Nandy sides with both public and workers as rail strikes loom (The Guardian)

Shadow levelling up secretary says Labour wants to avoid industrial action as RMT plans June walkouts. Lisa Nandy with Keir Starmer in background.

Speaking on ITV’s Good Morning Britain, Nandy said: “We want to avoid the strikes and we’re on the public’s side on this. “The way that you create good public services is not to attack the people who run those services, is not to attack those people who work day in, day out in order to try and keep them going – the way you do it is to support them.” Network Rail is drawing up contingency plans to enable some mainline services to run.

MP backs FCA strike action (FT Adviser)

Shadow chancellor and MP Rachel Reeves alongside other Labour party members has supported the strike action by staff at the Financial Conduct Authority.

“With this in mind, I fully support your efforts to win recognition and with it ensure that workplace issues are constructively addressed,” she added. Attracting and retaining people is also an important part of any organisation’s success, which is one reason why so many financial institutions have a trade union recognition agreement.” It urged the FCA to sit down with Unite workplace representatives and ensure the issues facing the employees are fairly resolved.

A third union has warned it could join the "summer of discontent" if demands about pay and conditions are not met. The majority of the strike action will take place over a nine-day period at the end of June. "The way that you create good public services is not to attack the people who run those services, is not to attack those people who work day in, day out in order to try and keep them going - the way you do it is to support them." The majority of the strike action is scheduled to take place over a nine-day period at the end of June. Speaking in Blackpool today the prime minister said the "time has come" to close inefficient train ticket offices across the UK and replace them with automated systems as part of cutting the costs of transport. The attacks are so vicious that “hundreds” of workers have left the FCA since bosses announced the measures. Who are the people who fail it? Steve O’Donnell, Unite regional officer, told Socialist Worker, “The mood is positive, in favour of the action. Workers are also demanding that Unite is officially recognised within the workplace. “Some people simply left,” said Hugh. “Management wasn’t expecting that.” And hundreds more at the FCA have thrown themselves into organising within the union. “So 10-12 percent of people’s pay was a bonus—but that’s not quite right, it’s just part of their pay,” he said.

They too are demanding more pay, having been hit by the cost of living crisis. More than 50,000 workers across Network Rail and 13 out of 15 train operators will go on strike over pay and potential job cuts. This comes following a 24-hour strike on Monday 6 June, which saw 4,000 workers strike. A reduced timetable is expected to cover the entire week, with just 20 per cent of services running on strike days. The strike ballot is open to GMB and Unite union members from 7 to 23 June, and will give workers the opportunity to decide whether to strike over the summer months. Council workers in Scotland are balloting 25,000 staff for a strike over pay that threatens to shut schools and nurseries. Members of the Communication Workers Union (CWU) at Crown Post Offices will launch a strike over pay on Saturday, while members working in administration and supply chain networks walked out on Monday. This is the second time the workers have engaged in industrial action and the union has not ruled out further walkouts. Employees began the strike earlier this week and Unite union said it is expected to go on for “an undisclosed period of time”. The union warned that a yes vote could mandate a strike in the run-up to the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, due to take place from 28 July to 8 August. “All those affected by our proposed strike action should direct their anger and frustration at the government and the rail industry for failing to give railway workers a decent pay rise and proposing to cut thousands of jobs on the network.” Post Office workers will walk out this Saturday, BT staff will be balloted next week, and bin workers across the country are also threatening to go on strike.

Rail managers could join strikes across network in Britain (The Guardian)

TSSA union ballots could lead to complete national shutdown by time of Commonwealth Games in July.

No trains are expected to run north of Edinburgh and Glasgow in Scotland, nor beyond the Cardiff region in Wales, on strike days. We’re also on the rail workers’ side. The railway is expecting to run about 20% of normal services between 7am and 7pm, preserving some trains on mainlines and urban services. The shadow levelling up secretary, Lisa Nandy, gave qualified backing to rail workers on Thursday, but said Labour wanted to avoid strikes. The train companies are doing very well out of Britain’s railways – with handsome profits, dividends for shareholders, and big salaries for managers – and we are not going to work longer, for less.” Rail staff at Avanti West Coast, which operates intercity services between London, Birmingham, Manchester and Glasgow, are to be balloted for a strike, the TSSA union has announced.
