A new bill passed by South Carolina lawmakers may help eliminate some of the issues law enforcement officials are facing within the workforce.
Local representatives think starting early can help with the transition from high school to a career in law enforcement. For the longest time in SC, you had to be 21 years old to be a law enforcement officer. For years people under 21 could not even buy a handgun until 2008 when state law changed the age down to 18. With the new bill, they can begin training immediately upon receiving their diploma. On Wednesday, Horry County Sheriff Phillip Thompson announced the passage of Senate Bill 1092. “I think all law enforcement agencies will benefit from the passage of this bill in the long run, and I want to thank our state lawmakers for their support."

My wrists are killing me. It's probably because I'm getting older, but I also have carpal tunnel from years of bad posture and ergonomics. Ever.
And it comes in a colour that matches the rest of the stuff on my desk. And while the Logitech Lift hasn’t eliminated my pain, the physical act of moving my arm around the desk to control my computer means I’m taking the pressure off my battered wrist. The grime on my Logitech Lift review unit is concentrated around the parts where you grip the hardest: the thumb and forefinger. Part of the issue is that half of the mouse is rubberised, so it’s like a bonding agent for skin grease and lotions. But after about a week, I started to feel more comfortable with the movements required to operate a mouse like this. Every time, I’m confused about which of the company’s many apps I should use to get things the way I like them. The Logitech Lift vertical mouse is a sibling of Logitech’s MX Vertical mouse, so it comes from solid stock. Other buttons include a clickable scroll wheel, which I use with my index finger to scan through pages, and a small button beneath that, which adjusts the DPI. Logitech also includes two thumb buttons pre-programmed as Forward and Back for browsing. I used the Lift on a fabric desk mat, which it seems tuned for, though you will have to go into the crevices on the bottom of the mouse with a toothpick to clean it. Admittedly, I eat at my desk, which probably contributed to the build-up. However, the Lift is smaller, making it more comfortable for smaller hands (Logitech has a size-finder for mice if you’re curious if this will fit your grip). It also comes in a spectrum of colours, including rose, which you see here, graphite, and pale grey. This vertical mouse is the first time I’ve ever used one, but it feels like an apt entry point into the world of better ergonomics.

“Boeing is honored the German government has selected the CH-47F Chinook for its future heavy-lift helicopter requirements," the company said in a statement. Germany has also broken a long-standing policy against sending weapons to conflict zones and is providing military support to Ukraine. The German Government yesterday announced that Boeing’s CH-47F Chinook has been selected for its heavy-lift helicopter requirements (STH) for the German Bundeswehr.
Germany intends to acquire 60 Boeing CH-47 Chinooks for a long-running effort to replace the elderly Sikorsky CH-53G helicopters operated by its air force.
Berlin has been attempting to replace the CH-53G fleet for the best part of a decade, including a bungled previous procurement which was cancelled in September 2020 due to cost errors. A German court ruled last December that the termination of that effort was legal, clearing the way for the current contest. The new helicopters will be acquired via the USA’s Foreign Military Sales process.

We look forward to working with the U.S. and German governments to finalize this sale under the Foreign Military Sales process. “Boeing is honored the German government has selected the CH-47F Chinook for its future heavy-lift helicopter requirements. The German government has selected Boeing's CH-47F Chinook for its heavy-lift helicopter requirements for the German Bundeswehr (Army).
So far, orders for the CH-53K have been limited to just the USMC and Israel. Sikorsky continues to leverage this sustainment approach to support the CH-53G helicopter fleet, and most parts of the initial package have been delivered. The need to replace the Sikorsky CH-53G with 40 to 60 new “off-the-shelf” helicopters had been the subject of countless delays and cancellations, as the German Federal Ministry of Defense stated that those models offered as replacements were far too expensive.
The Germany Ministry of Defense has selected Boeing's CH-47F Chinook over Lockheed Martin Sikorsky's CH-53K.
We look forward to working with the U.S. and German governments to finalize this sale under the Foreign Military Sales process.” “Boeing is honored the German government has selected the CH-47F Chinook for its STH heavy-lift helicopter requirements,” Boeing said in a statement. The Chinook beat out Lockheed Martin Sikorsky’s CH-53K heavy lift helicopter for the contract award.
“Boeing is honored the German government has selected the CH-47F Chinook for its future heavy-lift helicopter requirements,” the spokesperson said in an email.
The STH saga also comes to a close in a very different security environment than what existed in Europe before Russia invaded Ukraine. That conflict has pushed NATO member states to modernize and expand their militaries more aggressively. The CH-53K has lifted loads up to 36,000 lb. Each King Stallion is powered by three 7,500-shaft-horsepower General Electric GE38-1B engines that give the helicopter massive lifting power for a maximum takeoff gross weight of 88,000 pounds. Though both are heavy lifters and have radically different designs, Germany wasn’t the first time the CH-47 and CH-53K fought for the same program. In September 2020, Germany rejected both offers claiming they were too expensive, effectively canceling the program. Chinook and the King Stallion have gone head-to-head for the German STH program for several years. F-model Chinooks can carry 36 troops, have an external sling-load capacity of 26,000 pounds using the center hook, and are powered by twin Lycoming T55-GA714A engines, each with 4,733 shaft horsepower. However, the Army has decided not to purchase advanced rotor blades. “Boeing is honored the German government has selected the CH-47F Chinook for its future heavy-lift helicopter requirements,” the spokesperson said in an email. With new advanced rotor blades, the configuration was meant to boost a Chinook’s takeoff weight to 48,000 lb. With this model, we are strengthening our cooperation capability in Europe. In addition, we get a larger fleet here and gain flexibility." There is no official letter of agreement yet, according to a Boeing spokesperson.
