Apple debuts pay-later service, iPhone updates to developers (Moneyweb.co.za)

Shares were little changed following the announcements, closing at $146.14 on Monday. By Mark Gurman, Bloomberg 7 Jun 2022 09:56.

The iPad is also getting additional collaboration features and a productivity app called Freeform — as well as a weather app for the first time. On the hardware side, Apple unveiled two new Macs, including the biggest refresh of its Air model in more than a decade. The lock screen is also getting widgets — bits of software that show simple information like the weather — for the first time. Those devices account for about 80% of the company’s revenue. The software also will better track sleep to indicate what stage users are experiencing at different times at night. And the Apple Watch is getting less obtrusive notifications that no longer take over the entire screen. The feature, called Apple Pay Later, includes no interest or fees, the company said. And Apple previewed what it called a future without passwords, showing a Passkeys feature that uses cryptography instead of text-based codes. Overall, iOS is getting some highly requested features, such as a joint cloud photo library for families and the ability to unsend or edit iMessages. Apple uses the annual conference in a bid to set itself apart from rivals such as Samsung Electronics Co., Alphabet’s Inc.’s Google and Amazon.com Inc. The roughly two-hour presentation was packed with new features, though there were few bombshells for investors. Apple’s latest iPhone software, iOS 16, will include the new lock screen, letting users personalise elements like their photo and the font used for the time.

iOS 16: Every Major New Feature Apple Revealed at WWDC (CNET)

Apple showed off its upcoming iPhone software at its developer conference Monday. Patrick Holland headshot. Patrick Holland.

One of the more interesting ones is the option to quickly set up a new device for your child. If you start planning a trip with the Maps app on your Mac, you'll be able to share that to your iPhone. With iOS 16 you'll be able to edit messages you already sent in the Messages app, and you get new tools to personalize your iPhone with like the ability to customize the way your lock screen looks and new privacy features for those in abusive relationships. So you could have one lock screen set for when your Work Focus is enabled and another for workouts. Sometimes you get a bunch of notifications in a row from one app, like as the score of a basketball game updates. When you touch a photo's subject like the dog in the image above, you can lift it away from the background and add it to apps like Messages. Essentially it's a tap and hold tool that removes a photo's background. Sometimes notifications can cover up your lock screen's photo, so iOS 16 moves notifications to the bottom of your display. The widgets are akin to complications on the Apple Watch lock screen. Press and hold to edit your lock screen: You can swipe to try out the several different styles. Each style changes the color filter for the background photo and the font on the lock screen so everything compliments each other. So if you notice a typo after a message, you'll be able to edit the message after the fact. Next -- and this might be my favorite new Messages feature -- you can immediately recall a sent message.

5 biggest surprises from Apple's WWDC 2022 event (The Indian Express)

From the debut of the next-generation CarPlay to the ability to use your iPhone as a Mac webcam, these are the most unexpected announcements at Apple's WWDC ...

You will, of course, need to update your iPhone to iOS 16 and Mac to the latest macOS Ventura to turn an iPhone into a webcam. A chunkier, squared-off look, a fanless body, a new 13.6-inch Liquid Retina Display and the second-generation M2 chip makes the new MacBook Air the coolest notebook in town. While we were expecting the iPadOS to get a big update, we weren’t aware that Apple was quietly developing a whiteboard app. The level of customisation features and the way you control your radio, adjust your AC and view car data like fuel level or speed shows how serious Apple is thinking about getting the software right on cars. But there were still a few surprises in store – ranging from the debut of the next-generation CarPlay to the ability to use your iPhone as a webcam on a Mac. Here’s everything we weren’t expecting at WWDC 2022. The best part is you don’t have to connect the iPhone to the Mac; the computer will instantly recognise the unit.

Apple finally lets you see your Wi-Fi network's password in iOS 16 (The Verge)

Wi-Fi password sharing has long been automatic and easy on iOS as long as the person who is trying to connect to your network also has an iPhone, iPad, or Mac.

You need to authenticate with Face ID, Touch ID, or a passcode to see a stored password, and then you get an option to copy it. Even though your phone is connected to the network, you still have to search around for the Wi-Fi password at the back of the router or on that old crusty piece of paper where you shouldn’t be storing passwords anyway. Apple is finally adding the ability to see your stored Wi-Fi password in iOS 16.

Apple unveils new MacBooks, iOS 16 features and more (Independent Online)

A pair of new MacBooks, the ability to unsend a poorly thought out message, a busier lock screen and the option to buy now and pay later are just some of ...

Throw in some fiddly power user settings that PC and Mac users tend to take for granted, like the ability to see how big a folder is in the Files app, and it may soon be a little easier to go all in on a tablet. Apple said it would make its Fitness app available to all iPhone owners, and that the software would be able to track your number of steps taken, flights of stairs climbed and workouts tackled, with no wearable required. And in certain cases, that means Apple software could also replace what you would normally see on the instrument clusters in a car, in other words, the dials behind the steering wheel. With help from the new Stage Manager feature also coming to Macs, iPads will be able to run multiple apps in resizable windows, which can even overlap with each other. Apple says its watch will be able to determine how much sleep people spend in different stages, though researchers have told The Washington Post that these kinds of insights often are not much more than guesses. The feature is also an acknowledgment that the iPhone camera is significantly better than those in Macs and might continue to be so into the future. Perhaps unsurprisingly for a company that has already ventured into financial services, Apple is getting in on the "buy now and pay later" craze. After fielding criticism for the ways its AirTags and "Find My" location network could put victims of stalking or domestic abuse in danger, Apple unveiled a new "Safety Check" settings section. It is worth noting that revoking access to location and messages could in itself present a safety risk if a person was being held against their will. Its built-in battery is said to last two hours longer than the one found in the new MacBook Air and supports up to 24 gigabytes of RAM, not that most people will ever really need that much. Notifications from apps will also now roll in from the bottom of the screen, so they will not cover up the photo and font you picked out for your new custom lock screen. The biggest news was two updated MacBooks with new chips, Mac and Apple Watch software changes, and not a hint about the company's virtual reality ambitions.

We hope that Apple will have launched M-series chips in all its Macs, but if it hasn’t by this point you can be sure to see them at this autumn event. Maybe in 2022, we will see the Apple Watch redesign that was rumored for 2021, but never appeared. Apple clearly likes to hold September events. So far in 2022 Apple has held two events. The most interesting thing is that I don't think Apple is disrupting this market just for the money. It just works using their standard Apple Pay implementation." Second, customers can use Apple Pay Later anywhere that already accepts Apple Pay online or in-app. Apple Pay Later provides users in the US with a seamless and secure way to split the cost of an Apple Pay purchase into four equal payments spread over six weeks, with zero interest and no fees of any kind. First, the company is taking on less risk since it already has your payment information on file, and only extends the payments over six weeks. Besides, Apple already lets customers pay over time when they use an Apple Card to buy things like iPhones and Macs. Probably the biggest challenge facing BNPL services is the tedious work of setting up partnerships with every business that sells online. Apple doesn't have that problem. Klarna, which owns about a third of the market, just announced it's laying off 700 employees. In 2020, Apple Pay accounted for about 5 percent of all credit card transactions. Apple has gone all-in on trying to be the primary way people process payments. You're supposed to just use it with Apple Pay.

Apple unveils its car at WWDC – sort of (RCR Wireless News)

Apple took the wraps off new Macs, a new CarPlay and more at its annual Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) this week.

WWDC gave Apple an opportunity to reveal new versions of the operating systems for its watch, iPad and Mac coming this fall. Apple will begin selling the new laptops starting in July at the same price as existing models and has discounted the existing 13-inch MacBook Pro to make room for the new models. Apple touted iCloud Shared Photo library at WWDC as a convenient new way for families and friends to share memories. Apple’s emphasizing new productivity features like Stage Manager to better manage the clutter of many open apps. Apple received fierce criticism earlier this year for the webcam in its premium-priced $1,599 27-inch Studio Display, which users said produced very low-quality images. Apple, a long-time Arm licensee, developed its own custom silicon to power the iPhone and the iPad. But for years, Apple’s Mac computers continued to use microprocessors made by Intel and a succession of Intel and third-party graphics processing units (GPUs) from Nvidia and rival AMD. Apple said 98% of new car models sold in the U.S. support CarPlay — in its current implementation. Which ostensibly gives CarPlay app makers a year or so to get things with the new tech right, before people start messing around with their custom dash designs. Apple Inc. kicked off its annual Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) on Monday with an ambitious vision of CarPlay’s future, and promised buy-in from automakers, though it’ll take a while before new features actually make it to cars. As with other tech giants, Apple uses its developer event to frame both public and developer expectations. But Apple’s new CarPlay implementation is certainly a much more ambitious and complete reach than Android Auto. Apple introduced a lot of new technology this week, but it’s probably worth noting what Apple didn’t introduce: Any new Augmented Reality (AR) headset or VR device.

But I want Apple to allow me more control over my child’s devices, especially when they are a little older and want to explore more of the internet. Privacy advocates will tell me “You should trust your child.” I do trust them, and I constantly discuss with them why I have controls set up and what they should be watching out for when they’re online. Apple’s biggest selling point for parents is how integrated it is — and Family Sharing means you don’t have to buy the same apps or subscriptions multiple times. It would be nice if this were a toggle you keep turned on for your children’s devices, as seeing exactly what your tween has been taking pictures of is a feature some parents might appreciate. It was announced at Apple’s WWDC conference this week, along with a few other upgrades to Family Sharing, Apple’s slightly confusing and very convoluted umbrella term under which Screen Time sits. With the request sitting handily in my Messages app with a dropdown menu that presumably will give me the same four options — approve for 15 minutes; an hour; all day; or, my favorite, don’t approve — I can handle the demand on my time rather than hers.

Apple is turning your iPhone into fintech service taking on PayPal ... (CNBC)

The new Wallet features are designed to attract more people to Apple Pay and keep customers locked into the iOS ecosystem.

And because of Apple's scale with more than a billion devices in use, a lot more people are about to be exposed to these products. But things are moving slowly in some areas, such as last year's feature that lets you add your driver's license, which is available in just a couple of states in the U.S., and with a few more expected soon. It could be a tough time for Apple to launch a new product designed to get people to buy more stuff if those trends persist throughout the year. Apple's new rivals in the buy now, pay later space have struggled in recent months as consumer spending shifts from goods to services. Many of these features aren't designed to make money for Apple directly, but they do make Apple Pay more attractive for people who haven't tried it yet. But Apple's new Wallet features are also coming at a time of great economic uncertainty.

Here are the biggest changes coming to your iPhone in Apple's new ... (CNBC)

Apple's iOS 16 offers the biggest change to the look of the iPhone's lock screen since 2014 and includes improvements to apps like Messages, Mail, and Maps.

The iPhone has an excellent, photo-quality camera that can record in 4K or 8K. Wouldn't it be better to dial into a Zoom call with that instead of the lower-quality camera on your laptop? Safety Check. A new feature called Safety Check enables users to quickly turn off all services and apps being shared with the user's family, such as location. Building on last year's Focus mode, Apple now enables users to have entirely different wallpapers or app setups for different times of day, like when the user is at work or asleep. Apple Maps is getting an update that will allow you to add different stops to a route. Plus, Apple Watch owners will be to monitor their sleep and heartbeat in the iPhone health app. Users will be able to add smaller widgets with real-time data like the weather forecast on the lock screen, and even change the font of the clock for the first time. Apple Wallet in iOS 16 will also make it easier to share digital car or home keys through messaging. Apple is also adding artificial intelligence features that can translate text in photos or videos that the user takes. But now the app is using artificial intelligence to automatically share photos with up to six people based on who's in the photo — such as kids or family members. Apple Maps can add multiple stops to a route. The other user won't get a notification but will see that the message has been edited or recalled. So, if you want these features and still have that phone, it may be time to upgrade this fall.

Apple says its watch will be able to determine how much sleep people spend in different stages, though researchers have told The Washington Post that these kinds of insights often are not much more than guesses. Perhaps unsurprisingly for a company that has already ventured into financial services, Apple is getting in on the ‘buy now and pay later’ craze. Its built-in battery is said to last two hours longer than the one found in the new MacBook Air, and supports up to 24 gigabytes of RAM, not that most people will ever really need that much. Notifications from apps will also now roll in from the bottom of the screen, so they will not cover up the photo and font you picked out for your new custom lock screen. Instead of just showing a photo and the time, the new iOS 16 software will let you add widgets, or at-a-glance information, from apps including calendar, weather, and even real-time events like sports games. Leaning into the thin design ethos, the new MacBook Air drops the classic wedge design for a more consistently flat profile that weighs 1.2kg and is 1.27cm thick. The biggest news was two updated MacBooks with new chips, and Mac and Apple Watch software changes - but not a word about the company's virtual reality ambitions.

Explained: How does Apple Watch's activity tracking work (Times of India)

Don't you think Apple Watch is more capable of doing what most smartwatches can not even do properly? A lot more than counting steps and keeping track.

With the WatchOS 9, Apple announced the MultiSport workout type; when enabled, the Apple Watch can automatically switch between swimming, running and biking. So, the Apple Watch is a smartwatch which means it has a brain of its own – a processor, and there are a bunch of different sensors on the watch and a display where you can see different stats. The Sleep tracking on the Apple Watch is quite simple. Those exercise rings on your Watch fill up as you keep working out. A lot of the tracking is based on the personal information you have filled in while setting up the watch. The exercise ring on your Apple Watch has a lot going behind the curtain.

TechScape: Do Apple's bigger car screens take driving in the right ... (The Guardian)

In this week's newsletter: Apple's CarPlay updates put a dizzying amount of information at a driver's fingertips – for good or bad.

And it’s important to not let the perfect be the enemy of the good: a world without these screens is unlikely to be a world full of great, law-abiding drivers, but rather just a world where more people than ever are comfortable holding their phone in one hand as they drive with the other. But my priority for an in-car display is providing a driver with the information they need to get from A to B without endangering me, other road users, other drivers and themselves. But the more tasks that are shifted from buttons and dials to a touchscreen device, the less a driver is able to do while devoting their attention to the road ahead. The company showed off a new lock screen for the iPhone, that lets users customise far more than just the wallpaper, from the font used for the clock to the placement and location of widgets on the lock screen itself. “With larger-size screens and more of them throughout the car, there is an opportunity for iPhone to play an even more important role. In previous years, that has included a strong focus on augmented reality technology, encouraging developers to adopt the company’s tools for building AR experiences.

Apple WWDC announcements hot take (GSMArena.com)

The MacBook Air stole the show, iPadOS gets MacOS feature, and the and iOS 16 sees minor updates.

Basically, Lock Screens are now customizable – and you can make many of them - with widgets inspired by Apple Watch Complications, which is a great way to tie it into iOS. The 13-inch MacBook Pro that launched in 2020 is now outfitted with the M2 chip, but that’s the only update it gets. We are still wondering why the 13-inch MacBook Pro even exists when the new Air just became a far more compelling option.13-inch MacBook Pro keeps Touch Bar and previous-gen Retina WWDC wrapped with minor updates to MacOS, iOS, watchOS 9 gets some new watch faces and Health features, while iPadOS and iOS get some new UI improvements. It isn’t even a true “Pro” without the SD card and extra ports from the larger models. Apple has moved on from the Touch Bar, but this laptop has not. This new 13-inch MacBook Air with M2 is a very strong entry-level offering for Apple’s notebook lineup. The beloved wedge design is gone and replaced with a flat unibody look. The MacBook Air gets refreshed hardware, and it looks spectacular, so let's start with that. The M2 sees beefed up CPU and graphics performance on the next-generation 5nm tech. The CPU improvement is about 18%, while graphics are 35% more powerful graphics, and neither is likely to make someone with an M1-powered laptop to make the upgrade. The week kicked off with Apple’s WWDC event that brought both software and hardware-related updates.

Apple M2 vs Apple M1 Ultra: Is newer better? (TrustedReviews)

Apple finally officially announced the M2 chipset at WWDC 2022, but how does it compare to the high-end M1 chipset?

It is also around three times as powerful as the vanilla M1 chip. The M1 Ultra chip can be found in the Mac Studio, which is a workstation PC that has a similar design to the Mac Mini. This high transistor count explains how the Ultra chip can manage 20 CPU cores and 64 GPU cores, which is the highest core count out of all the M-Series processors. The M2 is the newest out of the M-lineup, being announced during WWDC 2022. The Ultra was made by connecting two M1 Max die together using UltraFusion packaging architecture, which allows it to pack so many transistors and cores. But which is the best chip option for you?

Hamilton to co-produce Apple's new F1 film - The Race (The Race)

Seven-time Formula 1 champion Lewis Hamilton will co-produce an 'F1 racing feature', starring Brad Pitt, for Apple's film arm.

What might be most relevant to the current project is that Pitt already has an undeniable sports movie success under his belt. The 2012 baseball-themed vehicle Moneyball, which Pitt starred and which his Plan B company co-produced, was a critical darling and a Best Picture nominee – while being repeatedly praised as a film that could be enjoyed by non-fans of the sport. The movie is to be headlined by Brad Pitt, who Apple – in announcing its acquisition of the project – says will “star as a driver who comes out of retirement to compete alongside a rookie driver against the titans of the sport”.

Apple is coming for Garmin but it has a battery problem (The Verge)

At WWDC 2022, Apple introduced new running metrics and triathlete support in watchOS 9. It appears that Apple is looking to draw in athletes who usually go ...

In comparison, you get roughly 5-6 hours of GPS activity on the Apple Watch. That’s more than enough for the average person, but it still requires endurance athletes to do a little math or specifically remember to charge up their watch before a run. “Longtime, experienced runners who use watches tend to understand metrics like pace pretty well,” says Caprara. “Casual runners, on the other hand, don’t have that readily available to them. There is incredible value in taking this data and using it to ensure that everyone has a coach on their side encouraging them to take the next step.” For instance, the Apple Heart Study using the Apple Watch had an unprecedented 400,000 participants. But the Garmin and Polar fans love getting a minimum of 14 days on a single charge and somewhere between 30-40 hours of GPS activity. If there’s even a remote risk, the value is diminished.” Generally, dedicated athletes have to make a choice between the two categories — you want a multifunction smartwatch for everyday use or a more specific tool for tracking exercise and workouts? On top of that, longer battery is more convenient than scheduled fast charging if you prioritize sleep tracking. However, they still have the edge when it comes to one major feature: battery life. The second category is essentially fitness trackers in a smartwatch shell — and within that category, there are multisport GPS watches. As a runner and wearables reviewer, the presentation immediately made me think, “Holy guacamole, Apple is coming for Garmin.” The Apple watch obviously falls into this category.
