“I don’t think we should buy into the conversation that says we shouldn’t get some of that money back. “We need to understand and help these groups to create linkages and collaborate to reach sustainability.” Processes are so rigorous and limiting, and while larger institutions can access funding, they are not as embedded in the community. We have seen successes in education and health, and we need more examples.” “It is about a trialogue – government, non-profit and private sector working together. The organisations we support know societal challenges because they are on the ground. When we launched the sanitation project for schools with Vodacom, it became even clearer that it’s easier when money goes to local NPOs or community-based organisations that know what is happening on the ground. This can sometimes lead to unnecessary red tape, negatively impacting on the work of civil society. The relationship between donors and recipients of donor funding can be fraught with power imbalances. The decrease is attributed, in part, to Covid-19 forcing countries to look inwards and prioritise their domestic needs over international aid. “If funding is given to local NPOs, you see the impact. “We should free ourselves from donor dependency, and we can.

Women are crucial to Africa’s (and the world’s) food supply as their roles across food value chains make up 43% of the African agricultural labour force. Farmers are on the front line of this crisis and we need to help support them in order to boost food production and security. It cannot be said enough that Africa has contributed the least to the climate crisis, and yet it is unjustly experiencing the worst of its impacts. The African Union announced the theme for 2022 as: Strengthening Resilience in Nutrition and Food Security on the African Continent. This year’s theme is a direct response to one of the biggest challenges Africa is facing today. Africa’s countries have been facing a significant rise in food insecurity as a result of climate change, the socio-economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, and conflict seen across some regions. This is a sharp rise from 286 million in 2021, and is reported to be the worst food crisis since 2017.

Africa Day an opportune occasion for us to take stock (Independent Online)

Africa Day, celebrated annually on May 25, seems like an appropriate occasion for taking stock to see if the optimists or the sceptics have been right.

The first is the strength of the institutional structure on which a democracy rests. Is this the end of the road? South Africa continues to ward off the worst. The ruling ANC, having implemented the National Democratic Revolution (NRD) with its noble objective of creating a united democratic society, subsequently declared that to achieve its objectives, the NRD required the control of state machinery. Given the history of protracted conflict, racial, ethnic and cultural diversity, along with glaring economic inequalities, many did not believe that a multiracial democracy would successfully take root in South Africa. The TRC and the democratic Constitution became models many other countries across the world followed as they, too, were emerging from an oppressive authoritarian past during the so-called ‘third wave’ of democratisation.

Not Yet Uhuru — rethinking the meaning of African freedom on ... (Daily Maverick)

Africa Day - we cannot be free as Africans when our social and economic development capabilities remain so disparate.

Yet Africa is noted to be having a young population, a cohort weighted with the responsibility of setting the agenda for the renewal of Africa. Young people on the continent are often described as “leaders of tomorrow”, yet residing in an opaque present. We cannot talk of African freedom when daily the lives of African youths are robbed of their future on the same continent they call home. The majority of African countries have gained political freedom since 1963 yet continue in the present to be enslaved — political freedom that has no social and economic freedom. Yet there is scant commitment to investing in infrastructure, rather preferring to be on standby to fight off imaginary threats of danger, especially in disputed border regions on the continent. A move away from the tired, myopic weak societal conjectures of freedom-chasing validated in events, to embracing an experience of freedom as a continued state of being, a daily liberating reality of being free. Yes, freedom really should remind us of how the sacrifices of others have led us to enjoy our present liberties.

For India, this will be both a statement of its South-South solidarity and a key aspect of its larger strategy. In a volatile and uncertain world, India and Africa can come together in the building of reliable and resilient supply chains. Operation Sahayata to assist cyclone-hit Mozambique in 2019 and Operation Vanilla during the 2020 flood in Madagascar are illustrative. Modi's vision of cooperation with Africa centres on health, digital and green growth. It was natural for India and Africa, therefore, to stand together during the Covid-19 pandemic. Maritime security cooperation, once centred on Mauritius and the Seychelles, now extends to coastal African nations. A new era has begun with the introduction of e-Vidya Bharati for tele-education and e-Arogya Bharati for telemedicine. India is also Africa's fifth-largest investor, with a cumulative commitment of $70.7 billion. India is Africa's fourth-largest partner with a volume of about $70 billion. During the past five years, 7 IT Centres in South Africa, Egypt, Morocco, Lesotho, Ghana, Namibia and Tanzania, and the Centre for Geoinformatics Application in Rural Development in Madagascar and Niger were established to promote Africa's digital transformation. India has completed 189 projects in Africa, with 76 others at the execution stage, and 68 at the pre-execution stage. The prime minister's address to the Ugandan Parliament in July 2018 laid out the guiding principles of India's contemporary approach.

That said, it is important to emphasise that the second republic under President Emmerson Mnangagwa has played a crucial role in the consolidation of African liberation values. A case in point is that of the material and ideological support which our own then Zanu and the PF-Zapu received from the Frontline States. Therefore, Africa Day is a celebration of a people’s victory against the toxic legacy of imperialism. Initially, colonialism made Africa a zone of non-being and the reversal of this process had a rehumanising effect to every institution and facet of the African society. African nationalism became the transformative agent from the politics of looting and exploitation to the aspired politics of pro-people policy delivery. From the outset, the OAU as a strategic diplomatic alliance for Africa’s independence was formed to collectively enforce the fall of the colonial empire.

Five Africa Day Facts - The Daily Vox (The Daily Vox)

May 25 is commemorated in the African continent as Africa Day. It is a day that marks the founding of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU).

The AU hopes the “2022 theme of the year will be a good opportunity for continued advocacy to ensure gains made over the years in eliminating nutrition and all its forms are not reversed”. It had an initial aim to encourage the decolonisation of Angola, Mozambique, South Africa and Southern Rhodesia. There was a pledge to support African “freedom fighters” with finance, arms, volunteers and training bases and to close off their airspace to colonial forces. In 1963, emperor Haile Selassie hosted the representatives of thirty African nations in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. At this point, around two-thirds of the continent had achieved independence and decolonisation. It will be taking place in Equatorial Guinea. The 2022 African Day’s theme is “Strengthening resilience in nutrition and food security on the African continent”. The OAU emerged from a congress that was held in Ghana on April 15 1958. The OAU was an intergovernmental organisation established on May 25 1963 in Ethiopia. There were initially 32 signatories to the organisations.
