Roma 0, Bologna 0: Match Review (Chiesa Di Totti)

Knowing The Special One as we do, he’s not likely to tip his hand, but ending his first season in the capital with a trophy—any trophy—would give his project added momentum as it heads into year two. Not to be outdone, Bologna closed out this match with a reinvigorated approach of their own, nearly stealing a goal in the 88th minute when Lorenzo Di Silvestri rose to meet a lofted cross at the far right post. Roma had another crack at goal in the 90th minute when a Shomurodov header went wide of the mark. It was a difficult effort, particularly with Medel draped all over him, but credit the Bologna veteran for pushing Abraham out of position, to begin with. In the 79th minute, Karsdorp took matters into his own hands, firing a ball to Abraham over the top from 25 yards out. Roma would continue to struggle in the run of play as the minutes ticked away on the first half but made a bit of noise thanks to Carles Pérez, who unleashed a left-footed stinger at Skorupski from 20 yards out. With 15 minutes remaining in the match, it began to look like Roma would rely on their patented last-ditch heroics. seemed to inspire the Giallorossi, who were noticeably more energetic and displayed a greater sense of purpose than at any point in the preceding hour. Despite that overwhelming attacking change, Bologna sprang into action first when Arnautovic was played into the box thanks to a looping right-to-left cross. Roma's first genuine look of the half came via a Jordan Veretout free-kick that, while well-struck, simply didn't dip enough to worry Skorupski, as he watched with delight as Veretout's attempt sailed into stands behind him. With Zaniolo receiving a floated cross at the left edge of the box, he immediately tested Skorupski, forcing a quick save from the former Roma keeper. With the ball bounding around the area, Roma were bailed out thanks to Gianluca Mancini, who reacted quick enough to clear the danger before Bologna could capitalize on the loose ball.

The match also included yet another refereeing controversy as Roma believed they should've been awarded a penalty kick inside the first minute of the game.

The decision was confirmed by VAR match official Marco Piccinini. Roma’s Carles Perez delivered a cross inside the Rossoblu’s penalty area and the ball clearly hit the outstretched arm of Gary Medel. The Polish international made a number of incredible saves throughout the affair, finishing the evening with a total of five.

Roma 0, Bologna 0: Match Highlights (Chiesa Di Totti)

Well, can't win 'em all, right? With a massive second leg clash against Leicester City in the semifinals of the Europa Conference League coming up in ...

While you would’ve preferred that Mourinho had the option to rest his key players for the entirety of the match, it wasn’t to be, as the Special One opted to bring on Lorenzo Pellegrini, Nicola Zalewski, Rick Karsdorp, and Tammy Abraham all in one swoop shortly into the second half. And while Roma certainly looked like the more dangerous of the two sides in the first half, the visitors were not without their chances, with Marko Arnautovic looking particularly threatening and forcing Rui Patricio into several saves. And while the match was about as exciting as a scoreless draw can get, the Giallorossi ultimately did not have enough on the day to beat a pesky Bologna side—one that has somewhat played the role of giant killers in recent weeks, drawing against Milan and Juventus, while also beating reigning champs Inter.

Sinners & Saints: Roma 0, Bologna 0 (Chiesa Di Totti)

Rui Patricio stole the show with multiple key saves to preserve the draw while his attacking teammates struggled to make a dent in the Bologna backline.

Defensively, AMN picked off one pass, completed two tackles, and won five of eight duels, including both aerial contests. While Mourinho likely would have preferred to rest him for the entire match yesterday, Pellegrini made his presence felt in his 31-minute cameo last night. And if he just could have guided his second-half header home, he's the undisputed star of the show. While his opposite number Lukasz Skorupski garnered all the headlines, Patricio was no slouch, making four saves in the box, snaring two high claims, and completing seven of fifteen long balls. Admittedly, we're being somewhat flippant by asking that question since there are nuances and lessons in any match, but at this point in the season, we're not likely to uncover some previously hidden design and/or flaws in José Mourinho's tactical approach, making last night's result as frustrating to write about as it was to watch. After all, what's left to dissect when nothing of consequence really happened in the game, to begin with?
