And there will be an attempt to break the record for the world’s longest street party. The queen, though, may miss the races to attend a birthday party for her great-granddaughter. - Trooping the Colour: On Thursday morning, 1,400 officers and soldiers, 200 horses and 400 musicians will participate in a parade that has marked the official birthday of the British monarch for more than 260 years. From parades to a pop concert at Buckingham Palace, Britain is commemorating an unprecedented Platinum Jubilee year of the monarchy with a four-day weekend. The queen would traditionally ride with the military parade on horseback but in recent years has shifted to driving alongside in a carriage. The beginning of his 50th year on the throne was marked with church services, feasts, fireworks and souvenirs. But in 1959, she shifted it to the second Saturday. It has been a central feature of the British royal calendar for more than 260 years and sees a huge display of over 1,400 parading soldiers, many clad in iconic red uniforms and black bearskin hats. But her father, King George VI, was born on Dec. 14, and he tended to mark his official birthday on the second Thursday in June. She has anchored the country through uncertainty — and the royal family’s own dramas. In her note, the queen urges that people should look back but also forward. The castle tower and a statue of King Charles II are out of focus in the background.

Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee: Live Updates (The New York Times)

Platinum Jubilee festivities for Britain's longest-serving monarch, 96, are taking place over four days, with parades, street parties and a service in St.

The traditional Derby Stakes, known as the Epsom Derby — one of Britain’s best-known horse races — will be held in the afternoon. Emerging from Tube stations surrounding the park, people held Union Jack flags and lawnchairs as they headed toward the palace for the start of the long weekend of Jubilee festivities. Men and women with military medals polished to a high shine streamed into the parks around Buckingham Palace in the early morning hours before a parade to mark Queen Elizabeth’s official birthday. A new official portrait of the queen was also released to mark the Platinum Jubilee. The photograph was taken at Windsor Castle on May 25, 2022. The queen is expected to take part in a select number of public events during the four day festivities. Despite chilly and rainy weather, the queen and Prince Philip waved to crowds from the deck of the royal barge for hours as it made its way down a seven-mile stretch of the river. Queen Victoria, Queen Elizabeth II’s great-great-grandmother, was also the first British monarch to celebrate 60 years on the throne with her Diamond jubilee. The queen also celebrated her Ruby Jubilee at 40 years of service and Sapphire Jubilee at 65 years, though neither included official national celebrations. Among them was a group of women from the United States, Britain and France who were deep in discussion about the truthfulness of the Netflix series “The Crown” when I met them. “We should see this really exciting boost for tourism — and, frankly, we all need a holiday,” said Allen Simpson, the managing director of London & Partners, the promotional arm for the city. It is not clear how much the queen will take part in the jubilee celebrations, given her frail condition and the problems she has had walking recently. That link has been sacred to her since she served in the auxiliary service as a driver and truck mechanic during World War II, when she was a young princess.

Members of the royal family traditionally make their way down The Mall in open carriages, waving to the gathered crowds before the queen inspects the troops and takes a salute at the parade ground. The grand display of military pageantry will this year include more than 1,200 officers and soldiers as well as hundreds of Army musicians and around 240 horses. Queen Elizabeth II is the world’s third-longest serving monarch in recorded history, and the longest of any British or female sovereign. For just the second time in her 70-year reign, Queen Elizabeth will not take the salute on the ground during the parade, instead receiving a salute from the palace balcony. For Willows, braving the chilly London nights sleeping on a tiny mattress was worth it to celebrate this anniversary. LONDON — Royal superfans have been camped out in tents by Buckingham Palace for days leading up to the festivities. “[The Queen] has given her service every day of the year for 70 years. The pair traveled about 100 miles from Bristol to be there. The queen has kicked off the long jubilee weekend with a message thanking everyone involved in marking the occasion. Some were decked out in Union Jack-themed hats and shirts, while others wore tiaras and even ball gowns to celebrate the queen. It was not clear what was behind the protest. He described her as "the golden thread that binds our two countries."

Queen Elizabeth's Jubilee: What happens next for the monarchy? (Los Angeles Times)

As Britons celebrate Queen Elizabeth II's Platinum Jubilee, questions swirl about her health and the next steps for the world's most famous monarchy.

“Don’t kill off the queen quite yet,” said Dickie Arbiter, 81, the queen’s press former secretary, who is now a prolific commentator on the royal family. “There are a lot of people who will mourn her loss. Besides the United Kingdom — England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland — the British monarch also reigns over Canada, Australia and a dozen other nations that were former colonies, mostly in the Caribbean and the South Pacific. Charles was portrayed as a villain in the press leading up to his divorce from Princess Diana in 1996. Last year, Barbados decided to ditch the queen as its head of state. “The new normal, if you’d like, is that you don’t know if she’s going to turn up,” said Chris Ship, the royal editor of the ITV network and a host of its live coverage. Elizabeth, who was born April 21, 1926, but whose birthday is marked nationally on the second Saturday of June, broke the former record reign for a British monarch — set by her great-great-grandmother Queen Victoria — in 2015. None of these men are as popular as the queen or as known globally.” But her brief presence alongside other members of the royal family served only to underscore how rare and unpredictable such public appearances have become as Elizabeth battles increasing infirmity. He is also 73, nearly three times older than his mother was when she became queen at 25. A trip to the Caribbean in March by Prince William and his wife that was meant to shore up support for the monarchy wound up doing the opposite for many amid photos of the white royal couple shaking hands with Black children in Jamaica through a wire fence. She herself has become increasingly frail and canceled numerous engagements.

Smiling, she chatted with her great-grandson Prince Louis, 4, who occasionally covered his ears as 70 military aircraft old and new swooped low over the palace to salute the queen. The decision also, handily, excluded Prince Andrew, who stepped away from public duties amid controversy over his links with the convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Tens of thousands of locals and tourists lined the route between palace and parade ground to take in the spectacle and the atmosphere. This country does like a good party. Yet after a lifetime of good health, age has begun to catch up with her. The six-minute display included a formation of Typhoon fighter jets flying in the shape of the number 70.
