He has deserved more opportunities, but his United career has been on a downward slope the last three years, unfortunately. Given the injuries and illnesses that continue to plague the United squad, it’s probably a team that almost picks itself again. Brighton have been a welcome addition to the Premier League as well. Lingard and his brother have not helped themselves with some of their social media activity this season and ‘classless’ was the appropriate description for Louie Scott’s Instagram Story. United played well against Brentford, so if there were going to be any changes they would have been at a minimum. Brighton is a great away day: a long journey, a terrific city and an away stand behind one of the goals. Strange but true: United could be two points off fourth by the end of play tonight. A lot of Brighton’s attacks are coming down their right and they look like they fancy their chances of getting some joy against Alex Telles. Rangnick is on the edge of his technical area and has been talking to his left-back. Rangnick has had to tell Telles a couple of times to move higher up the pitch. They outplayed United here last season but somehow lost 3-2 and they have made a similarly purposeful start. It’s been a pretty tepid start from United in the south coast sunshine. Mata started here the last time fans were present and was hooked at half-time.

If they win their last two games they’ll finish with 64 points. Manchester United get the game started and send the ball long over to the right wing. Diogo Dalot adjusts his position well and wins the ball in the air before it can reach the Brighton midfielder. 9 mins: Bruno Fernandes threads a through ball up to Juan Mata who is the most advanced United player. A great Maguire header from a United corner to force a massive save by Sanchez.
The free kick is given, but it's a good way out. A deep free kick is played into Danny Welbeck on the left side of United's box. But no-one is there on the end of it. "I was aware that within four days we had some strikers missing and it might make sense, we were still in three competitions - Champions League, FA Cup and fourth in the league. More possession and more chances, and they just look confident on the ball, trying all sorts of ways through. Cucurella surges through from the left, gets ahead of Elanga and tries to fire another cross in, but it's cleared. I think in possession that was probably one of our best games. Mac Allister plays Trossard in on left, deep, near to the goal line. Welbeck chips the ball in from the right side of United's box after wandering through completely unobstructed. Trossard takes his time, picks out Dunk, who connects, but United scrap to clear their lines. It comes back to Harry and he strikes it towards goal. It's on target, and powerful, but it's straight at Sanchez. Pretty routine stuff.

Live reaction and analysis as Man Utd were humiliated by Brighton in their penultimate match of the Premier League season.
"We waited for it to come together; there were a few moments when I was still shouting. We'll have a nice evening." United have the ball in the net, but the flag is up. The ball is cut back to Marc Cucurella in the box and he fires high into the net to double Brighton's lead. "You're not fit to wear the shirt" is the chant from the away end. Away from home, our form has been excellent, home form not so good. It has held us back in the league. A beautiful counter-attack is finished off by Gross in the box, but United were like statues. United earn a free-kick in another dangerous area, but it comes to nothing as Ronaldo is flagged offside when the ball comes in. They want the match to end, and the season at that. Bruno Fernandes admits Manchester United fans were within their right to chant 'you're not fit to wear the shirt' as their side were humiliated 4-0 by Brighton in the Premier League. 3 mins from kickoff: The teams are lined up in the tunnel now, and they'll be out on the pitch soon. It comes to nothing, but the home side look to be seeing out the half in the ascendancy. 3rd min: It is that back three shape for Brighton, with Cucurella on the left of the three, and Trossard wide on the left. He opts to cut the ball back to the edge of the area, where Jaun Mata's shot is blocked by Caicedo for a corner. He has far too much time in the United area, and he picks out Cucurella making a supporting run. This is a massive capitulation from United. This time Welbeck gets through on the right, again far too easily. United had little in attack, Cristiano Ronaldo firing way off target whenever he found space to receive the ball. The second half continued in that fashion, with Brighton getting the ball into advanced areas but failing to double their advantage. United showed signs of life, at times — Cavani tested Robert Sanchez with an acrobatic effort, and Bruno Fernandes fired a few shots from range throughout the second half — but at no point did it feel like Ralf Rangnick's side were able to match their hosts. Although David de Gea wasn't tested too much in the opening stages, the hosts were getting the ball forward with regularity. Saturday's 4-0 victory was Brighton's biggest in top-flight football and the scoreline did not flatter them at all. Manchester United continue to limp towards the end of a season that is now set to be their worst in the Premier League eras.

Man Utd turned in another yet disgraceful display in their dreadful season, losing 4-0 to Brighton at the Amex Stadium.
United have got issues in both full-back positions but Telles increasingly looks a forlorn hope on the left. They've conceded four or more six times in their last 30 league games and the system and personnel have contributed to what can only be termed a disaster in defence. Erik ten Hag will have to make a judgement call on these players this summer and the next. He contributed to Brighton's first goal with a woeful defensive header. This hammering on the south coast reduced their goal difference to just one. On such a sorrowful day the message belonged to every one of those players.
How the Man Utd players rated as they sank to a dreadful 4-0 defeat to Brighton.
Was often a one-man midfield due to McTominay's struggles but did his utmost to calm proceedings. He has been starting by default for a while and should not start again. Slow in getting down to Moises Caicedo's shot and his afternoon got worse thereafter.
Manchester United interim boss Ralf Rangnick has reflected on our 4-0 defeat against Brighton in the Premier League and admitted the fans deserve an apology ...
It was very, very difficult to stop them in the first half at all and in the second half we took the risk to bring Edi [Cavani] on as a second striker and Fred and went to a 4-4-2. In hindsight it was maybe a little bit of a risk to play a 4-4-2 against them, but we had to try and change the energy. That's why I decided to go with more of a risk and play the 4-4-2 with Edi and Fred as a second six, but the two early goals at 3 and 4-0 after 60/65 minutes was a disaster for us. Until the West Ham game, or even until the Tottenham game we had very in-between and solid performances. To start with we can only apologise to our supporters, it was a terrible performance and a humiliating defeat. The game plan was completely different, we told the players to be as compact as we could possibly be but we couldn’t stop them."
Player ratings: No one had a good day for Manchester United as the Premier League giants officially miss out on the Champions League.
They were bullied, predictable with their decision making, anxious at every turn and just didn't have any kind of direction aside from playing it back to one of their only capable first-teamers. They were defending much more resiliently to avoid further decline and on the odd chance they made something happen in the final third, it was always through some nice, quick passing in and around the box. MF Fred, 3 -- In one of the worst cameos of the season thus far, Fred couldn't keep the ball at his feet and was woeful with his positional play. The Red Devils looked slow from the word go and were made to pay for their poor play as Moises Caicedo put Brighton 1-0 up within 15 minutes. MF Anthony Elanga, 4 -- The youngster had to drop incredibly deep just to get any sniff of the ball, and after failing to deal with the physicality of the opposition, he was subbed off. This was as close to a disaster-class as an 'elite' club can get.
The latest Man Utd team news, transfer gossip, and injury updates following the Premier League clash with Brighton.
Although United failed to cover themselves in glory for the defending leading up to Cucurella's first Brighton goal, it was even worse when Gross made it 3-0. They were magnificent, and some of the football they played was fantastic. The interim boss will leave his managerial position at Manchester United in just a few weeks' time and Erik ten Hag will take over at the club. The Seagulls scored three times inside the opening 15 minutes of the second half to fire themselves into a commanding 4-0 lead, following Moises Caicedo's first-half strike. Slow in getting down to Moises Caicedo's shot and his afternoon got worse thereafter. Mitchell Van der Gaag, currently assistant at Ajax, is set to join Ten Hag in Manchester, however, United are yet to finalise terms on that deal and contracts for other assistant coaches. Manchester United were utterly humiliated as they lost 4-0 to Brighton in the Premier League fixture on Saturday night. It's still possible Rangnick could slam the door shut on his way out. “Because this is what committed footballers do for their club, their fans, for their teammates and their managers. It should be a given, but it's not at Manchester United. It's also understood Cristiano Ronaldo vetoed Conte, which was fed back to the board. I will have a meeting with Manchester United, they're coming especially for him."
