A gloomy May Day awaits Nigerian workers (The Conversation Africa)

With a monthly minimum wage of 30000 Naira (US$72), the average Nigerian worker is groaning under the weight of the rising cost of living.

To ease food supply constraints and ultimately reduce the cost of food in Nigeria, government should focus on boosting the productive capacities of small-scale farmers. Perhaps the greatest boost to food production in India is the country’s extremely cheap and extensive transportation network. The fact that Nigerian workers have neither embarked on food riots, nor staged mass demonstrations to protest the unbearable increases in food prices, implies they must have found ways of coping with food inflation. Because of easy access to inexpensive transportation, farmers can bring their products to the open market daily. The rising cost of living has left Nigerian workers with a stark choice. The other three high spenders on food are Kenya (46.7%), Cameroon (45.6%), and Algeria (42.5%). This Hobbesian choice is worse for a one-income household with multiple people, where the minimum monthly wage has to be spread across members of the household. The war in Ukraine has added further upward pressure on commodity and fuel prices. Food prices contributed about 60 percent to Nigeria’s inflation in 2021. Soaring food prices are the major cause. This has been made worse by the rising cost of living. In less than 15 minutes, you would find that you’ve spent at least 10,000 Naira (or US$24 at the official exchange rate of US$1 = 416 Naira).

May 1, International Workers' Day: A brief history of resistance (FRANCE 24)

The protests are expected to be bigger and angrier than usual on Sunday as a cost-of-living crisis sweeps through France and beyond. The US labour movement’s campaign for an eight-hour day burgeoned despite the violent end to the Haymarket movement. In Ancient Rome, May 1 marked the midpoint of the Floralia, a week-long holiday honouring Flora, the Roman goddess of flowers. Another rally was called for May 4 that went on mostly peacefully until the end, when police attempted to disperse the demonstration. Centuries after Christianity became hegemonic across Europe, May Day remained rooted in its pagan origins – a fact recognised by the Puritans who took over England after the end of the Civil War in 1649 and banned May Day festivities such as Morris dancing, garlanding a Maypole with ribbons and crowning a May queen. Against this backdrop, France is expecting the largest and most raucous May Day rallies it has seen in decades.

Considered pro-Russian, Radev went on to say it was a “patriotic duty” not to allow Bulgaria to become involved in the Ukraine war. May Day marches in Cuba are rife with symbolism, a celebration of the 63-year-old Cuban revolution and a government-led rebuke of the Cold War-era embargo imposed on the island by the US. We do not want interference of any kind,” said Juana Garcia, a worker with the Cuban Institute for Philosophy, as she participated in Sunday’s celebrations. All are pressing Macron for policies that put the people first and condemning his plan to raise the retirement age from 62 to 65. Many Chinese marked a quiet May Day this year as the government’s “zero-COVID” approach has restricted travel and enforced lockdowns in multiple cities. The ruling Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna party was forced to call off its May Day rally in view of the ongoing protests. She was replaced by her National Rally party Interim President Jordan Bardella, who said Le Pen was preparing for forthcoming legislative elections. The weekly horoscopes for the week of May 9 will be online next Sunday. The more you say no, the more valuable and meaningful it is when you decide to say yes. You’ve been told before that in order to be respected, you must never show doubt; that in order to advance in the world, you must be commanding, decisive, certain. You might get the results you’re looking for, but the real point is that you’re strengthening your risk-taking muscles again. As you make your plans for the future, operate under the assumption that you can be brave and wild and extraordinary, regardless of whether you feel that way today. This perceptiveness is a gift that has served you well through your life. This means that you don’t always know how to react when you’re struck by a strong and sudden feeling, when, seemingly out of nowhere, your desires are suddenly, perfectly clear. The point is not that there is any one best way to live, only that this week, your job is to be discerning, and to treat your life like the gift that it is. This week, though, consider that you aren’t wrong or inadequate, but rather that some people simply aren’t equipped to appreciate what you do. This week, what matters is that you don’t let that sense of melancholy distract you from the pride you could be experiencing, too. You don’t always have to be deliberate and wise: Occasionally impulsivity, even recklessness, is the best way to get what you need. Whenever you grow or adapt or change your mind, it can also feel strangely like a betrayal of the self.

The long struggle for world peace requires a shift to socialism (James Politi, “ U.S. Dampens Hopes for Diplomatic Solution to Ukraine Crisis with Russia,” February 14, 2022; James Politi, “ U.S. Pours Cold Water on Hopes of Diplomatic Solution in Ukraine,” Financial Times, March 17, 2022). In November 2021, the Biden administration set up a new U.S.-Ukraine Charter on Strategic Partnership, which explicitly reiterated the goal of bringing Ukraine into NATO and set up the terms of further military support for Ukraine that would effectively promote that objective, thereby crossing red lines that Russia had established with respect to its own security. Leo Marx, one of the great cultural historians of the late twentieth century and a Monthly Review author, died on March 10, at age 102. The U.S. proxy war in Ukraine commenced, as indicated, with the 2014 Maidan coup directed from Washington. Eight years of civil war between Kyiv and Donbass followed (briefly interrupted by the Minsk Agreements), resulting initially in the loss of some 14,000 lives. This work, consisting of a number of essays, was a powerful critique of the postmodernism, excessive textualism, and the retreat from revolutionary commitment that had emerged, particularly among the French left. The full-scale war that broke out in late February due to the Russian intervention led to a massive pouring of weapons into Ukraine and the European theater. The U.S./NATO role in this view is one of “providing as much weaponry as possible,” escalating the war rather than seeking diplomatic solutions. As we write these notes in late March 2022, the war in Ukraine continues to escalate, threatening to mutate instantaneously into a global thermonuclear war, which would result in the extermination of virtually the entire population of the earth. To get a firm grasp on the current situation in Ukraine, we must understand the central role that the United States and NATO have played in the conflict from the start, beginning in 2014 with the U.S.-engineered Maidan coup. 2 [2013]: 40; Alex Rubenstein, “ U.S. and NATO Allies Arm Neo-Nazis in Ukraine as Foreign Policy Elites Yearn for Afghan-Style Insurgency,” Internationalist 360°, March 20, 2022).
