Babalo Madkizela's message to delegates belonging to his slate has opened a Pandora's box of problems regarding the party's systems.

The two regions are believed to represent part of the core Mabuyane support. The race for a national ANC top-six position will also be contingent on who wins the provincial race, with Ronald Lamola, Paul Mashatile and Enoch Godongwana all shopping to get the backing of the Eastern Cape. The branches which support Mabuyane are said to constitute over 100 voting delegates.
