A rough year in the Currie Cup just got worse for the Lions as the Bulls unexpectedly beat their URC-strength side 43-37 at Loftus Versfeld.

Brother David Kriel had made the initial searing break that put the Bulls on attack, but the Lions regained possession behind their tryline, only for Odendaal to think he was back playing for the Bulls and passing to a blue jersey! They had some hardened campaigners to help them along though and Du Plessis and Gqoboka were in the frontline of the effort. At one stage he gave the Lions 10 penalties in a row and overall the Bulls conceded twice as many penalties as their opponents.

But they'll take heart from this performance, arguably their best of the Currie Cup to date. The Bulls completely dominated the first period, running the Lions off their feet on several occasions. After a few risky passes, Odendaal threw the ball straight into Richard Kriel's hands as the replacement back dotted down in rather comical circumstances.

The second half opened with yet another yellow card, bringing the match tally to four, as it was Du Plessis’ turn to leave the field. The Bulls were reduced to 14 when flank Reinhardt Ludwig was next to be sent to the bin. The Lions hit back through lock Ruben Schoeman, who found himself in all kinds of space to go over for the score with Jordan Hendrikse converting to level at 7-7.

But Gert Smal’s young tyros are made of stern stuff, and after Mokoena nearly slid in on the left, the Lions won possession back in their in-goal area – only for Odendaal to throw the ball straight into the hands of Richard Kriel, who scored the winning try. They managed to get back into the match before halftime via captain Burger Odendaal’s try, and that was the catalyst for a thrilling comeback in the second half. They found a way right through the middle of the Lions defence with a series of pick and go carries, and it proved to be an effective strategy to get over the advantage line. Cape Town — After leading 35-10 in the first half, the Bulls showed serious desperation in the closing stages to hold on for a dramatic 43-37 bonus-point win over the Lions at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday night to go back to the top of the Currie Cup log.
