Champions League final: Excitement builds in Liverpool (BBC News)

Traders say the city is "the next best thing to Paris" ahead of the Champions League final.

Merseyside Police said the weekend was "set to be a busy one" and predicted "large numbers of people" travelling to the city. The 62-year-old said she was a "little worried" about people getting too drunk and rowdy but she hoped the match would go well and it would "give a boost to the local economy". Retail complex Liverpool ONE said it anticipated the weekend to be "the busiest of the year" for visitor numbers as fans flock to the city. Mayor of Liverpool, Joanne Anderson, agreed there was a "real buzz" in the city "regardless of the outcome". Peter Hunter, one of the directors for Liverpool's Baltic Triangle, said the final was both a "mood and trade" boost for the city. With excitement building, Liverpool has been described as "the next best thing to being in Paris".

We know very well the demands at this club, the history, but for us to get here is huge," said Ancelotti, who last year was in charge of Liverpool's local rivals Everton. Liverpool look to have the stronger side on paper, with Alisson in goal, Virgil van Dijk marshalling their defence and Salah and Sadio Mane leading their attack. The Anfield club can win their seventh European Cup, a tally that would see them go level with AC Milan and leave only Real with more victories.

Liverpool hope to secure a third trophy this season, while Real Madrid seek to add to their La Liga triumph.

“It is a great success for all of us to be here. The final promises to be a fitting climax to the European season, with Liverpool looking to win a second Champions League in four seasons since losing 1-3 to Real Madrid in Kyiv in 2018, when Mohamed Salah went off injured in the first half and Gareth Bale scored twice for the Spaniards. The Joy of Six: Liverpool v Real Madrid (The Guardian)

From a first Paris meeting to a bizarre Covid spectacle via some big nights at Anfield, here are half a dozen memorable matches.

The club later said he was concussed after a collision with Ramos. Whatever the cause, his errors gifted Madrid a 13th European Cup. It took the momentum out of Liverpool’s play and Madrid finished the half the better side. He scored 61 goals in all competitions that season but, remarkably, Madrid did not win La Liga or the Champions League. Barcelona – and that man Messi – won the treble. Fernando Torres was irresistible and played as though he was trying to kill the club he grew up hating, tormenting Pepe and a 35-year-old Fabio Cannavaro with his pace and off-the-shoulder runs and giving Liverpool a 1-0 lead in the 16th minute. Gerrard was fighting a losing battle with his ageing limbs, too, and it showed. When Madrid next turned up at Anfield, only three players – Marcelo, Pepe and Casillas – remained from that harrowing night in 2009 and Carlo Ancelotti was in charge. Dossena did it again a few days later, scoring in the 4-1 defeat of Manchester United that firmly put Liverpool back into the Premier League title race. If that sounds outlandish, Dossena, who was more noteworthy for how amply he filled his Liverpool shirt than what he did in it, nipped in to score a fourth. Some fleet-footed trickery from Ryan Babel helped to create a second for Gerrard early in the second half and then the match entered its trippy phase. As for Madrid, the shocking defeat sparked a second era of gálacticos at the Bernabéu, where Alonso would be strutting his stuff just months later. “It went in and I ran behind the goal to celebrate.” It was Liverpool’s – and Bob Paisley’s – third European Cup, putting them one ahead of Nottingham Forest and him one ahead of Brian Clough. That it came against the record six-time winners made it all the sweeter. For clubs with such rich history in Europe it seems strange now that this was the first time they met.

Champions League final preview: A tale of revenge for Liverpool (Mail and Guardian)

The Reds are the favourites this time around, but they must not let emotions of the past cloud their heads when they face Real Madrid on Saturday.

But Vinicius may also have to work on his cardio; when Liverpool do get on to the front foot, Alexander Arnold almost turns into a winger. Most pundits will see the best battle between Liverpool’s centre back Virgil van Djik and Real Madrid forward Karim Benzema. Benzema has scored 44 goals in 45 games this season, with 15 of those goals coming in the Champions League. Somehow, for every striker that comes up against Van Djik, it is usually a mismatch. For Real Madrid, the experience that they have in midfield with Luca Modric, Casemiro and Tony Kroos may be able to dictate the game in key moments. Real Madrid have shown defensive vulnerability in both La Liga and the Champions League this season. “We lost in the final [four years ago]. It was a sad day for all of us, but yeah, I think it’s revenge time.” Coming from Liverpool’s talisman, Mohamed Salah, it can be understood after he sustained an injury against Real Madrid in the final in 2018.

Liverpool team vs Real Madrid predicted as Thiago, Fabinho and ... (Liverpool.com)

Liverpool take on Real Madrid in the Champions League final tonight in Paris. Here, our writers select the starting XIs we would like Jürgen Klopp to ...

Nonetheless, I'd still risk starting him considering the strength of Real Madrid's midfield and his key to Liverpool's harmony in the area. He has to start, alongside Mané through the middle and Salah on the right. Fabinho looks ready to go, having participated in full training since Wednesday. But Thiago was a notable absentee from that open session — it's a relief that he is in contention at all, but this is where Klopp can rely on his depth. The worst case scenario is both aren't right and come off after 20 minutes, in which case you still have three substitutions available. Liverpool have had a whole season to prepare for this, and work out who should play. At least seven of the names on the starting sheet are 100 per cent clear, assuming everyone is fit and able to take part, while any injuries could actually make those decisions easier.

Liverpool vs Real Madrid: A date with destiny beckons in Paris (Independent Online)

Premier League runners up Liverpool and Spanish La Liga kings Real Madrid will go head-to-head in Saturday night's UEFA Champions League final in Paris.

It is the experience of this core that Real Madrid is able to rely on when the going gets tough in key matches. Will his words come back to haunt him after the game tonight?. And this is the challenge that Jurgen Klopp and his Reds troop face in Paris tonight. From there, Los Blancos would pull one back before the interval from Ballon D'Or front runner Karim Benzema as the sides headed to half time with City 2-1 up. A date with destiny beckons tonight and Real will look to ensure that there is another party with their legion of fans at their customary point of title celebrations, the Cibeles Fountain in the heart of Madrid, come the early hours of Sunday morning when they return from the French capital. It is a comeback not only right up there with those that Real have pulled off against both PSG and Chelsea this season, but it can also take pride of place alongside Barcelona's famous comeback against PSG when the Blaugrana overturned a 4-0 deficit suffered at the Parc de Princes to slaughter the Parisians 6-1 at the Camp Nou in their Champions League round of 16 second leg clash.
