Hamilton said he would wear piercings after two-race exemption set to end before Monaco GP.

Failure to comply could result in fines of up to $265,000 or points on a driver’s licence but Hamilton is intent on continuing the stand-off not least because wearing some metal in the car remains acceptable. After taking sixth place on the grid for Sunday’s race, Hamilton was unequivocal in his determination. On Friday, Hamilton stated he would not remove his piercings, warning he was willing to miss the race over the issue.

Jenson Button sides with FIA over Lewis Hamilton as jewellery ban ... (Daily Express)

LEWIS HAMILTON has previously said he would need to chop off his ears to comply with the FIA's stance on jewellery.

But he took a more serious approach on Friday, claiming the sport had taken a step backwards by enforcing the rule so strictly. Button added that it is a rule not only designed to prevent injury on the race track, but off it too. "I have never worn underpants under my race suit because they are flammable and it has always been in the regulations - don't wear underpants and don't wear piercings or metal on your body. It is a tricky one and it is weird we are talking about it. "Or, it could be if you are taken to the hospital and they have to do an x-ray or an MRI, you can't have metal in your face either. New race director Niels Wittich has taken a stricter position on drivers not being allowed to wear jewellery than predecessor Michael Masi.

His stance is hardly unreasonable but whether it is the hill to die on, so to speak, is open to question. New race director Niels Wittich, who took over from Masi in February, is keen not to turn a blind eye to the anomaly. That is why the rule has long been in the FIA regulations, even if it has not been applied in recent times. Opinion is split on whether the FIA or Hamilton is in the right. I got an exemption here and I will get an exemption for the rest of the year. With the FIA's approval he kept in his one nose piercing – and possibly another stud hidden from view to which he has made intriguing reference – because it cannot be removed without mechanical assistance.

Hamilton 'really happy' with his 'damn good job' (PlanetF1)

Lewis Hamilton has reacted to media criticism of his driving by insisting he had done a “damn good job” in Miami Grand Prix qualifying.

When I came in I didn’t know if I was through and then the same in Q2. That’s like edge of your seat, waiting to hear if you’ve done enough. It was quite difficult with the single laps getting the most out of this car – it’s hard work, this car. “Then once we got into Q3 it was a real battle, a bit of a struggle, but I’m grateful to be sixth.” But I’m grateful to be in amongst the group ahead.” You’re just hoping for the right news. “I’m generally really happy with the job I did today,” said the 37-year-old Briton. “I did the best I could with the car I have – it’s a very hard car to drive.

"That gap is similar to the beginning of the year, I think. So much amazing work is going on in the background and everyone is working so hard. "We'll keep on chipping away, keep working at it. It has massively gone away from us today and I don't really know why. "Yesterday we were in the fight for pole and today we qualified P12 which is the worst qualifying of the year, so it doesn't make a lot of sense." "When we get it into the window it is fast, but I am just a bit disappointed for myself and for the team, I think the potential is there.

Hamilton called Wittich’s crackdown an “unnecessary spat” and said he “couldn’t get any more jewellery on today”, while Vettel said the drivers “should be old enough to make choices also inside the car”. George Russell opens up about Formula 1 driving's physical rigors ... (USA TODAY)

Formula 1 Mercedes driver George Russell spoke with USA TODAY about being teammates with Lewis Hamilton, his brother's influence, ahead of Miami GP.

But when the doors are closed and the cameras are off, he’s just a normal bloke and it sort of brings it all back to reality.” GR: “That’s a question I’ve been asked a few times. That circuit probably contributed to 50% of my darkest days in Formula 1, so obviously to get a relatively good result was nice to get the monkey on my back almost, but I don’t really believe in those sort of coincidences. Whereas you go 30 miles across to Brackley, with a team of 2,000 people, the resource was almost infinite and the innovation is like nothing you’ve seen before and just striving to get better, striving to innovate, striving to win. GR: “The first one I came across was ‘Friends.’ It was always on the television on Comedy Central, I think, in the UK. It must have been on 24/7. They should have rebranded the channel to ‘Friends TV.’ I went through every single episode, probably – I was pretty young, 14 to 16, 17. I was going in there full gas, max attack, and you can’t dwell on the past if you want to move forward. Because you could describe the same problem to 10 different people, and if you don’t describe it the right way, there could be 10 different takes from your limitation. GR: “I’d say my technical knowledge is good enough but the most important thing in Formula 1 is that you have experts in their field and you need to trust those experts to do what they do best. From my side, it’s very important to sort of learn a little bit as you go along the way. As a driver, you need to give them feedback and point them in the right direction and pinpoint accurately what the issue is when describing it. The physical side of it is one side of it. And then it goes through your body, your arm, the steering – the force of the car is trying to move you one way, so (using) core strength. And it was the three of us."
