“Even though we were cynical and trying to see what will happen in the other games, we are still going to put everything in the game. The Stormers will be the last South African side in action in the URC when they take on the Scarlets on Saturday afternoon. It will give them a good idea of what they need to do to stay in the quarter-final race on home soil after the Bulls beat the Ospreys and the Sharks lost to Ulster on Friday but picked up a point.

Scarlets loss means Europe top flight for Ospreys (BBC News)

Scarlets agonisingly missed out to Ospreys on Champions Cup qualification following a United Rugby Championship defeat by Stormers.

It was Nel who completed the scoring with his second to break Scarlets hearts. Johnny Williams was forced off for a head injury assessment six minutes from time which allowed Costelow to return to the field. Scarlets had no recognised kicker on the field so turned down a penalty attempt to go for a try in the corner. Stormers also made the dream start to the second half as they took the lead for the first time. Early in the second half the home side lost the nuisance value of Shingler, who was forced off with a rib injury to be replaced by Argentina flanker Tomas Lezana. The hosts had to be content with a third Costelow penalty before Scarlets' defiant defence was typified by Aaron Shingler disrupting Stormers line-out and a Liam Williams turnover.

Last-minute Ruhan Nel try gives Stormers top spot in SA, home ... (News24)

A last-minute try from Ruhan Nel gave the Stormers a win over Scarlets in Llanelli on Saturday night that secures them the South African Shield.

Scarlets found their groove, buoyed on by their home support, and the Stormers defence finally caved when Ryan Conbeer went over in the right corner. As the match progressed, the Stormers began to get stronger in all departments, and it seemed to be a matter of time before the Scarlets resistance caved. Libbok slotted the conversion, and the Stormers were 21-16 up and ahead for the first time in the contest.

Stormers dig deep to beat Scarlets in tension-filled URC clash in ... (TimesLIVE)

The Stormers had to dig deep in Welsh mining country before they came up trumps in the SA conference in the United Rugby Championship (URC) on Saturday.

That converted try handed the Stormers the lead for the first time in the match. That try stretched the home side's lead to 10 points and it served to slap the Stormers from their slumber. To be fair to the Scarlets it looked a well-rehearsed move that they executed to perfection. The fired-up Scarlets who had to win to clinch the Welsh conference and book their place in the lucrative Champions Cup next season, took the fight to the visitors. For most of their clash against the Scarlets they did not look the trendsetting team from SA but in the end they deserve kudos for salvaging the points they needed from the contest. They won a tension-filled encounter against the Scarlets with the last move of the match when Ruhan Nel crashed over to secure a hard-fought 26-21 bonus-point victory.

URC result: Stormers edge Scarlets in thriller (Citizen)

Welsh rugby may be painting themselves as the pauper of the United Rugby Championship, but the Scarlets pushed the Stormers all the way in their match in ...

Scarlets piled on the pressure in the final quarter, but determined defence by the Stormers managed to keep them out while they were reduced to 14 men. In the final minute, fullback Warrick Gelant joined the line and threw a long pass out wide to Nel, who is such a powerful runner and he cut inside, through Liam Williams’ tackle, to score the matchwinning try. Some poor decision-making loosened their grip on the game and then flank Deon Fourie received a controversial yellow card in the 59th minute, for a high tackle. But Scarlets still led 16-7 as the first half was coming to a close. Slick hands by flyhalf Manie Libbok and Willemse saw outside centre Ruhan Nel take advantage of a dreadful defensive miscalculation by Scarlets, roaring through a big gap and powering over the tryline. Flank Hacjivah Dayimani put in a great run out wide and then wing Leolin Zas just had way too elusive feet for the last defender.

I think we got a little bit of a glimpse of it today. There was a lot of hard work and sacrifice that went into this stretch of the campaign. “Winning the Shield was the first step and for us to actually build on the season that we are having, especially after that home stretch and the confidence and momentum that we got, the silverware today is amazing. “But it is just the first step. “The character of the team just came through in the last 10 minutes. We made a hell of a lot of errors, either kicking the ball straight into touch or losing it at the breakdown.
