Guardiola claimed he relishes this responsibility.

Pep Guardiola outlines Phil Foden path to replacing David Silva and ... (Manchester Evening News)

Manchester City manager hands the 21-year-old the Kevin De Bruyne role in 4-0 win over Leeds but says there is work to be done.

“I always talk about David Silva, sometimes he slowed the rhythm to increase the rhythm and Phil's rhythm is always high. Put the ball in the positions where it can be dangerous.” The “pausa” is a Spanish term for the ability of slowing down or stopping the game to draw an opponent before instantly speeding it up again, a skill of which Silva was the master. “I think he can play in all five positions up front - wingers on both sides, striker and attacking midfielder in the pockets. Now he has the energy of youth and maybe winger suits him better a little bit right now.” Foden then conjured a slick pass to free Gabriel Jesus for goal number three to end any doubts about the result, another glimpse of a future where he orchestrates play from a central role.

We have scored a lot of goals since our FA Cup defeat to Liverpool - three goals, five goals, four goals, four goals again — it is a lot and it is the only chance that we have to go through. But the sight of Jack Grealish winning headers in his own box, and Raheem Sterling scampering back to win possession, typified the collective effort. John Stones and Kyle Walker are doubts for the Real Madrid second leg after missing the Leeds game, while Guardiola said that Nathan Ake felt discomfort in his ankle at the weekend but played through it.

Goals, goals, goals: City's free-scoring weekend in review (Manchester City FC)

Four games, four wins, 31 goals and two trophy lifts: it has been a truly incredible weekend of football for Manchester City.

“It was my day and I just have to keep going. Following the game, City’s four-goal heroine reflected: “To get four is an unbelievable feeling. It meant City moved back above Liverpool to the Premier League summit with just four games remaining and have now kept five successive clean sheets on the road in the English top flight, our best run in the competition to date. Gabriel Jesus added a third with his sixth goal in the space of a week, before Fernandinho marked his 260th Premier League appearance – a new record for a Brazilian – with a thunderous late strike. He said: “It was a great way for the lads to celebrate, it was nice to win it and get the trophy on home soil rather than being away, so it's been a great day for us. City had already sealed successive PL2 titles following a 3-1 win at Leeds in our penultimate match of the season but rounded off the campaign with an emphatic display.

Guardiola: Foden on the right path to regular central role (Manchester City FC)

Pep Guardiola believes Phil Foden's continued development will soon see him capable of playing through the middle on a more regular basis.

“Its three weeks, maybe four to the end of the season. He can do it no problem, it’s just a question of time.” “The players know we have five games, maybe six if we win on Wednesday and if we win all of them we will be champions of the Premier League and in the final of the Champions League. He said: “For Phil, responsibility is not a problem. And while Guardiola is hopeful that the Dutch international’s discomfort will not rule him out of Wednesday’s Champions League showdown in Madrid, he explained that a decision on the fitness of Stones and Walker would be made in the coming days. “In the Academy when I started to see him at 16/17-years-old when I arrived here, he played in a position like Kevin ( De Bruyne) and wow, he played really good but all the actions are so, so quick.

Sources close to The Sun have revealed that Haaland's decision to join City over Real Madrid will serve as the 'final piece of the jigsaw' for Guardiola, who could claim his fourth league title in six seasons since his arrival to England in the summer of 2016. According to the latest information of Phil Thomas of The Sun, the Catalan has agreed in principle a two-year contract renewal at the Etihad Stadium, that will see the 51-year-old extend his tenure at Manchester City till at least 2025 - with the option of an additional year. In addition, it has been the belief amongst a few quarters that the signing of Erling Haaland from Borussia Dortmund could tempt Guardiola into committing his long-term future to the Premier League champions, who have operated without a natural striker since the start of the campaign.
