Brave Bafana Bafana go down fighting in close Afcon qualifier ... (Independent Online)

Having taken an early lead in the first half, Bafana Bafana conceded two second half goals as they went down to Morocco in their Africa Cup of Nations ...

But just as he did against France, Williams was Bafana’s the knight in shining armour. The momentum of the game may have dipped in the second half, but that allowed Bafana to see more of the ball, although they were not convincing in their pressing as they failed to threaten the Atlas Lions defence. The Atlas Lions were denied a clear penalty early in the second half after the ball struck the arm of Felies. But they’d soon make up for that as En-Nesyri equalised to send the venue into a frenzy.

Did Sithole vindicate Bafana Bafana boss Broos? | Goal.com (Goal.com)

Perhaps next to Sithole. However, with the inexperienced Goodman Mosele overrun at times on the night and with Bafana Bafana having to weather a massive storm of pressure from the hosts, it could still be argued that Jali’s experience, battle-hardened approach and leadership qualities would have been of high value. And while his team Belenenses were relegated at the end of last season, Thursday's performance in North Africa would likely have helped put him in the shop window for a move to one of the top leagues in Europe.

Bafana player ratings: Catlike Ronwen rock solid, but lax midfield ... (News24)

Bafana Bafana captain and goalkeeper Ronwen Williams was the standout player in their Afcon defeat to Morocco.

Despite his form for Orlando Pirates in the tail-end of the 2021/22 season, the forward was missing for most of the match. The star man of the national team and so much rests on his shoulders. Mosele was careless on the ball and did not have enough grunt and urgency in his passing and defensive abilities. However, this time, Phete was in the middle of a tricky three-way partnership that was never tried or tested. He led the team with vigour and made world-class saves in front of a hostile crowd. It was reminiscent of his performance against France in March, where he was at his best despite a 5-0 defeat.

He was substituted while looking tired in the 62nd minute. Tau looked to create chances for his teammates and he never stopped running. However, he played much better following the introduction of Phathutshedze Nange and Yusuf Maart. Sithole then struggled in his midfield battle against Sofyane Ambarat who made him chase shadows. Lakay was tormented by Achraf Hakimi on the night and he never got a chance to push forward. Williams kept the Atlas Lions at bay in the first half with a series of wonderful saves.
