But there are few things I look forward to more than hunching over the pot and waiting for the beef to get cooked with people I hold close to my heart, laughing at each other as the steam fogs up our glasses. “Everything, Everywhere, All At Once” is what happens when you join all the threads of life together, wind it into a ball of yarn and knit something with it. The process is a funny and tear-jerking one, where audiences go from laughing at one scene to crying at the next. The movie grows better as you watch it, and the closer you look into it, the better. But, in “ Everything, Everywhere, All at Once,” fate is merciless on her, and Evelyn is soon bestowed with a new responsibility: rescuing the multiverse from an omniversal entity by verse-jumping into alternate realities to learn different skills. The jokiest other worlds are the one where everyone has fingers like uncooked frankfurters and another where the deep truth of the void is encompassed in a metaphysical bagel. Admittedly, it is a little hyper for Evelyn to encounter her daughter as the evil queen of the multiverse, dressed like Lady Gaga and bent on the destruction of all forms of life, but it is still continuous with the existing problem: Evelyn can’t listen to Joy, and she can’t change her. The word ‘multiverse’, we are told, was coined by William James in 1895, but he was only talking about the one universe that kept failing to get its act together. The trickeries include mother and daughter becoming two rocks chatting in a deserted landscape, and a scene in a cinema where Evelyn is watching herself in the film we have been watching. There is a perfect visual anticipation of all this in the opening shot of the Wangs’ apartment. “Everything Everywhere All at Once” is a triumph in every sense of the word. This movie was so life-affirming and joyously cathartic that I had to see it the very next day, once more a week later, and I wouldn’t hesitate to see it a fourth time if given the chance. A former child-star who played Data in “The Goonies” and Short Round in “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom,” this movie marks his return to film after a 20-year hiatus — and what a triumphant return it is. Along with the performances, “Everything Everywhere All at Once” excels at everything pretty much everywhere else. As you might have guessed from the film’s name, the film contains a small universe of moving parts, all of which are done well and deserve praise. Additionally, her disapproving father Gong-Gong (James Hong), who effectively disowned her for marrying Waymond and is the source of the intergenerational trauma at the heart of the film, is visiting from China. On top of all that, she’s also being audited by the IRS. Things go from stressful to surreal when, while dealing with an odious auditor played by Jamie Lee Curtis, a version of Waymond from another reality appears and drags Evelyn into a bizarre adventure in which the fate of the multiverse is at stake and only she can save it.

In response, I would say I’m trying Deidre, and it is films like these that remind you of the importance of such a task. In delving deep into the possible ways her life could have worked out, it becomes clear to Evelyn that none of that truly matters, for all she can really do is experience what occurs here-and-now. But in comparison to other fantasy films such as those of the mega-corporate Marvel franchises, The Daniels’ film proves that splendour and expense are still capable of being used as a means of deeper intellectual expression.

thrilling. The way that Everything Everywhere All at Once celebrates the mundane, and puts the everyday on the blockbuster stage, is so special. Without giving too much away, the way that Everything Everywhere All at Once handles a queer storyline is something that had me sobbing in my seat. Jamie Lee Curtis is a true chameleon in this film – going from haughty jobsworth tax officer to villainous and violent destroyer in an instant. By never losing sight of what Everything Everywhere All at Once is really about. It’s a film that asks you to stretch your mind open exponentially and endlessly, to imagine that everything is possible and questions whether because of this does nothing really matter or does everything matter even more. Just know that it’s a film you need to see – a film that needs to be watched on the biggest screen, with the biggest speakers.
