Was a reduced training session because of quite a long travel and fatigue of travelling. “In the game, again he was very, very good and in general he stepped up this season again in his game. At the same time we missed Jorgi and N’golo, which cost us a little bit. The qualities of him, the personality we have spoken a lot. It’s pretty surprising to be in a situation where we can try it but Mateo wants to try it.

‘Yeah, I think I of course want to be on the pitch, and recently with the limited times that I have had, I have been trying to make as big of an impact as I can. One of the cliches used around the cup is that it gives a chance for ‘unfashionable teams’ to capture the public imagination. In the mid-60s, Liverpool and Chelsea were the most fashionable sides in the game.” It has been a source of frustration, most of all to his father, who took to social media to complain about how his son is not used more. It remains a possibility for Jurgen Klopp’s side, even if Manchester City are closing in on the Premier League title, but Chelsea and Thomas Tuchel will be out for revenge as they aim to win the competition for the ninth time. Kepa Arrizabalaga was the extra-time hero for Chelsea, saving Ryan Hardie’s spot-kick to sneak the Blues through without the need for a shoot-out. Despite his recent lack of form in front of goal, Mohamed Salah is certain to return to the starting XI against his former club, and link up alongside Sadio Mane and Luis Diaz once again. In defence, having scored against Aston Villa last time out, Joel Matip’s experience sees him just edge out Ibrahima Konate to start alongside Virgil van Dijk in the biggest decision Klopp has to make. One of the biggest occasions in the English football calendar, and still one of the best. Down the middle, Sadio Mane is the man in form and surely Liverpool's main threat. So too is the return of Andy Robertson at left-back following a well-earned breather in midweek. The other centre-back slot, though, is intriguing.

Split Opinion: Liverpool could go with Joël Matip or Ibrahima Konaté against Chelsea for the FA Cup final. Two of our writers have their say on what they ...
This is of course a bigger game, and so Konaté should be allowed to partner Van Dijk, and save Matip for the final couple of games of the league season and then for Paris. Jürgen Klopp has been smart in knowing when to rotate Matip and letting his body recover after spending the majority of last season out through injury. This is where Konaté (valued at £27m by Transfermarkt) would come into play, with his speed one of his primary assets. But while Matip may not be the quickest, he is no slouch either, and he more than makes up for any lack of pace with excellent positioning and constant concentration. Nevertheless, if forced to name his overall strongest side, he would probably still lean towards Matip (valued at £16m by Transfermarkt). An elite progressor of the ball as well a seasoned professional at the back, he remains an underrated part of this Liverpool side, and one who is capable of making the difference against Chelsea at both ends of the pitch. So even though Chelsea are current world champions, Liverpool have a stronger case to be the best team on the planet, and indeed in the solar system. Thomas Tuchel needs to make a call on the fitness of N’Golo Kante and Mateo Kovacic, neither of whom are 100 per cent fit. (That lot on Neptune are still playing the W-M formation FFS.) The recent form of both clubs makes them odds-on favourites today, though Chelsea looked a lot perkier when they dismantled Leeds in the week. One of those was a 2-1 victory over Liverpool a decade ago, when Petr Cech made one of the great FA Cup final saves. This is the 150th FA Cup final; none of the previous 149 have involved one recent world champion, never mind two. Then, on 17 May 1997, they beat Middlesbrough in the FA Cup final to win their first major honour in 26 years.
