What veterans' poems can teach us about healing on Memorial Day ... (Iowa Capital Dispatch)

On Memorial Day, "poems written by veterans that focus on honoring those who have died may give us a clue" to healing our deep divisions.

These words cannot be just lines or lists; they become, by being memorialized in a black stone, a “mirror,” the reader’s and thus society’s “reflection.” All on the bench are implicated; the names died for us, and, as a result, are us. The words are “names,” which “could be lines / of poems or a grocery list. For the visitor, the memorial becomes “an opened book,” a place where “A word loses its ability to conjure / trapped inside a black mirror.” We can also learn from Brock Jones, an Army veteran who served three tours of duty in Iraq and one in Afghanistan. He named his award-winning book “ Cenotaph,” the name for a tomb to honor those whose graves lie elsewhere. As a result, their image in the stone becomes a living memorial. Yet even with such a positive affirming metaphor, the speaker’s mind and heart are not fully at ease. “I go down the 58,022 names, / half-expecting to find / my own in letters like smoke. The holiday emerged from the Civil War as a celebration almost exclusively for veterans of the Union Army to remember those who had died. They address language’s inability to capture or express loss linked to memories of war. The concluding line relieves that worry – the names are not being erased. / He’s lost his right arm / inside the stone. It surfaces daily as communities such as New Orleans wrestle with whether or not to keep memorial statues honoring Confederate leaders like Robert E. Lee. Editor’s note: The Lee statue was removed in May 2017, but the debate over removing Confederate influence continues.

It's the unofficial start of summer in the US, and it's a good time to score a deal on equipment for your next adventure.

If you're the type that needs to have good espresso on the trail, the Picopresso is our favorite portable espresso maker. Oru’s foldable kayaks are another possibility for those of us without the space to store and transport boats. This is the best thing I’ve tested this year. Strap your tent poles to the outside, and you’re ready to do a couple of weeks on the trail. If you plan to use it in a treeless area like the beach, be sure to pick up the poles, which are sold separately (though they seem to be out of stock everywhere at the moment). Add the Picopresso to your cart to see the discount at checkout. The Ranger is the smaller, more portable sibling to the Yukon, which we reviewed and liked. This one just adds the ability to recline for some night sky viewing. It burns wood and charcoal and packs down surprisingly small when you want to throw it in the trunk and hit the road. I think WIRED associate editor Adrienne So summed up this chair well when she said: “To be honest, it’s huge, heavy, takes up a lot of space, and is awkward to fold. Our favorite barefoot shoes are on sale at REI. The women’s sizing is also on sale for the same price. Whether you're a kayaker, climber, griller, or someone who just loves to sit on a camp chair and bask in the sun, these Memorial Day sales have something for you.

Since being sworn in as a member of the United States House of Representatives, it has been a key passion and priority of mine to care for the families left behind by our fallen heroes and my fallen brothers and sisters. As a nation, I ask that we reflect upon those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom, pay tribute to the fallen and never forget the families they left behind. This article is an Op-Ed and as such, the opinions expressed are those of the authors. Deeply emotional moments in my career involving the fallen and their families often play out in my memories as I reflect upon the true meaning of Memorial Day. Several years ago, when I was freshly promoted to brigadier general in the Air Force, one of my first duties was to serve as the accident investigation board president for an Air Force MC-12 reconnaissance aircraft that crashed on a mission over Afghanistan, horrifically killing all four crewmembers on board. As I reflect upon those our country has lost and those brave warriors whom I personally knew, I am reminded of the importance of not only honoring and remembering their service and sacrifice, but honoring them through action, by caring for the families they leave behind. Memorial Day is one of the most sacred days of the year for our nation — and for me personally.

Editorial: America needs a Memorial Day for gun-violence victims (Los Angeles Times)

Today is perhaps the most somber of all American holidays. Memorial Day is a time to remember our war dead, those in the armed services who gave their lives ...

An official day dedicated to this tragic reality will remind us that firearms take a daily toll in this country, and perhaps move Americans to action. Consider the number of people murdered by gunmen at houses of worship over the past several years. Their names should be before us, observed on a specified day each year, when we remember them and the need to address this enemy in our midst. And a 2014 study by UC San Francisco found that people with ready access to firearms were three times more likely to die by suicide. Memorial Day is a time to remember our war dead, those in the armed services who gave their lives to protect our nation. Dedicating a day to honor these veterans and mourn their deaths helps remind us of the terrible toll of war.

Internationally, fares are also up from 2019, but only 10%. Prices to Europe are about 5% cheaper than before the pandemic — $868 for the average round trip, according to Hopper. Keyes said Europe is the best travel bargain out there. Saturday's cancellations were due to bad weather and "air traffic control actions," Atlanta-based Delta said in an email to The Associated Press, noting it's trying to cancel flights at least 24 hours in advance of the Memorial Day weekend. However, airlines have thousands fewer employees than they did in 2019, and that has at times contributed to widespread flight cancellations. Domestic airline fares for summer are averaging more than $400 for a round trip, 24% higher than this time in 2019, before the pandemic, and a robust 45% higher than a year ago, according to travel-data firm Hopper. Delta Air Lines canceled the most flights among major U.S. airlines, scratching 133 flights on Monday, or 4% of its operations, according to FlightAware. The carrier was forced to cancel more than 400 flights on Saturday and Sunday. On Monday, 1,634 flights had been canceled as of 11:52 p.m. ET, according to flight tracking website FlightAware. That followed roughly 1,640 cancellations on Sunday, 1,500 on Saturday and 2,300 on Friday. More than 400 of Monday's cancellations involved aircraft scheduled to fly to or from U.S. cities.

And the township of Franklin is the one to give the county that distinction. It is a solemn time, and … the nation should come once a year and pay homage to its sacred dead; it awakens the memories of the past and does us good. “We were here to do honor to those who fell for their country,” O’Donnell said largely in reference to the Civil War that ended nearly 40 years prior. “Lenawee County has the distinction of having erected the first monument dedicated to the dead heroes of that civil war. The Daily Telegram on Monday, May 30, 1904, devoted more than half its front-page column space to what was alternately called Memorial Day or Decoration Day, reminding readers of the solemn occasion. It was one that had gained prominence more than 100 years ago, and orators took time during their remarks in Lenawee County for the true meaning of the date.
