Analyst highlights ample continued opportunities for South African coal (Creamer Media's Mining Weekly)

Now is the time to help junior coal mining companies expand or help bring newcomers on board, amid high coal prices and solid existing and incoming demand, ...

“If we make coal more amenable to be used, with lower emissions, that is the future of the energy industry. “There is not another source of energy more dependable, abundant and cheap that can replace coal. Russia was at risk of having no demand for its 225-billion tons reserve of coal, as President Vladimir Putin has rendered Russia’s economy ‘cancelled’, Prévost noted. Another promising opportunity is that of India’s State-owned Coal India issuing tenders for coal procurement. For example, coal remains the fuel of choice for South East Asia. The region expects to increase coal’s share in power generation from 32% in 2014 to 40% in 2040, while coal remains king in countries such as India and Germany. Prévost advocates for continued use of coal currently and in the future, deeming it critical to the world as it provides affordable, much-needed electricity, as well as builds societies through its use in steel and cement.

While some remain sceptical, many more participants believe that South Africa has the resources and the expertise to find a pathway to reform that will achieve equitable access to healthcare. While there are some areas of agreement, the research also laid bare the many conflicts that exist within the debates on health system reform. Furthermore, participants acknowledged the urgent need for the reform of regulations for the private sector, including private health insurance, hospitals and pricing. A critical finding of the report is that all stakeholders believe the foundation of a health system is the right of all people living in South Africa to access quality healthcare services. The debate on health reform in South Africa has been ongoing for more than a decade, with the government pursuing National Health Insurance (NHI) as a remedy for the increasing inequities within the health system. The need for health reform in South Africa has never been more pressing.

“Over and above the benefit of reliability to supply, investment in alternative energy also now yields very favourable payback periods,” de Kock says. More than that, though - it is a one-stop platform where companies can grow, protect and run their business supported by Nedbank’s best-in-class financial services,” says de Kock. A Nedbank study in partnership with Trace and Save and the WWF in the pasture grazed dairy farming sector, for example, proved that investment in sustainability had a direct positive impact on the profitability of the farming operations “We have reached, and will continue to do so, the point where incorporating sustainable development goals (SDGs) in any business’s strategy formulation process is not a nice to have, but an imperative.” By tapping into business growth trends that also focus on more than increasing bottom lines, businesses can look to the future, too. The RAF was not present, even though the judge stood the matter down to arrange for a representative to be contacted to attend. “The RAF pleads for a revolving door … where it simply disregards its obligations to attend court to have issues determined after hearing evidence,” he said. He said it seemed the RAF’s executives believed their views and processes to be above the law. She said that her injury had significantly and permanently compromised the quality of her life. The “short-term consequence” was that the Fund had no representation in disputed court matters.
