Friday Samu scored the only goal of the game as Maritzburg United beat Royal AM at the Harry Gwala Stadium, boosting their top flight survival hopes.

Coach Maduka made the first move at half time and brought on Letsoalo and this decision almost paid off as the star forward missed out on a chance to draw his side level in the 57th minute. Mfundo Thikazi was the most lively in the first half as he confused the Maritzburg defence by taking up dangerous positions all over the pitch and almost found the equaliser in the 43rd minute if not for the good work of Maritzburg goalkeeper, Marcel Engelhardt. Durban — Friday Samu scored the only goal of the match as Maritzburg edged Royal AM 1-0 at the Harry Gwala Stadium in Pietermaritzburg on Wednesday night and moved four points clear of the relegation zone.

For Royal it was a second defeat in succession after their Nedbank Cup semifinal loss against Mamelodi Sundowns at the weekend. Royal are still second on the log with 45 points due to their better goal difference to Cape Town City. They will have to get points from their tough three final matches against Orlando Pirates, Lamontville Golden Arrows and already-crowned champions Mamelodi Sundowns to keep their chances of going to the Champions League next season alive. The league defeat leaves them with a lot to do in their remaining three matches if they’re to finish second and qualify for the Caf Champions League in their maiden season in the top-flight.

Photo: Dirk Kotze/BackpagePix With the Fans of Choice back at Harry Gwala to help get the team over the line there was once again an energy to Maritzburg United at home. Maritzburg United striker Friday Samu’s headed goal in the first half of their KwaZulu-Natal derby against Royal AM was enough to bag the Team of Choice all three points. Maritzburg United goalkeeper Marcel Engelhardt wasn’t kept too busy in the first half until Mfundo Thikazi forced a sharp save out of the stopper. After the break, Royal AM finally introduced Letsoalo and he would have the best chance of the game for his side but Engelhardt proved equal to the attempt. Victor Letsoalo was dropped to the bench, and Royal AM recalled the likes of Ndumiso Mabena and Tebogo Potsane. In the latter stages Royal AM poured bodies forward but they could not break down the resolute hosts. John Maduka had rotated his side that lost to Mamelodi Sundowns in the cup over the weekend.
