British prosecutors said that they had authorized criminal charges against Mr. Spacey, 62, for four counts of sexual assault against three men.
A massage therapist sued Mr. Spacey in California in 2019, accusing him of groping and trying to kiss him before offering him oral sex during a massage. “It seems that it only took a male under 30 to make Mr. Spacey feel free to touch us,” Mr. Cavazos wrote. Mr. Spacey is a two-time Academy Award winner. His new American thriller was also being sold at Cannes, according to Rolling Stone. But more recently, he has found roles in smaller films, including an Italian feature and an American thriller. It was being sold at the Cannes Film Festival, Deadline added. The spokesman declined to comment on whether the service would pursue extradition proceedings if that did not occur. The news release said the charges concerned three complainants. One actor, Roberto Cavazos, wrote on Facebook that he “had a couple of nasty encounters with Spacey that were close to being called harassment” at the theater. The first person to publicly accuse Mr. Spacey of sexual misconduct was the actor Anthony Rapp, who said in 2017 that Mr. Spacey had made unwanted sexual advances toward him in the 1980s, when he was 14 years old. The incidents dated from March 2005, August 2008 and April 2013, it added — a time when Mr. Spacey was artistic director of the Old Vic theater in London. All the incidents occurred in London, except one from 2013, which occurred in Gloucestershire, England. The Metropolitan Police said that one of the men was now “in his 40s” and that the other two were now in their 30s, but did not provide their exact ages. Rosemary Ainslie, head of the service’s special crime division, said in the release that Mr. Spacey, 62, had “also been charged with causing a person to engage in penetrative sexual activity without consent.”

He said he made a trip to London in February 2020 for a possible film, but then the pandemic hit. Thursday’s court session in New York City dealt with a technical issue in the civil lawsuit, whether it was better handled in a federal or state U.S. court. Spacey denies the allegations. The alleged victims are now in their 30s and 40s. Spacey testified that his main residence and domicile is in Baltimore, where he moved for the filming of “House of Cards.” He said he was “beguiled by its charm, its beauty.” But he also testified about his time living in London as the artistic director of the Old Vic. “It was extremely important to me that I endear myself to the British public, that I’m not running away,” he said, noting that his start there was troubled by a “disastrous production” in 2005 of Arthur Miller’s last play.

Spacey, who won Academy Awards for his performances in “The Usual Suspects” and “American Beauty,” starred as ruthless politician Frank Underwood in the Netflix series “House of Cards” when the allegations against him first surfaced. Prosecutors in Los Angeles and London launched investigations in late 2018, though the Los Angeles case did not move forward because the alleged incident fell outside the statute of limitations. More than a dozen others came forward with allegations against Spacey after Rapp, some of which resulted in legal action.

(At the time, Spacey released a statement apologizing to Rapp, but claimed he had no memory of the alleged interaction.) Since 2017, Spacey has been embroiled in lawsuits pertaining to alleged sexual misconduct in the U.S., including one accusing him of fondling an 18-year-old man in a restaurant in 2016 and one accusing him of groping and attempting to kiss a massage therapist before offering him oral sex during a massage. The actor has been accused multiple times of sexual misconduct, including sexually assaulting two minors in the U.S. One of his accusers was actor Anthony Rapp, who came forward about Spacey’s alleged misconduct in 2017, claiming that Spacey made sexual advances toward him at a house party in 1986, when Rapp was just 14. The team behind Spacey's new film, Peter Five Eight, has said their production is 'for fans who care more for the art than the scandal'
Nero’s film was the first to feature Spacey that was announced, and the decision to cast him met with considerable backlash. The film, shot in California, stars Spacey as Peter, a charismatic man who shows up in a small mountainside community. Peter Five Eight was viewed as his return to the profession and buyers were courted at the Cannes Market earlier in the festival.
Despite the sexual assault allegations, Kevin Spacey is attempting a career comeback at Cannes.
Kevin Spacey also has another upcoming film for Cannes where he will play a priest in Gateway to the West about Genghis Khan’s grandson. The President of VMI says that even though it is very early on in the deal-making, it’s considered a “quality film.” Peter Five Eight producer Michael Hall has said he prefers to focus on the talent of Kevin Spacey instead of the controversy of him. Following the sexual assault allegations, Kevin Spacey’s career as an actor was hitting pariah status.

As for projects from scandal-plagued stars or filmmakers, Europe may continue to provide a safe haven — and perhaps even a road to redemption for the canceled. That more laissez-faire attitude seems to extend also to the Saudi Film Commission, which has returned to the festival this year after laying low since the 2018 murder of Washington Post columnist Jamal Khashoggi — a crime that U.S. intelligence attributed to Saudi government agents. The fact that there was an audience at all for the film — which boasts the tagline “The Guilty Always Pay the Price” — could be considered a coup for VMI, given Spacey’s pariah status in Hollywood. After at least 16 people came forward in late 2017 alleging lewd and inappropriate behavior on the part of the actor toward young men on sets, he was quickly dropped from the final season of Netflix’s House of Cards and edited out of the Sony film All the Money in the World. He hasn’t been seen onscreen since. Wild Bunch’s slate also includes the period drama Jeanne Du Barry, which will see Johnny Depp — currently battling ex-wife Amber Heard in a Virginia court amid allegations of domestic abuse from both sides — portray King Louis XV. (And in a notable move last year, Wild Bunch hired exiled Hollywood mogul Ron Meyer, who was fired by NBCUniversal in 2020 for having an undisclosed sexual relationship with actress Charlotte Kirk when she was a teen.) International sales outfit Wild Bunch, which has long championed polarizing projects (think Gaspar Noe’s 2002 drama Irreversible, which included a controversial nine-minute rape scene), has two projects up for grabs in Cannes that feature the high-profile accused. June and John is a low-budget romance shot by Luc Besson, the La Femme Nikita director who’s been accused of rape by several actresses. But when it comes to work involving alleged predators, he adds, “I think it’s something we would continue to stay away from at this juncture.” As another top buyer puts it, “It’s already so hard to release a movie. So, following precedent, there is no shortage of projects featuring the scandal-plagued on the market at this year’s Cannes Film Festival. The corrupt-cop thriller Mace stars James Franco, whose career took a nosedive after a 2018 Los Angeles Times exposé in which five women accused him of sexually exploitative behavior. From a cramped hotel suite in a luxury Cannes hotel, a pair of film executives are trying to pull off an unlikely feat: Sell distribution rights to Kevin Spacey’s comeback film. “I just pop in, make sure that the film plays and looks good, and then I walk out.” “The feedback is very good.
