Chris Paul's Legacy Takes Hit As Phoenix Suns Are Blown Out By ... (Forbes)

Despite the Phoenix Suns' dominance of the regular season, it's the same result — another year and another legacy-defining playoff exit for Chris Paul.

Making matters even worse is the fact that Phoenix was supposed to be on a redemption tour this year after blowing a 2-0 series lead over the Milwaukee Bucks in the NBA Finals. I think that’s on me, the point guard, the leader of the team to get the right shots. And Paul’s play since the Suns took a 2-0 series lead over the Mavericks has been nothing short of pedestrian. In fact, he finished the game with a career-worst minus-39 plus/minus rating and just 10 total points Paul turned in that performance against a pesky Pelicans squad with Devin Booker returning for the first time after a hamstring injury sidelined him for Games 3, 4 and 5. The Suns were eliminated in humiliating fashion by the Dallas Mavericks, losing by a score of 123-90.

The Suns and Their Season Succumbed to the Terror of Luka Doncic (Sports Illustrated)

Phoenix's season—which before the playoffs had been the best in franchise history—ended in shocking, confusing, humiliating fashion on Sunday night.

From Paul’s legacy to Luka’s chance to become the guy to beat, the fallout of this game is significant. For the second straight summer, the Suns will have to dig deep to respond. The loss was a record-scratch moment for the Suns. You play all year to get homecourt in a Game 7 only to be run off the floor anyway. Instead, they come abruptly, like all the lights being switched on in the middle of the night. the Warriors. The 2–0 lead in the Finals. And now, one of the most unexpected blowouts ever. Bridges went 0-for-3 from beyond the arc, which means he finished the series with five made threes, or as many as Spencer Dinwiddie hit in Game 7 alone. He said his only message to the team was it’s time to get back to work. Phoenix’s starters had 37.) It was as thorough of a whooping as you will ever see in professional sports, and that’s with some great players on the other side of the floor. He even out-manipulated Luka earlier in the series. Didn’t Dončić still need more playoff seasoning before he could make the Finals? Wasn’t this supposed to be the storybook finish that had long eluded Chris Paul? Weren’t the Suns far and away the best team in the NBA? Dallas put all those questions to bed mercilessly and with brutality in what was a landscape-changing win for the league. Almost immediately, you could sense a slight murmur in the crowd. At that point, Dallas held what was an insignificant 5–3 lead when Luka Dončić dribbled the ball up the middle of the floor across halfcourt.

Mavericks vs. Suns: Boban Marjanovic has to be held back after ... (CBSSports.com)

Marjanovic was trying to dribble out the clock when Aaron Holiday stole the ball and hit a 3.

The TV broadcast had already cut to the Mavericks bench, so it didn't even catch the moment, but Marjanovic was steamed. As Holiday was speaking to Davis Bertans and Spencer Dinwiddie -- his former teammates with the Washington Wizards -- Marjanovic came charging in. In fact, there was a bit of a fracas after the final buzzer, and Boban Marjanovic had to be held back by his teammates.

Wow. He been playing in games on the road with fires and flares going off in the stands. Here’s a sampling of some of our staff’s favorites from the entertaining night. Luka has elicited some fun reactions from his coworkers in the past with some of his stupendous performances. So, unsurprisingly, the unmassed hoards of Twitter — MFFLs and NBA riff raff alike — had a night with it. The Dallas Mavericks completed a historic Game 7 beatdown of the Phoenix, handing them a 123-90 shellacking that wasn’t even as close as that score would indicate.

And Travis Kelce, the great tight end for the Kansas City Chiefs, was there, too. But he couldn't have been happy Sunday, as Memphis Grizzlies star Ja Morant tweeted: "wayne at the game too luka took dat personal."

Mavericks vs. Suns score, takeaways: Luka Doncic leads Dallas to ... (CBSSports.com)

The Dallas Mavericks are heading to the Western Conference finals and there was little doubt they would get there following their hot start to Game 7.

what do you even say to that? The Suns have as many question marks as any team in the NBA. This is going to be a messy offseason for James Jones to navigate. If there is something going on between him and the team, there's a valid argument in favor of moving him. Before the season, Deandre Ayton asked the Suns for a max contract. If he can't be that player, this version of the Suns is effectively out of the championship race. If his career continues on the trajectory that it is right now, Luka Doncic is going to be one of the greatest players in NBA history. The combination of Reggie Bullock and Dorian Finney-Smith did a masterful job on Paul and Devin Booker. This is bigger than Dallas having a legitimate chance to win the championship. Doncic's bout with the 64-win Suns came one round earlier, but had the same feeling. NBA history is filled with the stars of one generation publicly blessing their successors. In the end, Doncic finished the win with 35 points, 10 rebounds and four assists in just 30 minutes of action. The Dallas Mavericks are heading to the Western Conference finals and there was little doubt they would get there following their hot start to Game 7.
