Liverpool agreed the deal with Fulham for Carvalho shortly after they had ran out of time to complete the transfer before the January deadline. Carvalho - with permission from Fulham - has already visited Liverpool's AXA Training Centre in Kirkby, where he met with Reds boss Jurgen Klopp and the coaching staff, underwent a medical and agreed personal terms on a five-year contract. Relations between the clubs became strained during that period, but have since improved due to the impact Harry Wilson made since moving to Craven Cottage for £12m last year.

Liverpool were close to perfection but the signing of Carvalho shows work has already begun on bridging the gap to City.

All this might have been immaterial by the morning of 23 May, when in dreamland Liverpool would be awaking with sore heads and ready for a parade. If the team wins on Saturday then it would be a great high to finish the season on. It’s nice from a personal point of view, and if Salah stays at Liverpool for next season then he will win in then as well. If Mohamed Salah stays, we still need another striker.

Origi may be remembered as an out-and-out centre-forward - which Carvalho most certainly is not - but he was frequently played by Klopp as a wide player in a front three, cutting in from the left to score some of his memorable goals for the Reds. If Carvalho is considered a replacement for the popular Brazil striker, then it will be in the long term, not immediately. For the young player’s talent, Klopp is not going to change his entire system to accommodate a teenager with three Premier League starts under his belt. At 19, he is not another Luis Diaz, a world-class star who has the experience and knowledge to slot straight in as a genuine first-team starter. It is a long way from training on Clapham Common, albeit with a community-based club who have a big reputation for developing youth talent, to Anfield.
