DStv Premiership Starting XI: Orlando Pirates v Maritzburg United 24 ... (Soccer Laduma)

Orlando Pirates shift their attention to bouncing back in the DStv Premiership when they host Maritzburg United on Tuesday evening at Orlando Stadium.

The sides could not be separated in the reverse fixture after playing to a goalless draw, as Pirates remained unbeaten against Maritzburg since 2016. The Buccaneers' last encounter in the league was a 1-0 defeat to TS Galaxy almost a month ago and they have since dropped down to seventh on the log, nine points behind second-placed Cape Town City. Pirates are still smarting from their CAF Confederation Cup final defeat against RSB Berkane on penalties last Friday, but they have a chance getting back to the continent as they play the first of their three games in hand. The Team of Choice, meanwhile, will be playing their final game of the season without pressure after sealing their top-flight status with a 1-0 win over Baroka, who were relegated as a result over the weekend. However, the Soweto giants' league form has been patchy over the last couple months, as they have not scored from their last three outings. Orlando Pirates shift their attention to bouncing back in the DStv Premiership when they host Maritzburg United on Tuesday evening at Orlando Stadium.

Bucs’ relentless attack spearheaded by Lorch's running provided the second as his low cross found Peprah to place a classy finish form the edge of the box. After missing a penalty that cost the Bucs their only chance to win silverware this season in the Confederation Cup against RS Berkane on Friday, Lorch played like a someone who had a point to prove. The first goal was finally scored by Lorch after 21 minutes from a long pass forward by Hotto. Maritzburg only have themselves to blame for the strike as they tried to set up an offside trap for Lorch but failed.

Orlando Pirates vs Maritzburg United Preview: Kick-off time, TV ... (Goal.com)

The Buccaneers are still licking their wounds from the Caf Confederation Cup disappointment and are hoping to get solace from their league games.

Maritzburg have established themselves as a stubborn side on any day and the Team of Choice is one of the three teams to beat champions Mamelodi Sundowns in the PSL this season. The Maritzburg clash is the first of the remaining three games they are left to play and if they win all, they will sign off on position two, provided they boost their goal difference with four more goals. Orlando Pirates continue with their bid to end the season in the Premier Soccer League top-two when they host Maritzburg United on Tuesday.

And that nearly paid off as hit the upright after finding a pocket of space outside the box. If they indeed play continental football, Pirates will have players such as Lorch to thank. Samu pulled one back for the visitors, but Lorch was not done as he continued to crack the whip on Maritzburg with his third assist of the night as he sent free Kabelo Dlamini who picked his spot and slotted home.

Orlando Pirates recorded their first DStv Premiership win in four matches as they comfortably beat Maritzburg United 4-1 at the Orlando Stadium on Tuesday ...

Thembinkosi Lorch was the star of the show with a goal and three assists to help Mandla Ncikazi's side return to winning ways. The Sea Robbers moved up to sixth in the standings on 43 points, six away from their target of CAF Champions League football. Macheke threatened again four minutes later with a strike from distance that drifted just to the right of the goal and he dragged an effort wide of the left post on 41 minutes after cutting inside from the left flank. It was 3-0 on the hour mark as Hotto got in on act with a finish from inside the box after being picked out by Lorch, although the KZN outfit pulled one back just three minutes later from the right boot of Samu to register his fifth goal of the season. The Team of Choice looked to respond and Tawanda Macheke was inches away from equalising with a close-range header on 25 minutes after getting on the end of Clayton Daniels' cross. Lorch forced Marcel Engelhardt into a save with an effort from inside the box after latching onto a through-ball from Bandile Shandu in the eighth minute and the midfielder struck the right post two minutes later with a shot from just outside the area.

Thembinkosi Lorch was the star of the show with a goal and two assists to help Mandla Ncikazi’s side return to winning ways. The Sea Robbers moved up to sixth in the standings on 43 points, six closer to their target of CAF Champions League football. The Soweto giants went on to use their full quota of subs in the end to give Shandu and Lorch a breather ahead of the games against Royal and SuperSport in the coming days. But Pirates restored their three-goal cushion with 21 minutes left on the clock and Lorch provided his second assist of the game when he found Dlamini inside the area on right to fire past Engelhardt. Peprah nearly made it five two minutes later, but Engelhardt was on hand to keep out his shot from range and it was the Ghanaian’s last involvement as he was replaced shortly afterwards, having picked up a slight knock. Bucs would finish the half on the front foot though, after they scored a second goal three minutes before the break through Peprah, who tucked his shot into the bottom left corner of the net from outside the box. The Team of Choice looked to respond and Tawanda Macheke was inches away from equalising with a close-range header on 25 minutes after getting on the end of Clayton Daniels’ cross. Lorch forced Marcel Engelhardt into a save with an effort from inside the box after latching onto a through-ball from Bandile Shandu in the eighth minute and the midfielder struck the right post two minutes later with a shot from just outside the area. However, Lorch would not be denied a third time around on 21 minutes as he slotted home into the bottom right corner of the net after being set up by Deon Hotto on the counter. Kwame Peprah, Deon Hotto and Kabelo Dlamini also got on the scoresheet for the hosts, with Friday Samu getting a solitary reply for the Team of Choice, who finished the season in 12th place.

Pirates bounce back from Confed disappointment to thrash ... (News24)

Orlando Pirates kept up their pursuit for CAF Champions League qualification with a 4-1 victory over Maritzburg United at the Orlando Stadium on Tuesday.

Pirates now face a crucial fixture away to Royal AM on Friday before finishing their campaign against SuperSport United the following Monday. Maritzburg had little but pride to play for in their final match of the season, as they had already secured their league status with a win against Baroka on Saturday. Pirates came into the contest following the heartbreak of losing the CAF Confederation Cup final on penalties against RBS Berkane in Nigeria on Friday.
